SSC Athletes of the Week | March 11 - 17, 2019

Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of March 11 - 17, 2019. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.


Baseball Player of the Week

10074Alec Aleywine / University of Tampa / Jr. / 1B / Panama City, Florida
Aleywine earns Player of the Week honors after leading Tampa offensively to a 4-0 week, including a series sweep over conference opponent Saint Leo University. The junior was 7-for-12 at the plate with nine runs batted in, four runs scored, two home runs, and four walks. The Panama City, Florida native’s top game of the week came in the second game against Saint Leo where he went 3-for-4 with seven runs batted in and two home runs. The first baseman slashed .583/.688/1.250 and had a hit in all four games this week.


Baseball Pitcher of the Week

10077Nathan Campbell / Nova Southeastern University / Fr. / St. Petersburg, Florida
Campbell’s complete-game effort in a 6-1 victory over Florida Tech earns him Pitcher of the Week honors. The freshman gave up a solo home run in the first inning before settling in and holding the Panthers to one hit and zero runs for the complete game. The southpaw struck out six and walked none across nine innings of work. The win takes the St. Petersburg native to 5-1 on the year and helped Nova Southeastern secure its third conference series win of the season.

 
Softball Player of the Week

10060Vanessa Rubio / Florida Tech / Jr. / Inf / Lake Worth, Florida
Rubio captures her first-ever Player of the Week honors after a 4-1 week for the Panthers, which included a series win over conference opponent Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The Lake Worth, Florida product went 6-for-11 the five game stretch, with half of her hits going for extra bases. Rubio slashed .545/.625/.818 while driving in seven runs this week, including at least one RBI in each game.


Softball Pitcher of the Week

10056Makaleigh Dooley / University of Tampa / Sr. / Tampa, Florida
Dooley wins Pitcher of the Week accolades for the tenth time in her career after appearing in four games during the Spartans' 5-0 week. The Tampa native started four games this week and captured two complete-game wins against Lynn and one against Southwest Minnesota State University. The Tampa native tossed 24 innings across her four appearances in the circle, surrendering nine hits, two earned runs and striking out 21 batters. For the week, Dooley registered a .057 opponent batting average and a .48 WHIP.
 
Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
 
10058Andrew Kew / University of Tampa  / Sr. / Attack / Oakville, Ontario, Canada
Kew takes Offensive Player of the Week honors for his performance in Tampa’s 17-11 win over Westminster College. During the game, the Ontario native tallied seven goals and five assists. Kew took 16 shots, landed nine on goal, and picked up two ground balls in victory. This is Kew’s second weekly award this year, and seventh all-time.
 


 
Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

10079Evan Schimek / Rollins College / Sr. / Defense / Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Schimek was selected Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in Rollins’ wins over No. 20 Colorado Mesa University (12-8) and Colorado State University-Pueblo (22-8). Against the No. 20 Mavericks, Schimek caused five turnovers and picked up a ground ball. He followed with three caused turnovers and three ground balls against the Thunderwolves. The Fort Lauderdale, Florida product  helped the Tars defense to 36-44 in clearing and gave up one man-down goal in five opportunities.


Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week

10055Ross Dickerson / University of Tampa / Jr. / Midfield / Berlin, Maryland
Dickerson earns Specialist of the Week honors for his performance at the faceoff X in Tampa’s 17-11 win over Westminster College. The Berlin, Maryland native won 19-of-25 faceoffs (76.0%), picked up 13 ground balls, and had one assist against the Griffins. On the season, Dickerson is 139-187 in faceoffs and sits sixth in NCAA Division II in faceoff winning percentage (0.743). This is Dickerson’s third weekly award this season and sixth all-time.

 

Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

10075Paige Brock / Rollins College / Sr. / Attack / Winter Springs, Florida
Brock is awarded Offensive Player of the Week for her performance in Rollins’ wins over the University of Mount Olive (14-6), Wingate University (16-6), and Holy Family University (25-4). Against the Trojans, the Winter Springs, Florida product tallied four goals on eight shots. Facing the Bulldogs, she had five goals on seven shots, all seven landing on goal. Finally against the Tigers, the senior attacker had one goal and one assist. Brock recorded a total of 10 goals and one assist last week, compiling a shooting percentage of .625, and an on-goal percentage of .875.

