SSC Athletes of the Week | April 1 - 7, 2019

Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of April 1 -7, 2019. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.


Baseball Player of the Week

10292Kyle Guttveg / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University  / Jr. / OF / Palm City, Florida
Guttveg earns Player of the Week honors after leading Embry-Riddle offensively to a road series sweep of No. 2 University of Tampa. The junior leadoff hitter went 7-for-13 at the plate for the Eagles with two extra-base hits, three runs scored, and two stolen bases. Guttveg recorded at least two hits in each game of the series and extended his consecutive on-base streak to 27 games. The Palm City, Florida native slashed .538/.538/.692 during the series sweep that took Embry-Riddle to the top of the conference standings.


Baseball Pitcher of the Week

10288Dominic Jeancola / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University / Sr. / Debary, Florida
Jeancola claims Pitcher of the Week for his two relief appearances in a road series sweep against No. 2 University of Tampa. The senior recorded two multi-inning saves for the Eagles, tossing one and two-thirds innings in each appearance. He allowed two hits while striking out three batters and allowing no runs to earn his sixth and seventh saves of the season. The Debary, Florida product lowered his earned run average to 1.59 on the season, and the closer is holding opposing batters to a .188 average.

 
Softball Player of the Week

10293Jaden Kline / Florida Tech / Jr. / C / Kissimmee, Florida
Kline is awarded Player of the Week following her performance in Florida Tech’s series win at No. 24 Rollins College. The junior went 5-for-12 at the plate with five runs batted in and two extra-base hits across the three game set. Her top game was the first of the series where she went 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI’s. For the week, the Kissimmee, Florida native slashed .417/.417/.583 and had nine putouts defensively from behind the plate.



Softball Pitcher of the Week

10291Makaleigh Dooley / University of Tampa / Sr. / Tampa, Florida
Dooley captured her fourth Pitcher of the week honors of the season after her performances in a series sweep against Barry University. The senior started all three games in the circle for the Spartans and recorded three complete-game victories. The Tampa native threw 23 innings over her three starts allowing a run, a walk, and nine hits while striking out 27 batters. In the final game of the series, Dooley pitched all 11 innings where she gave up her one run on three hits and struck out 10 batters. The Tampa senior has now won Pitcher of the Week 11 times in her career, which ties her for the second most SSC softball weekly awards all-time.
 
Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
 
10283Ryan Dunn / Rollins College / Jr. / Attack / Ridgefield, Connecticut
Dunn secures Offensive Player of the Week honors for his performance in Rollins’ wins over No. 14 Saint Leo University (11-10) and Florida Southern College (20-11). Against the Lions, Dunn tallied three points from three goals and scooped up three ground balls. Facing the Moccasins, the Ridgefield, Connecticut product had four goals, two assists, and three ground balls. For the week, the junior attacker totaled nine points, six ground balls, and caused a turnover. Dunn is second in the league in goals per game (3.08) and fifth in points per game (4.08).
 
 
Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

10284Evan Schimek / Rollins College / Sr. / Defense / Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Schimek was selected Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in Rollins’ wins over No. 14 Saint Leo University (11-10) and Florida Southern College (20-11). The Fort Lauderdale, Florida native caused six turnovers and picked up eight ground balls across the two conference games. Schimek’s 2.50 caused turnovers per game ranks second in the SSC. Schimek and the Rollins defense went 36-41 on clears and allowed three man-down goals across the two games.


Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week

10055Ross Dickerson / University of Tampa / Jr. / FO / Berlin, Maryland
Dickerson takes Specialist of the Week for his work at the faceoff X during Tampa’s wins over Florida Southern College (17-11) and No. 14 Saint Leo University (17-8). Against the Mocassins, Dickerson won 24-of-30 faceoffs while picking up 13 ground balls. Facing the Lions, he won 18-of-21 faceoffs and picked up 17 ground balls. For the week, the Berlin, Maryland native won 82.4% of faceoffs and tallied two points off a goal and an assist. Dickerson is second in the SSC in ground balls per game (11.21) and in faceoff percentage (0.766). This is Dickerson’s fifth weekly award this season and eighth all-time, tying him for second in career men's lacrosse weekly awards.
 

Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

10281Riley Bannatyne / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Attack / Maitland, Florida
Bannatyne is awarded Offensive Player of the Week after leading Florida Southern’s offense in wins over No. 2  Rollins College (16-11) and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (21-10). Bannatyne opened the week registering five goals off five shots against the Tars. She then scored four goals on five shots against the Eagles. For the week, the Maitland, Florida native totaled nine points, a ground ball, and a caused turnover.
 


Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

10290Sam Keesey / Florida Southern College / Sr. / Defense / Bel Air, Maryland
Keesey claims Defensive Player of the Week honors for her defensive efforts during Florida Southern’s wins over No. 2 Rollins College (16-11) and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (21-10). For the week, the Bel Air, Maryland product caused eight turnovers, picked up six ground balls, and won 13 draw controls. Keesey and the rest of the Mocassins converted 43-of-48 clears and had 51 ground balls. Keesey currently leads the SSC in caused turnovers (33) and caused turnovers per game (2.54).
 

Men's Golfer of the Week

10282Davide Longhini / Saint Leo University / Fr. / Asiago, Italy
Longhini secures Golfer of the Week honors for the first time in his career after his 18th place finish at the University of West Florida’s Argonaut Cup. The freshman carded rounds of 74, 73, & 72 to finish the tournament at three-over-par. The Italian recorded eight birdies over the three rounds to lead the No. 12 Saint Leo team to an 11th place team finish.  




Women's Golfer of the Week

10289Amanda Gartrell / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Lakeland, Florida
Gartrell earns Golfer of the Week accolades after claiming her first career collegiate win at the the University of West Florida’s Argonaut Invitational. The junior shots rounds of 72, 74, & 72 to finish at two-over-par and two shots better than second place. The Lakeland, Florida native overcame a two-shot deficit going into the final round where she recorded four of her tournament high 11 birdies. Gartrell’s win led the Moccasins to a 3rd place team finish in the event.  

 

Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

10280Nicolo De Fraia / Rollins College / Sr. / Cagliari, Italy
De Fraia claims Tennis Athlete of the Week after going 1-1 on the week against the No. 10 University of West Florida. The senior fell at the #2 doubles position with partner Frederick Danielson, 6-3. The highlight of the match for the Tars was De Fraia’s upset victory over the No. 5 Serdar Bojadjiev at the #1 singles position 6-4, 6-0. With the victory, De Fraia improves to 16-0 on the season in singles play.



Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

10168Leolia Jeanjean / Lynn University / Sr. / Montpellier, France
Jeanjean takes Tennis Athlete of the Week for the fourth time this season following her performance in Lynn’s 7-0 win over No. 5 Nova Southeastern University. Jeanjean and doubles partner Ulyana Grib started off the match with a 6-2 win at #1 doubles. In singles play, No. 25 Jeanjean upset another highly-ranked opponent, downing No. 8 Natalie Espinal in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. On Friday, Lynn had its match with No. 22 University of West Florida halted and canceled due to rain, but not before Jeanjean and Grib could pick up a 6-3 win at the top doubles flight. Jeanjean is 15-0 on the year in singles and 18-0 in doubles play.
 
Women's Rowing Boat of the Week

10285Varsity Eight / Florida Tech / Melbourne, Florida
Florida Tech takes Boat of the Week honors following their first place finish in the Varsity 8 heat at the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association (FIRA) Championships in Sarasota, Florida. The Varsity Eight boat won the race in 6:46.00, finishing 5.25 seconds ahead of second place the University of Florida, and 8.84 seconds ahead of the next SSC team, Barry University. The boat was crewed by Graysen Pensch (bow), Liza Lutter, Irina Djurovic, Anna Kayser Gallego, Theresa Gadilhe, Svetlana Ristin, Federica Pala, Natalia Arasa Bonavila and Taylor Stoni (coxswain). The Panthers finished the regatta second in the women’s division.
