Twenty-four SSC Baseball Athletes Earn 2019 South Region Awards
Torrealba and McCollough named Player, Pitcher of the Year by NCBWA, D2CCA, and ABCA
MELBOURNE, Fla. [Updated: 5.29.19] - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), NCAA Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA), and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) have announced their 2019 All-Region baseball award winners. Twenty-four ballplayers from the SSC are honored, with 10 earning accolades from all three organizations.
Yorvis Torrealba from the University of Tampa is named the 2019 NCBWA, D2CCA, and ABCA Player of the Year. The SSC Player of the Year ranks at the top of the SSC in batting average (.417), slugging percentage (.697) and runs scored (55). The Parkland, Florida product is also Top-5 in hits (73), stolen bases (19), on-base percentage (.502), doubles (14), and home runs (11).
Dillon McCollough earns Pitcher of the Year from NCBWA, D2CCA, and ABCA following an 8-1 regular season on the hill for Eckerd. In 108.0 innings pitched, he struck out 137 batters and registered a WHIP of 0.99. The senior from Deltona, Florida recorded a 2.08 earned run average and .223 batting average against across his 15 appearances in 2019.
Along with Torrealba and McCollough, Keven Pimentel (Tampa) and Tyler Beck (Tampa) received First Team accolades from all three organizations. Alejandro Martinez (Lynn University), Kirk Sidwell (Embry-Riddel Aeronautical University), and Ducan Pastore (Nova Southeastern University) also received First Team honors from D2CCA. Zach Howard (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University) and Chris Cabrera (Barry University) earn First Team nods from the NCWBA.
Eckerd and Tampa boast the most regional accolades in the conference with four each, while Embry-Riddle and Nova Southeastern both have three winners. Nine of the SSC's 11 baseball programs are represented in this year's awards.