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

9956Dani Bursinger / Florida Southern College / Sr. / Midfield / Powell, Ohio
Bursinger takes Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second consecutive week following Florida Southern’s wins over RV Slippery Rock University (20-7) and No. 24 Florida Tech (16-4). The Powell, Ohio native won six draw controls, picked up two ground balls, and recorded a goal and an assist against Slippery Rock to start the week. Bursinger went on to win seven draw controls, pick up two ground balls, and caused two turnovers while recording an assist in a win over the Panthers.

 

Men's Golfer of the Week

10057Juan Jose Guerra / Nova Southeastern University / Sr. / Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
Guerra takes home Golfer of the Week honors for the third time this season after winning Southeastern Collegiate individual title honors at the Kinderlou Forest Golf Club this past week. During his second consecutive tournament win, the Dominican Republic native shot rounds of 67, 65, 67 to run away from the field with an eight stroke victory. Guerra recorded just one bogey over his final 53 holes to move within one win of tying the NSU program record for most all-time.

Women's Golfer of the Week

10059Tilda Larsson / Barry University / Sr. / Emmaboda, Sweden
Larsson is named Golfer of the Week for the 10th time in her career after capturing an individual and team victory at the Fujikura Invitational. The senior shot two rounds of 71 to finish at two-under-par and win by two strokes over a field that featured six of the Top-7 teams in the country according to the Golfstat Relative Rankings. The Swede led the Barry team to a twelve stroke victory over second place Dallas Baptist University.  
 

Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

10061Guillermo De Nicolas-Ruiz / Rollins College / Sr. / Villanueva de la Cañada, Spain
Nicolas-Ruiz earns Tennis Athlete of the Week honors for his performance in Rollins’ wins over No. 22 Ferris State University (5-2), Bluefield State University (4-1), and Northwood University (4-0). The Villanueva de la Cañada, Spain product went 2-0 at #2 singles, and 3-0 at #3 doubles for the week. In his two singles matches, Nicolas-Ruiz defeated Ferris State’s Nur Ramdani Iswan 6-3, 7-5, and Bluefield State’s No. 7 ranked Arthur Figuiere 6-1, 6-4. Nicolas-Ruiz and doubles partner Atakan Gezer won all three of their matches by a score of 6-2.

Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

10078Natalie Espinal / Nova Southeastern University / Fr. / Tegucigalpa, Honduras
Espinal takes Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades for her performance in Nova Southeastern’s two wins last week. The Tegucigalpa, Honduras native won all of her singles and doubles matches vs. No. 25 Wayne State University and against NAIA No. 2 Keiser University, while playing up one level in first-flight singles. Her second win of the week was key for the Sharks, as her rally in tiebreakers against NAIA No. 5 Keiser's Daniela Farfan for a 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 win tied the score on a Sharks comeback to a 4-3 victory. Playing at No. 2 doubles with Sarah Wardenburg, Espinal was perfect on the week and her pair delivered the team doubles win at Keiser with a 7-6 victory over the NAIA's ninth-ranked pair.
Women's Rowing Boat of the Week

10076Varsity Eight / Barry University / Miami Shores, Florida
Barry’s Varsity Eight paced its way to a first place finish against four other V8 crews during the 2019 Spring Break Race hosted by Rollins College on Lake Maitland. The Buccaneers posted a 1950-meter time of 6:31.70, besting two University of Florida boats as well as boats from Rollins and Stockton University. The crew was composed of Katelynn Estrada (coxswain), Zorica Mrdja, Michelle Etchebaster-Martins, Maria Stampolkou, Sarolta Adonyi, Lana Sumner-Borema, Alexandra Alonso, Alejandra Alonso, and Janika Koelblin.
