SSC Athletes of the Week | February 18 - 24, 2019

Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of February 18 - 24, 2019. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.


Men's Basketball Player of the Week

9418Mark Matthews / Nova Southeastern University / Jr. / F / Bonita Springs, Florida
Matthews earns SSC Player of the Week for the fifth time thanks to his part in No. 3 Nova Southeastern’s road conference win against No. 14 Lynn University. The junior from Bonita Springs, Florida opened the week with 23 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and two steals in 37 minutes against Lynn. He followed with a 16 point, 12 rebound performance against the University of Tampa, which helped NSU clinch sole possession of its first SSC title. For the week, Matthews totaled 39 points (18-for-35), 22 rebounds, six assists, and three steals. He ranks among the Top-3 in the SSC in scoring, rebounding, and field goal percentage.


Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

9539Marco Downer / University of Tampa / Fr. / C / Portmore, Jamaica
Downer secures Defensive Player of the Week honors after registering the first triple-double in the SSC this year. The freshman had 15 rebounds, 12 points, and 10 blocks in a loss against No. 3 Nova Southeastern University this past week. He’s the 15th player in NCAA D2 to record a triple-double this season. The Portmore, Jamaica product also tallied eight rebounds, four blocks and a steal in a win against Saint Leo University this week.
 
Women's Basketball Player of the Week

9261Camille Giardina / Florida Southern College / Sr. / G / Sarasota, Florida
Giardina earns her second Player of the Week award this season after leading Florida Southern in conference wins against Eckerd College and Barry University. The senior from Sarasota, Florida scored 24 points in the NCAA D2 Showcase Game at Eckerd and followed with 21 at home against Barry. For the week, Giardina scored her 45 points by shooting 53% (17-32) from the field, 44% (4-9) from three, and 100% (7-7) from the line. The Senior also added five steals, three assists, and three rebounds to her stat sheet as FSC clinched the 2019 SSC regular season title.

Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

9546Dori Nagy / University of Tampa / So. / F / Pecs, Hungary
Nagy led Tampa’s defense in conference victories over Saint Leo University and Nova Southeastern University this week. The Hungarian recorded double-doubles in both games, scoring 20 points in each game and pulling in 24 total rebounds. Nagy and the Spartans held both opponents below 35 percent from the field.


 
Baseball Player of the Week

9536Chris Cabrera / Barry University / Jr. / DH / Miami, Florida
Cabrera receives Player of the Week for the first time in his career after leading Barry University to a road sweep of No. 13 Florida Southern College. The junior from Miami went 5-10 in the series raising his average to .368 on the season. The designated hitter had two multi-hit games while scoring two runs and driving in three. The junior slashed .500/.545/.700 for the series and the sweep helped Barry get to 8-3 on the season.



Baseball Pitcher of the Week

9540Myles Gayman / Barry University / Jr. / Greencastle, Pennsylvania
Gayman receives Pitcher of the Week honors while earning his first win of the season. The Greencastle, Pennsylvania native went seven scoreless frames leading the Buccaneers to an 8-0 win over No. 13 Florida Southern College. Gayman guided Barry to a home shutout of the Moccasins for the first time since 2016. The junior surrendered only three hits while striking out five over his seven innings.

 
Softball Player of the Week

9547Mariana Pereira / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University / Sr. / INF-OF / Marillia, Brazil
Pereira claims Player of the Week for the first time in her career after totaling eight hits in ten at-bats during Embry-Riddle’s home sweep of Eckerd College. Of the senior's eight hits, four went for extra bases. The Brazilian totaled 13 bases while drawing three walks, scoring five runs, and driving in seven runs across the three-game series as she slashed .800/.846/1.300.



Softball Pitcher of the Week

9545Melanie Murphy / Florida Tech / Sr. / Melbourne, Florida
Murphy led Florida Tech to three wins during the week earning her Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time in her career. The senior started the week by going seven innings surrendering only one unearned run while striking out five in a win (2-1) over Columbus State University. The highlight of the week for the Melbourne, Florida native was the perfect game against No. 3 University of North Georgia. During the first perfect game of her career, she faced the minimum 21 batters, allowing no runners on base, and finished the perfect performance off with her fifth strikeout of the game. It was only the second time all year the Nighthawks had been shutout. Over her 21 innings, she combined for a 1.67 era, six runs (five earned) on 12 hits, and struck out 13 batters.
 
Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
 
9544Jake Mosher McGraw / University of Tampa / Jr. / Attack / Saint John, New Brunswick
Mosher McGraw earns Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in No. 12 Tampa's 16-10 win over No. 17 Lenoir-Rhyne University. The Saint John, New Brunswick native tallied five points off of three goals and two assists against the Bears. He took six shots, placing four on cage and added two ground balls in the victory.
 

 
Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

9535B.J. Borowski / University of Tampa / So. / Goalie / Frederick County, Maryland
Borowski earns Defensive Player of the Week honors for his goaltending performance in No. 12 Tampa’s 16-10 win over No. 17 Lenoir-Rhyne University. The Frederick County, Maryland product registered a 65.5% save percentage while facing 29 shots on goal. The sophomore made 19 saves, allowed ten goals, and picked up six ground balls. With the play of Borowski, the Spartans went 10-19 on clearing attempts and did not allow a goal on five man-down chances.


Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week

9359Ross Dickerson / University of Tampa / Jr. / FO / Berlin, Maryland
Dickerson was selected as Specialist Player of the Week for his performance at the faceoff X in Tampa’s 16-10 win over No. 17 Lenoir-Rhyne University. Dickerson, a native of Berlin, Maryland, went 23-28 (82.1%) in faceoffs and added 15 ground balls against the Bears. The junior has been named Specialist of the Year five times in his career. As of February 22nd, Dickerson’s 76.9%  faceoff winning percentage ranks him No. 8 in Division II.

 

Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

9549Carly Vaccaro / University of Tampa / Jr. / Attack / Mooresville, North Carolina
Vaccaro earns Offensive Player of the Week honors for her performance in Tampa’s wins over No. 11 Limestone College (20-11) and North Greenville University (14-6). The Mooresville, North Carolina native tallied seven points on three goals and four assists against the Saints and six points from six goals against the Crusaders. The junior added one ground ball and two caused turnovers across the two victories.



Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

9548Bridget Sutter / University of Tampa / So. / Goalie / Evergreen, Colorado
Sutter was selected as Defensive Player of the Week following her efforts in goal during the Tampa’s wins over No. 11 Limestone College (20-11) and North Greenville University (14-6). The Evergreen, Colorado product registered 12 saves on 23 shot attempts against Limestone and 13 saves on 19 shot attempts against North Greenville. Sutter picked up six ground balls and helped the Spartans to 33-36 in clearing attempts.

 

Men's Golfer of the Week

9550Michael VanDerLaan / Florida Southern College / Sr. / Southbury, Connecticut
VanDerLaan earns Men’s Golfer of the Week after his individual second place finish and Florida Souther’s second-place finish at the Newberry College Invitational. The Southbury, Connecticut product paced the field after begining the tournement with rounds of 65 and 67. On Tuesday when temperatures plunged to 50 degrees with rain and 20 MPH winds, two-thirds of the field shot in the 80’s or 90’s, the senior shot an 85 to finish runner-up and one shot behind the winner.


Women's Golfer of the Week

9008Sehar Atwal / Rollins College / Jr. / Dehli, India
Atwal earns Golfer of the Week after winning the Lady Moc Classic, hosted by Florida Southern College, at Grasslands Golf and Country Club. Atwal's 5-under, 211 (69-71-71) resulted in a one-shot victory over Sophia Garcia Austt from Nova Southeastern University. In the junior’s third career win, she was the only player in the field of 103 to have all three rounds under par.


 


Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

9537Miroslav Cvjetan / Florida Southern College / Fr. / Belgrade, Serbia
Cvjetan earns Tennis Athlete of the Week for his performance in two matches. The Serbian went undefeated in No. 4 singles play as FSC claimed a 5-2 upset win over No. 12 Palm Beach Atlantic University and fell 2-5 to No. 6 Saint Leo University. Cvjetan won in three sets over Noel Kunz from Saint Leo by a score of 6-4, 6-7, 6-4. He then won  in three sets by a score of 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 over Thomas Salmon from the Sailfish.



Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

9542Leolia Jeanjean / Lynn University / Sr. / Montpellier, France
Jeanjean earns Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week for her performance in two matches. The Montpellier, France native won all four of her matches at the top positions this week to help the No. 2 Lynn University women’s tennis team win both of its contests. The Fighting Knights first defeated No. 16 Rollins College in SSC action, 7-0, before going on the road and winning against Flagler College, 4-0. Against the Tars, Jeanjean and Natalia Siedliska teamed up for a 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles before Jeanjean posted a 6-2, 6-1 singles victory at the top singles flight. Jeanjean and Siedliska then logged a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles at Flagler, with Jeanjean controlling her No. 1 singles matchup against the Saints 6-0, 6-0.
