Weekly Honors in Baseball, Softball, Lacrosse, and Tennis

SSC Athletes of the Week | April 8 - 14, 2019

Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of April 8 - 14, 2019. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.


Baseball Player of the Week

10317Mitch Calandra / Eckerd College  / Sr. / C / Floral Park, New York
Calandra earns Player of the Week honors for his offensive performance in a series sweep of No. 14 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The senior catcher went 7-for-16 at the plate recording a hit and scoring a run in every game. Calandra’s top performance of the week came in the first game of the series where he went 5-for-7 with three home runs, eight RBI’s, and four runs scored against the Eagles. The Floral Park, New York native slashed .438/.500/1.000 during the three-game series with seven runs scored. The senior catcher now leads the SSC in hits with 61.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week

10316Frank Gonzalez / Barry University / Fr. / Miramar, Florida
Gonzalez captures his first-ever Pitcher of the Week award following his efforts in Barry's 8-1 victory against the University of Montevallo. The freshman started the first game of the three-game set, holding the Falcons to one hit over seven innings. Gonzalez struck out six batters on 78 pitches allowing only one batter to reach base. The Miramar, Florida product improved his record to 5-1 on the season with the win and lowered his earned run average to 3.58.  

 
Softball Player of the Week

10320Kacie Kelly / Saint Leo / Jr. / INF / Jacksonville, Florida
Kelly is awarded Player of the Week for the fourth time in her career for her performance in Saint Leo's three-game sweep of Barry University. The junior infielder was on base repeatedly throughout the series, going 4-for-5 at the plate with four walks and eight runs scored. During the series, Kelly reached base at least twice in every game and notched her 200th career hit. For the week, the Jacksonville, Florida product slashed .800/.900/.800 while also completing all six of her defensive chances in the field.


Softball Pitcher of the Week

10318Abbey Busby / Palm Beach Atlantic / So. / Raymond, Mississippi
Busby captured her third Pitcher of the Week honors this season after a series sweep against Florida Southern College. The sophomore started and received wins in all three games. Busby pitched a total of thirteen and a third innings, scattering ten hits and allowing no runs while striking out 11 batters. Her top performance of the week was the first game against the Moccasins where she went four innings allowing one hit and one walk while striking out five. The scoreless week lowered her season earned run average to 1.53 and moved her record to 21-10.  
 
Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
 
10322Philip Buque / Saint Leo University / Jr. / Attack / Whitby, Ontario
Buque secures Offensive Player of the Week honors following Saint Leo’s wins over Florida Southern College (23-14) and Florida Tech (16-15, OT). Against the Moccasins, Buque tallied six points from four goals and two assists and picked up four ground balls. Facing the Panthers, the junior attacker had seven points from five goals, including the overtime winner, and two assists while scooping up one ground ball. For the week, the Whitby, Ontario native registered 13 points from nine goals and four assists, while picking up five ground balls and causing one turnover. Buque is second in the SSC for goals per game (3.20) and fifth in points per game (4.20).
 
Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

10323Collin McClelland / Lynn University / Jr. / Goalie / Ellicott City, Maryland
McClelland was selected Defensive Player of the Week for his goaltending in Lynn’s wins over Palm Beach Atlantic University (15-7) and No. 16 University of Tampa (11-10). The Ellicott City, Maryland product had 25 saves during the week, 12 against the Sailfish and 13 against the Spartans, while allowing 15 goals across the two games, five and 10 respectively. McClelland also added five ground balls to his weekly stat sheet. The junior goalie lead the Fighting Knights defense in clearing the ball 31-of-42 times and allowing just four goals on twelve man-down situations. McClelland leads the league in goals against average (8.85) and is second in save percentage (0.531).

Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week

10325Dryden Brous / Lynn University / Jr. / FO / Ocean City, Maryland
Brous takes Specialist of the Week for his work at the dot during Lynn’s wins over Palm Beach Atlantic (15-7) and No. 16 University of Tampa (11-10). Against the Sailfish, the junior faceoff specialist won 18-of-24 faceoffs and picked up nine ground balls. Facing the Spartans, Brous won 9-of-26 faceoffs. In the match-up with the Spartans, both faceoff specialist are in the NCAA Division-II Top-5 in faceoff winning percentage. For the week, Brous won 27-of-50 faceoffs, scooped 15 ground balls, had two assists and one goal. This is his second weekly award this season and tenth overall, keeping him second all-time in men's lacrosse weekly awards.
 

Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

10313Kallie German / Rollins College / Sr. / Attack / Centreville, Maryland  
German is awarded Offensive Player of the Week after leading Rollins’ offense in wins over No. 5 University of Tampa (18-10) and No. 21 Saint Leo University (16-11). Against the Spartans, the senior attacker tallied 11 points from five goals and six assists while scooping one ground ball. Facing the Lions, the Centreville, Maryland native had four points from four assists and one ground ball. For the week, German had 15 points, five goals, 10 assists, two ground balls, and caused one turnover. German leads the league in points per game (5.57), third in goals per game (3.14), and second in assists per game (2.43).

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

10319Lindsay Van Beck / Rollins College / Sr. / Defense / Atlanta, Georgia
Van Beck claims Defensive Player of the Week honors for her defensive efforts during Rollins’ wins over No. 5 University of Tampa (18-10) and No. 21 Saint Leo University (16-11). For the week, senior defender caused five turnovers, picked up three ground balls, and had six draw controls. During the week, Van Beck and the Tars defense converted 21-of-33 clears and picked up 41 ground balls and allowed three free position shots.
 
 
Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

10324Bruno Faletto / Saint Leo / Fr. / Santiago, Chile
Bruno Faletto claims Tennis Athlete of the Week after going 4-0 to clinch back-to-back nationally-ranked matches for Saint Leo. At #1 singles, Faletto topped No. 13 Nicolo De Fraia of No. 16 Rollins College in a three-set battle (7-5, 2-6, 6-3) followed by a 7-6 (3-0), 6-2 win over No. 23 Valentin Masse from No. 6 Hawai’i Pacific University. In #2 doubles action, Faletto paired up with Leonardo Vega whose work earned Saint Leo the double match point in both competitions. Faletto and Vega defeated their Tars opponents 7-5 followed by a 7-6 (5-0) win against the Sharks.

Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

10321Natalija Popovic / Florida Southern College / Sr. / Cacak, Serbia
Popovic takes Tennis Athlete of the Week honors following her performance  in Florida Southern’s wins over No. 47 Rollins (4-3) and Florida Tech (4-3). Against the Tars, Popovic and doubles partner Selin Devrimci fell to Borg/Durzynski 4-6 at #1 doubles, and defeated Savanna Fuller 6-4, 6-3 at #3 singles. Against the Panthers, Popovic and Devrimci fell to Paricio/Vela 6-7 at #1 doubles, and defeated Maria Chun 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 at #3 singles. Popovic enters Florida Southern’s record books with 53 career singles wins, making her 11th in school history.
