SSC Athletes of the Week | March 25 - 31, 2019

Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of March 25 - 31, 2019. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.


Baseball Player of the Week

10262Sam Freitas / University of Tampa / Jr. / OF / Lawrenceville, Georgia
Freitas earns Player of the Week honors after leading Tampa offensively to a series victory against Lynn University. The junior went 9-for-14 at the plate with six runs scored, four stolen bases, and an RBI across the three games this week. Freitas’ top performance came in the final game of the series were he went 4-for-4 with two runs scored, a walk, a stolen base, and an RBI. The Lawrenceville, Georgia native slashed .643/.688/.643 while recording a hit in all three games and reaching base in 11 of his 16 plate appearances.


Baseball Pitcher of the Week

10259Mitchell Carroll / Palm Beach Atlantic University / Sr. / Coral Springs, Florida
Carroll claims Pitcher of the Week for the second time in his career after his performance in PBA’s 2-0 win at Saint Leo University. The senior picked up the lone victory for the Sailfish in the series by tossing seven shutout innings. Carroll threw 117 pitches to get his 21 outs, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out four. The Coral Springs, Florida product moved to 5-2 on the year and improved his earned run average to 2.74.

 
Softball Player of the Week

10258Jordan Davis / Rollins College / Sr. / OF / Winter Springs, Florida
Davis is named Player of the Week after her performance in Rollins’ series sweep of Eckerd College. The senior leadoff hitter sparked the Tars lineup by going 9-for-12 at the plate, scoring three runs, and stealing five bases. The outfielder broke a Rollins record by getting a hit in 12 consecutive at-bats. For the week, the Winter Springs, Florida native slashed .750/.750/.833 and brought her season batting average to an SSC leading .522.



Softball Pitcher of the Week

9957Abbey Busby / Palm Beach Atlantic University / So. / Raymond, Mississippi
Busby captures a second Pitcher of the Week honor this season after her performances against No. 10 Florida Tech. The sophomore started all three of the games in the circle for the Sailfish, tossing 16 innings and recording a 1-1 record. The Raymond, Mississippi product allowed one earned run on nine hits and struck out 10 hitters. Busby earned a victory in the second game of the series following a complete game one-hitter where she allowed no earned runs. Across her three appearances, Busby posted a 0.42 earned run average while holding opposing batters to a .150 batting average. 
 
Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
 
10250Joe Appio / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Attack / Ocean Township, New Jersey
Appio secures Offensive Player of the Week honors for his performance in Florida Southern’s 19-10 victory of Palm Beach Atlantic University. The Ocean Township, New Jersey product registered four goals and six assists against the Sailfish for a total of 10 points. Appio had six shots on goal, five ground balls, and caused one turnover. He currently sits ninth in SSC assists per game with 1.64 and thirteenth in points per game with 3.18.
 
 
Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

10261Collin McClelland / Lynn University / Jr. / Goalie / Ellicott City, Maryland
McClelland was selected Defensive Player of the Week for his goaltending performance during Lynn University’s 10-8 win over RV Rollins College. The junior stopped 13 shots and scooped up three ground balls against the Tars. McClelland’s 13 saves pushed him to 297 career saves to become Lynn’s all-time saves leader. The Ellicott City, Maryland native and the Fighting Knights defense went 20-for-24 on clears and allowed one man-down goal on four attempts.


Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week

10055Ross Dickerson / University of Tampa / Jr. / FO / Berlin, Maryland
Dickerson takes Specialist of the Week for his efforts at the faceoff X during Tampa’s wins over Florida Tech (14-9) and New York Institute of Technology (16-12). Against the Panthers, the Berlin, Maryland native won 17-21 faceoffs and had 12 ground balls. Facing the Bears, Dickerson won 21-31 faceoffs and had 14 ground balls. For the week, the Spartan won 0.731% of his faceoffs and picked up 26 ground balls. Nationally, Ross still sits with the fifth best win percentage in the nation, 76.5.
 

Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

9743Claire Swanson / University of Tampa / Jr. / Midfield / Cheyenne, Wyoming
Swanson is awarded Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Tampa offense in wins over No. 3 Florida Southern College (16-14) and Young Harris College (24-7). The Cheyenne, Wyoming product tallied four goals and two assists against the Moccasins, and three goals and one assist against the Mountain Lions. For the week, Swanson took nine shots, placing eight on goal, picked up four ground balls, won 21 draw controls, and caused one turnover. Swanson leads the Sunshine State Conference in draw controls per game and is ranked seventh nationally.

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

9548Bridget Sutter / University of Tampa / So. / Goalie / Evergreen, Colorado
Sutter claims Defensive Player of the Week honors for her goaltending performance during the Spartans wins over No. 3 Florida Southern College (16-14) and Young Harris College (24-7). For the week, the Evergreen, Colorado native registered 19 saves, allowing 18 goals, and four ground balls. Sutter led the Spartans defense in clearing, successfully converting 32-of-36 attempts, and allowed five free position goals on eleven opportunities. In the Sunshine State Conference, Sutter is first in saves per game with 8.9.

 

Men's Golfer of the Week

10057Juan Jose Guerra / Nova Southeastern University / Sr. / Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
Jose Guerra secures Golfer of the Week honors for the fourth time this season after his tied for seventh finish at The Goodwin hosted by Stanford University. Competing against a field that featured five Top-25 NCAA Division I programs, the senior shot an opening round 77 before rebounding with closing rounds of 64 and 69 to finish at even par.



Women's Golfer of the Week

10248Josefina Foa Torres / Barry University / Jr. / Cordoba, Argentina
Foa Torres earns Golfer of the Week honors after her individual and team victory at the Barry Invitational. The junior shot a final round four-under to finish the tournament at nine-under par and two shots ahead of second place. Top-ranked Barry finished two-under as a team, nine strokes ahead of second place finisher No. 8 Florida Tech.


 

Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

10169Kay Bartmann / Lynn University / Sr. / Stuttgart, Germany
Bartmann earns Tennis Athlete of the Week after logging three victories in a 1-1 week for Lynn University. The Fighting Knights first fell to No. 1 Barry, 5-2, before bouncing back and sweeping No. 33 Florida Southern College, 7-0. Against Barry University, Bartmann went up against No. 3 Pierre Montrieul at the top flight, defeating the Buccaneer in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Against the Moccasin, Bartmann and partner Florian Clemares picked up a 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles before Bartmann secured another victory at No. 1 singles, taking down Tim Becker, 7-5, 6-3. The weekly award is Bartmann’s fifth of his career.


Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

10168Leolia Jeanjean / Lynn University / Sr. / Montpellier, France
Jeanjean takes Tennis Athlete of the Week for the third time this season for her performance in Lynn University’s wins over No. 1 Barry University (5-2), No. 12 Florida Southern College (7-0), and the University of Tampa (7-0).  Against the Buccaneers, Jeanjean and Ulyana Grib tallied a 6-4 win at the top flight. In singles, No. 40 Jeanjean upset No. 29 Carolin Schmidt at the top flight, 6-1, 6-4. Against the Moccasins, Jeanjean and Grib followed up with a 6-0 win at #1 doubles while Jeanjean logged another win over a ranked singles opponent at the top position, downing No. 64 Selin Devrmci, 6-1, 6-0. Jeanjean and Grib closed out the week with a 6-1 win at #1 doubles in the match against the Spartans before Jeanjean recorded another straight-set win at #1 singles (6-1, 6-0).

 
Women's Rowing Boat of the Week

10253Varsity Four / Nova Southeastern University / Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
Nova Southeastern takes Boat of the Week honors following their run up against several nationally ranked teams at the Central Sprints in Oklahoma. NSU's boat comprised of Miranda Sadlow (Coxswain), Samantha Loriot (Bow), Stephanie Fleming (2), Barbara Sansur (3), and Mikayla Switzer (4) ended with an 8:44.19 time in the first piece. In the second piece, Maydelissa Pinell swapped with Sadlow as the coxswain as the Sharks improved their time by over 14 seconds, placing ahead of both Rollins College and the combined team of Philadelphia College and Thomas Jefferson College crossing the finish line at 8:30.10.
