SSC Athletes of the Week | February 25 - March 3, 2019

Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of February 25 - March 3, 2019. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.


Men's Basketball Player of the Week

9736Conor Mckim / Rollins College / Jr. / G / Louisville, Kentucky
Mckim earns Player of the Week honors for his performances against Florida Tech and Florida Southern College. The junior from Louisville, Kentucky started the week with a career-high 27 points as well as six rebounds, five assists, and a steal in an 84-72 win against the Panthers. He then eclipsed his career high with 31 points during a 105-100 loss at the Moccasins, while also adding six rebounds, and four assists to his stat sheet. For the week, Mckim scored 58 points by shooting 70% from the floor (24-34), 61% from beyond the arc (11-18), and 88% from the free throw line (7-8). In his 72 minutes on the court, Mckim tallied 12 rebounds and nine assists.


Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

9737Daniel Mortensen / Barry University / Sr. / F / Islev, Denmark
Mortensen secures Defensive Player of the Week honors for his play in Barry’s wins against No. 15 Lynn University (64-63) and Saint Leo University (74-73). Mortensen and the Buccaneers held Lynn to 44.2% from the floor (23-52), allowing just 23 second-half points. Against the Lions, Mortensen blocked Saint Leo’s final shot to preserve the one-point victory. For the week, the senior recorded eight rebounds, four blocks, and three steals during the week. This is Mortensen’s seventh all-time SSC weekly award.
 
 
Women's Basketball Player of the Week

9740Christen Prasse / Nova Southeastern University / Gr. / G / Naperville, Illinois
Prasse takes home Player of the Week honors for the second time this season and third in her career following a Triple Double against Palm Beach Atlantic University in the final regular season game of 2018-19. The Naperville, Illinois product put up 13 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists in NSU's 77-53 win to record her third triple-double of the season. Prasse also added four steals while shooting 50% (6-12) from the floor.



Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

9745Dani Lozzi / Lynn University / So. / G / Horsham, England
Lozzi guided Lynn defensively in wins over Barry University (63-61) and the University of Tampa (53-45) to secure weekly SSC accolades. The Horsham, England native tallied two steals and eight defensive rebounds against Barry. She followed with two blocks, four steals, and four defensive rebounds against Tampa. Lozzi also provided the Fighting Knights with 19 points in her 69 minutes played.


 
Baseball Player of the Week

9734Zach Howard / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University / Sr. / OF / Land O’Lakes, Florida
Howard receives Player of the Week after leading the Eagles to an undefeated week (5-0), with a series sweep of Palm Beach Atlantic University and non-conference wins over Davenport University and University of Minnesota-Crookston. The senior was 6-for-17 on the week while scoring five runs and driving in ten. The Land O’Lakes, Florida native had four extra-base hits and drew five walks while slashing .353/.478/.824 on the week. Howard’s top performance came in a 19-4 victory over Minnesota-Crookston, where he went 4-for-4 at the plate with four runs scored and four RBI.


Baseball Pitcher of the Week

9739Keven Pimentel / University of Tampa / Sr. / Huntington Station, New York
Pimentel’s win over No.16 Nova Southeastern University earns him Pitcher of the Week honors for the third time in his career. The senior led the Spartans to a 14-0 victory where he struck out ten batters across seven scoreless innings. Pimentel was perfect through five and two-thirds before surrendering a hit which turned out to be his only baserunner allowed. The Hunting Station, New York product posted a .045 batting average against in the combined shutout.

 
Softball Player of the Week

9732Lindsay Gehring / Rollins College / So. / C / Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Gehring secures Player of the Week after a series sweep against the University of Tampa. The catcher was 4-for-9 including her league leading fifth homerun of the year. She also drove in the lone run during a 1-0 victory in game number two. The Fort Lauderdale, Florida native had two of her four hits going for extra bases and drove in four runs during the series, all while slashing .444/.444/.889 for the week.



Softball Pitcher of the Week

9742Abby Summers / Rollins College / Sr. / Weston, Missouri
Summers earns Pitcher of the Week honors with a complete game shutout against the University of Tampa. The senior took the circle in game two and struck out 14 batters in seven innings. She allowed just three baserunners, two hits, and a walk in the victory. The win takes Summers to 5-0 on the year and lowers her earned run average to 0.78.


