MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Sunshine State Conference is pleased to announce the 2019 women’s swimming individual awards. Emma Sundstedt of Nova Southeastern University is named Swimmer of the Year, while Freshman of the Year honors fellow Shark Sasha Maslova. Jimi Kiner of the University of Tampa has been selected Coach of the Year by his peers.
 
SSC Swimmer, Freshman, and Coach of the Year awards are selected by a vote of the league's swimming coaches following the NCAA Division II National Championship. All-SSC swimmers were selected earlier this season following the conference championship meet held February 21-24 at the Long Center in Clearwater.

2019 SSC Women's Swimming All-Conference Teams

Sunstedt is the fourth athlete from Nova Southeastern, third consecutive1, to be named SSC Women’s Swimmer of the Year. At this year’s NCAA Championship meet, the sophomore earned four individual All-American honors with her finishes in the 500 Free (second), 1000 Free (third), 1650 Free (third), and 200 Free (fourth). She was also named SSC Swimmer of the Meet following 77 points in the league championship, with the majority coming from wins in the 500 Free, 1000 Free, and the 1650 Free with a time of 16:37.53 that stands as a new meet record. The Hasselby, Sweden product joins Florida Southern College’s Alli Crenshaw2 as the only athletes to win both SSC Swimmer and Freshman of the Year during their career.

Maslova becomes the third Shark to earn SSC Women’s Swimming Freshman of the Year honors3. The Moscow, Russia native set the conference overall record this season in the 200 Butterfly (1:58.65) as well as the meet record in the 400 IM (4:16.21) at the 2019 conference championship. Along with those two events, she also posted an SSC meet win in the 200 IM and a sixth place finish in the 200 Breast. At nationals, Maslova’s top race was a fourth place finish in the 200 Fly. She also posted an eighth place finish in the 400 IM and 12th place finish in the 200 IM.

Kiner has been selected SSC Coach of the Year by his peers following a conference championship and a fifth place finish among 45 scoring teams at the national championship. Kiner brings the award back to Tampa for the first time since Ed Brennan swept the first four honors in conference history4.
