SSC Athletes of the Week | September 30 - October 6, 2019

Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of September 30 - October 6, 2019. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.


Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week

11817Katie McKiel / University of Tampa / Jr. / Outside Hitter / Colorado Springs, Colorado
McKiel earns her second weekly award this season following her offensive performance during Tampa's 3-0 week. The Colorado Springs, Colorado native recorded a total of 45 kills and 26 digs while picking up 48 points across the three conference matches. McKiel was at her best this week against Florida Southern College, where she recorded 18 kills and finished the game with a career-high .630 hitting percentage. The junior also recorded a 15 kill / 18 dig double-double against Lynn University. For the week, McKiel hit .427 with 4.1 kills and 2.60 digs per set.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week

11816Audren Rose / Barry University / Jr. / Libero / Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Rose totaled 78 digs (9.75 per set) in two Barry road wins to earn Defensive Player of the Week for the fourth time in her career. On Friday, the Brazilian broke a school record with 52 digs during a 3-1 victory over Florida Tech. The performance stands as the sixth most single-match digs all-time in NCAA Division II and most for an SSC player since 2000. Then, on Saturday, Rose punched out another 26 digs against previously undefeated Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University as the Buccaneers won 3-1 in Daytona Beach.

Volleyball Setter of the Week

11829Sydney Case / Eckerd College / So. / Setter / Lakeville, Minnesota
Case is awarded Setter of the Week for the second time this season after totaling 99 assists and 17 digs in road wins at Saint Leo University and Rollins College. The Lakeville, Minnesota product recorded a 54 assist / 10 dig double-double while adding three kills in four sets against the Lions. Case then tallied 45 assists and seven digs in four sets against the Tars. She averaged 12.38 assists per set for the week and is currently second overall in the SSC with 10.98 assists per set.

Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

11819Lukas Hombach / Lynn University / Jr. / Forward / Gummersbach, Germany
Hombach takes Offensive Player of the Week accolades following his game-winner in Lynn's lone match this week. The junior scored his third goal of the season in the 58th minute on the road at Florida Southern College. Hombach now was career-highs in goals (3) and points (7), which also ties him for the team lead in both categories. With the play of Hombach, Lynn sits alone atop the SSC standings.


Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

11820Konstantin Fuhry / Lynn University / So. / Goalkeeper / Freiburg, Germany
Fuhry's time in goal against Florida Southern College this week has netted him Defensive Player of the Week honors. The German turned away a career-high five shots to keep the Fighting Knights undefeated on the season. Fuhry has also extended his shutout streak to 314 minutes following the third consecutive shutout for Lynn.


Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

11818Emma Heikkila / Nova Southeastern University / Sr. / Forward / Tornio, Finland
Heikkila repeats as Offensive Player of the Week by extended her scoring streak to seven games as NSU now has a program-best 9-0 start. The senior tallied a goal and an assist in the Sharks' 3-0 victory against Barry University on Wednesday. The Finn then notched the game-winner in the 79th minute of Saturday's 1-0 triumph at Florida Tech. Heikkila's current seven-game goal streak is the first by a Sharks player since Shurell Burton accomplished the feat back in 2006. The weekly award is the fourth of her career.


Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

11815Paige Napolitano / Nova Southeastern University / Sr. / Defender / Odessa, Florida
Napolitano repeats as Defensive Player of the Week as she again lifts NSU to a pair of shutouts. The defender's performance this week helped keep Barry University without a shot in the first half of last Wednesday's 3-0 victory. The Napolitano powered Shark defense then limited Florida Tech to a total of six shots in a 1-0 road win, marking the Sharks' eighth shutout of the season. Nova Southeastern leads the nation in goals-against average (0.11).

Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week

11823Calahan Warren / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University / Sr. / Auburndale, Florida
Warren had the best race of his collegiate career at the 45th Charles Bowles Invitational on Saturday. The Auburndale, Florida product finished as the meet runner-up in 24:49.4, breaking his personal-best time by more than 15 seconds and setting the Eagles' top 8K time in the NCAA II era. Warren becomes the program's seventh-fastest 8K runner thanks to his effort on Saturday.


Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week

11824Sarah Edens / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University / Sr. / Gainesville, Florida
Edens is awarded her second weekly honor this season following her 20th career Top-10 finish this past Saturday at the 45th Charles Bowles Invitational. She led the Eagles with a time of 18:15.2, which is the 12th-fastest 5K time in program history. The Gainesville, Florida native placed sixth overall at the event and now has six Runner of the Week accolades in her career.

Men's Golf of the Week

11826Martin Westerlund / Palm Beach Atlantic University / Sr. / Stockholm, Sweden
Westerlund captures Golfer of the Week following the individual title at last week's Griffin Invitational. The senior won the title by seven strokes, posting a school record 7-under (65) in the first round and 3-under (69) in both the second and third rounds. The Swede's 13-under performance helped PBA capture the team title at the event. Both the individual and team championships are program firsts since the university reinstated golf in 2013. Westerlund is the first Sailfish to be named Men's Golfer of the Week since October 9, 2017 (Dylan Allen).

Women's Golfer of the Week

11822Hanna Ahlander / Nova Southeastern University / So. / Vasteras, Sweden
Competing in a field that featured nine NCAA Division I programs, Ahlander led the Sharks to a 15-shot victory at the Bubba Burger Jacksonville Classic. The sophomore captured individual medalist honors after setting the 54-hole tournament record with a score of 6-under. She was one of just two players to score in red numbers during the week and topped the field in both Par-4 (3.87) and Par-5 (4.75) scoring average, as well as in total birdies with 14.

Men's Swimmer of the Week

11828Vincent Lijoi / Nova Southeastern University / Sr. / Bradenton, Florida
Lijoi captures Swimmer of the Week honors by helping the Sharks to back-to-back SSC wins over Rollins College and Florida Tech. The Bradenton, Florida native won the 1000 freestyle and 500 freestyle against Rollins in 9:48.89 and 4:41.71, respectively. He also won two events in a dual meet against Florida Tech, first winning the 200 free in 1:45.02 before going on to win the 500 freestyle for the second-straight competition in 4:44.19.


Women's Swimmer of the Week

11821Emma Sundstedt / Nova Southeastern University / Jr. / Hasselby, Sweden
Sundstedt swims to her fifth career weekly award with her performance in back-to-back SSC dual meet wins. In a 145-60 victory over Rollins College, Sundstedt finished first in the 1000 freestyle in 10:27.64. She also picked up the win in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:10.07. During a 145-59 victory over Florida Tech, Sundstedt earned her third-consecutive win in the 500 freestyle in 5:15.52, while also serving as the anchor in NSU's first-place 200 medley relay team (1:39.75).