 
Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
 
9738Sean Nolan / Florida Southern College / Fr. / Attack / Westchester, New York
Nolan earns Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in Florida Southern’s record-breaking 35-6 win over Emmanuel College. The freshman from Westchester, New York tallied five goals and seven assists against the Lions. Nolan took 11 shots, eight on goal, and picked up two ground balls during the game. Florida Southern’s 35 goals set a new NCAA Division-II record for goals in a game.
 

 
Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

9731Daniel Flock / Florida Tech / Sr. / Goalie / Ellicott City, Maryland
Flock takes Defensive Player of the Week for his goaltending performance in Florida Tech’s 12-10 win over Lenoir-Rhyne University. The Ellicott City, Maryland product registered 23 saves after facing 48 shots in the game, finishing with a 69.7% save percentage. The Panthers went 19-for-22 on clears and held the Bears to one extra-man goal on five opportunities. Flock’s 23 saves are a new Florida Tech record for saves in a game, and the win ties him for first in program history for career wins with 18.


Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week

9744Jordan Williams / Saint Leo University / So. / FO / Clermont, Florida
Williams was selected Specialist of the Week for his performance in Saint Leo’s 24-8 win over Georgian Court University. The Clermont, Florida product went 20-for-29 (68.9%) in faceoffs and picked up 12 ground balls against the Lions. Through five games this season, Williams has won 54 faceoffs and picked up 24 ground balls.


 

Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

9729Janee DeLuca / Saint Leo University / Jr. / Attack / East Syracuse, New York
DeLuca is awarded Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts in Saint Leo’s wins over the University of Mount Olive (12-11, 2OT) and Edinboro University (17-6). Against the Trojans, DeLuca tallied three points from three goals off six shots. She then tallied five points off five goals from eight shots against the Fighting Scots. For the week, the East Syracuse, New York native had eight points and added two ground balls.



Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

9743Claire Swanson / University of Tampa / Jr. / Midfield / Cheyenne, Wyoming
Swanson takes Defensive Player of the Week honors for her performance in Tampa’s 20-19 overtime loss to No. 9 Regis University. The junior had 11 draw controls, paired with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Additionally, the Cheyenne, Wyoming product had three goals and two assists against the Rangers. The Spartans went 33-for-36 on clearing attempts and forced 14 turnovers during the game.

 

Men's Golfer of the Week

9733Juan Jose Guerra / Nova Southeastern University / Sr. / Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
Guerra takes home Golfer of the Week accolades for his two-shot victory at the Saint Leo Invitational. The Dominican shot 71-64-72 over the three rounds at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club. Guerra fired a bogey-free 35 on the back nine of the final round to hold off Saint Leo's Alberto Castagnara and Valdosta State's Matt Anderson with a final total of 9-under, 207 for the week. Guerra remains just two wins shy of tying Ben Taylor for the most by a single player in NSU program history. This is his second weekly award this year and third all-time.


Women's Golfer of the Week

9730Lucy Eaton / Florida Tech / Sr. / Yorkshire, England
Eaton is named Golfer of the Week after winning the individual championship at the Battle at Hilton Head. The senior’s 1-over, 145 across 36 holes was enough to win by one stroke over her teammate Lauren Watson. In her first collegiate win, she becomes just the 10th golfer in program history to win a tournament. Her performance guided No. 15 Florida Tech to a 13-shot victory at the Battle at Hilton Head. Eaton paced all competitors in the tournament in par-4 scoring at 3.80, while her four birdies ranked second among all participants.
 

Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

9728Florian Clemares / Lynn University / Gr. / Lyon, France
Clemares earns Tennis Athlete of the Week for his performance during Lynn’s 5-2 victory over Rollins College. In doubles, Lynn and Rollins split the second and third flights with the lone point coming down to the top position. Clemares and partner Kay Bartmann persevered 7-6, 7-5 in a tiebreaker over the No. 17 Gai Feigin / Ziad Melhaoui to put Lynn up 1-0 going into singles play. Clemares logged the clinching fourth point with a three-set win at #3 singles. The Lyon, France native went up against Melhaoui again, the 21st-ranked singles player in Division II, securing a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 victory.


Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

9741Verena Schmid / Barry University / Sr. / Ellwangen, Germany
Schmid wins her second Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week of her career after leading Barry to a 6-1 victory over NCAA Division I opponent Georgetown University. The German teamed with Zuza Maciejewska for a 6-3 win at #1 doubles, and in #2 singles, the senior came back from a set down to win 3-6, 6-0, 6-2. Schmid and the No.1 ranked Barry team next travel to California where they will face four straight ranked opponents starting on March 6th against UC San Diego.
