SSC Athletes of the Week | April 15 - 21, 2019

Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of April 15 - 21, 2019. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.


Baseball Player of the Week

10461Danny Sirven / University of Tampa  / Sr. / C / Miami, Florida
Sirven earns Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career after leading Tampa offensively to a three-game series sweep of the No. 13  University of North Georgia. The senior catcher went 6-for-14 at the plate while recording a home run in every game of the series. The Miami native’s top game came in an 11-inning, 11-9 victory where he went 2-for-4 with two walks, a home run, two runs scored, and four RBI’s. For the week, Sirven slashed .429/.500/1.071 with five runs and six runs batted in.


Baseball Pitcher of the Week

10454Dillon McCollough / Eckerd College / Sr. / Deltona, Florida
McCollough captures his fourth career Pitcher of the Week award for his effort on the hill in a 10-0 victory over Nova Southeastern University. The senior started the first game of the three-game set and delivered the Tritons a complete game shutout over the Sharks, scattering seven hits and striking out eight batters. The Deltona, Florida native threw 124 pitches in his second complete game of the season and improves his record to 8-0. Following the performance, McCollough lowered his ERA to 1.57 and leads the SSC in strikeouts with 113 on the season.

 
Softball Player of the Week

10457Nikole Van Gennep / Eckerd College / Sr. / P / Mokena, Illinois
Van Gennep is awarded Player of the Week for the third time in her career for her performance in Eckerd’s three-game sweep against Barry University. The senior went 8-for-13 at the plate, scored six runs, and knocked in ten more runs in the series. Van Gennep also earned victories in the circle, pitching complete games in the first and third games of the series. Her top performance of the week came in game one where she went 4-for-5 at the plate with a home run, five RBI’s, and two runs scored while also tossing seven innings and earning the win. The Mokena, Illinois product slashed .615/.615/1.154 for the series while hitting her SSC leading 11th and 12th home runs of the season.  


Softball Pitcher of the Week

10291Makaleigh Dooley / University of Tampa / Sr. / Tampa, Florida
For the 12th time in her career, Dooley receives SSC Pitcher of the Week honors. The mark ties her for the most by any softball player in conference history. Over a three-game series against Palm Beach Atlantic University, Dooley captured two wins in the circle and tossed three complete games. The senior struck out 27 batters over the 21 innings pitched, surrendering 17 hits and two earned runs. The Tampa native’s top performance of the week came in a three-hit shutout of the Sailfish in which she struck out 10 batters.. For the week, she produced a 0.86 earned run average, 0.809 WHIP, and .212 opponent batting averaged. In addition to Dooley's softball weekly accolades, she joins a seven-way tie for the sixth most Player of the Week awards in league history.
 
Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
 
10171Andrew Kew / University of Tampa / Sr. / Attack / Oakville, Ontario
Kew earns Offensive Player of the Week honors for his scoring prowess during Tampa’s 21-10 win over Palm Beach Atlantic University. Now with 248 career goals, The Oakville, Ontario native becomes the NCAA Division-II leader in career goals. This week against the Sailfish, the senior attacker had seven points from five goals and two assists, while picking up three ground balls.  He finishes the season leading the league in goals per game (3.33) and points per game (5.40). This honor places Kew third all-time in SSC weekly men's lacrosse awards.
 
Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

10451Greg Morissette / Lynn University / Sr. / Defense / Woodstock, Ontario
Morissette was selected Defensive Player of the Week for his defensive abilities during Lynn’s 11-10 overtime victory over Saint Leo University. The Woodstock, Ontario product caused three turnovers and scooped six ground balls in the victory. He also added a transition goal to his stat sheet. The senior defender helped Lynn to 16-of-17 in clearing and held the Lions to one man-up goal on two attempts. With the win, the Fighting Knights claimed the SSC regular season championship.

Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week

10325Dryden Brous / Lynn University / Jr. / FO / Ocean City, Maryland
Brous takes Specialist of the Week for his work at the dot during Lynn’s 11-10 overtime win over Saint Leo University. The junior faceoff specialist picked up ten ground balls and won 19-of-23 faceoffs, including the opening faceoff in overtime that led to the Fighting Knights victory. With the win, the Fighting Knights claimed the SSC regular season championship. Brous is second in the SSC in faceoff percentage (0.737). This weekly award keeps Brous second all-time in the category within men’s lacrosse.
 

Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

10313Kallie German / Rollins College / Sr. / Attack / Centreville, Maryland  
German repeats as Offensive Player of the Week after leading Rollins’ offense in a 17-6 win over Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The Centreville, Maryland native registered 10 points from four goals and six assists and caused one turnover. During the game, German became the program’s all-time leader in goals scored with 196. With the conclusion of the regular season, German leads the SSC in points per game (5.87), is second in assists per game (2.67), and is third in goals per game (3.20).


Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

10252Bridget Sutter / University of Tampa / So. / Goalie / Evergreen, Colorado  
Sutter claims Defensive Player of the Week for her goaltending performance during Tampa’s wins over Saint Leo University (19-13) and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (20-8). For the week, the Evergreen, Colorado product had 18 saves, allowed 21 goals, picked up 13 ground balls, and caused one turnover. The sophomore goalie led the Spartans defense in clearing the ball 38-of-41 times and allowed just four goals on ten free position shot attempts. Sutter leads the league in saves per game (9.07) and is second in save percentage (0.495).
 
Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

10462Andres Donayre / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University / Jr. / Lima, Peru
Donayre claims Tennis Athlete of the Week after leading the Eagles to a 1-1 week that saw them upset No. 4 ranked Saint Leo University. At #1 singles, the junior defeated Saint Leo's Ghali Mensour 6-1, 6-2. At #1 doubles against the Lions, Dinayre enjoyed a successful first-time partnership with Andrej Omeragic to upend SLU's No 23 duo of Aurel Ciocanu and Willem Van Den Akker 7-6. The Peruvian picked up the lone point against Lynn, defeating No. 10 Kay Bartman 6-3, 7-5 in the #1 singles position.


Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

9741Verena Schmid / Barry University / Sr. / Ellwangen, Germany
Schmid takes Tennis Athlete of the Week honors following her performance in Barry’s 7-0 win over No. 8 Nova Southeastern University. The Ellwangen, Germany native won both her doubles and singles match. In #2 doubles, Schmid paired with Jil Engelmann to win 6-3 over Isabella Lowrey/Chantal Nosievici. In #3 singles, Schmid defeated Nosievici 6-4,1-6, 10-5. On the season, Schmid is 5-2 in singles matches and 12-2 in doubles matches.

 
Rowing Boat of the Week

10456Varsity Eight / Florida Tech / Melbourne, Florida
Florida Tech’s Varsity 8 boat takes Boat of the Week honors after a strong showing at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships. The Varsity 8 boat finished first in both their time trial (6:12.404) and semifinals (7:06.982) heats. They grabbed a silver in the finals (6:58.419) as they beat all Division-II competition by at least 15 seconds and trailed only Division-I Kansas State University. Graysen Pensch (bow), Liza Lutter, Irina Djurovic, Anna Kayser Gallego, Theresa Gadilhe, Svetlana Ristin, Federica Pala, Natalia Arasa Bonavila and Taylor Stoni (coxswain) powered FIT's Varsity 8 in all heats.
