Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week
Nicole Mattson / Florida Southern College / Sr. / Outside Hitter / Oviedo, Florida
Mattson captures her fourth career Player of the Week award by recording 85 kills (6.07 per set) across four matches as Florida Southern went undefeated at the Terrace Hotel Classic this past weekend. The Oviedo, Florida product had back-to-back matches with 27 kills against Catawba College and West Texas A&M University*. Mattson also tallied 17 kills in a four-set victory over No. 4 Ferris State University and 14 against Drury University*. The play of Mattson helps the Moccasins improve their home win streak to 20-straight matches dating back to last year. She currently leads the nation in attacks per set (15.29 per set). With the weekend sweep, Florida Southern improves to 5-3 on the season.
Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Tierra Porter / Florida Southern College / Fr. / Middle Blocker / Meridianville, Alabama
Porter tallied 28 total blocks (2.0 per set), 21 kills, and four digs as the Moccasins went 4-0 over the weekend, including a win over No. 4 Ferris State University. In a win over Drury University*, the Meridianville, Alabama native tallied 12 total blocks, the most by any Moccasin since 2012. Porter then recorded six blocks against West Texas A&M University* and five each against Ferris State and Catawba College. Her five solo blocks against Drury were the most for a Moccasin since Kayshia Brady in 2014.
Volleyball Setter of the Week
Bethany Besancenez / Florida Southern College / Sr. / Setter / St. Peters, Missouri
Besancenez totaled 185 total assists (13.21 per set) as Florida Southern went 4-0 at the Terrace Hotel Classic this past weekend. The St. Peters, Missouri native had 47 assists in a 3-1 win over No. 4 Ferris State University, 35 assists against Drury University* and finished the weekend with 53 assists against Catawba College and 50 against West Texas A&M University*. Besancenez is now second in FSC school history with 4,253 career assists. The weekly award is the fifth of her career.
Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Stefan Avram / Rollins College / Sr. / Forward / Orlando, Florida
Avram earns Offensive Player of the Week honors following his three goals as the Tars went 2-0-0 on opening weekend. The Orlando native scored both goals for Rollins in a 2-1 upset win over No. 18 Wingate University. He then tallied the game-winner against Regis University in the 64th minute. The weekly award is the second of his career.
Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Abdiel Martinez / Rollins College / Fr. / Goalkeeper / Miami, Florida
Martinez started the first two games of his college career, playing all 180 minutes in Rollins' first two contests of the year. The Miami native led the Tars in an upset win over No. 18 Wingate University, where he made six saves while surrendering a penalty kick goal. Martinez made an additional two saves while allowing one goal, in a 2-1 win over Regis University.
Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Moeko Morse / University of Tampa / Fr. / Forward / Chesapeake, Virginia
Morse provided Tampa with all the offensive production it needed to get a win over No. 18 Mississippi College. The freshman forward from Chesapeake, Virginia scored the game’s equalizer in the 37th minute off an assist from Elena Barr and Lacy Nasello. She then knocked in the game-winner in the 48th minute and added insurance in the 83rd. With the play of Morse, UT opens up the season with a 1-0-1 record.
Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Jez Rubalcava / Palm Beach Atlantic University / Jr. / Goalkeeper / Whittier, California
Rubalcava earned two shutouts and had 12 total saves in her first two starts for the Sailfish. Rubalcava, a junior from Whittier, California, tallied two saves against the University of Alabama in Huntsville to give the Sailfish a 2-0 win. She also had a career-high 10 saves in a 0-0 tie against an undefeated Tusculum University team that upset No. 23 Nova Southeastern University 3-2 on Friday. Her efforts helped PBA start the season with a (1-0-1) record and as a result, has yet to allow a goal in the 2018 season.
Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week
Mason Jones / Florida Southern College / So. / Titusville, Florida
Jones took first place overall at Florida Southern’s Holloway Park Preseason Festival (8K) in Lakeland. He posted a 26:16.98 time to win by 51.5 seconds over teammate John Wagner and paced FSC to one-point over Saint Leo University (28 to 29). The win is the first of his collegiate career.
Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week
Laura Tobin / Saint Leo University / Sr. / Clonmel, Ireland
Tobin opened the 2018 season with a first-place finish at Florida Southern College’s Holloway Park Preseason Festival Saturday. She recorded a time of 19:49.9 on the 5K course to take first out of the 93 total runners while guiding the Lions to a second place team finish in Division II standings. The senior out of Clonmel, Ireland finished 10.8-seconds ahead of second place, and 27.8-seconds faster than Sunshine State Conference foe Florida Southern's top-runner (fourth place).
