SSC Athletes of the Week | April 16 - 22, 2018

Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of April 16 - 22, 2018. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.


Baseball Player of the Week

8742Kyle Marsh / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University / Jr. / 2B / Port Orange, Florida
Marsh was instrumental in Embry-Riddle’s four wins over the week, including the team's first-ever sweep of an SSC opponent. On Wednesday, Marsh had a perfect 4-for-4 game against NAIA No. 16 Keiser University, while also walking twice, scoring three runs (including the walk-off game-winning run in the 10th) and adding an RBI in ERAU's win over the Seahawks. Then, the Port Orange, Florida native led the Eagles to the sweep of Lynn University, ending the week hitting .529 (9-for-17) with three doubles, two homers, six RBIs and 11 runs scored. Marsh also went a perfect 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts for the Blue and Gold while boasting a .619 on-base percentage and pushing his hitting streak to 20 games.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week

8739Mitchell Carroll / Palm Beach Atlantic University / Jr. / P / Coral Springs, Florida
Carroll is named Pitcher of the Week after allowing just two hits in 6.1 innings to pick up a win against No. 7 Florida Southern College. The Coral Springs, Florida native allowed just five base runners during his outing, as he left the game with the Sailfish having a four-run lead. Carroll finished with three strikeouts, two hit batsmen, a walk, and a .100 opponent batting average.
 
 
Softball Player of the Week

8744Kayla Sheffield / Lynn University / So. / DP / Auburndale, Florida
Sheffield was a key contributor to Lynn winning its first series over Rollins College in 15 years (2003). The Auburndale, Florida product logged multi-hit games and drove in runs in all three contests while slashing .600/.632/1.200 against the Tars. The sophomore was the final home run in back-to-back-to-back home runs during the first game of a doubleheader against Rollins. She moved into a tie for second in the league with her second home run of the series. In addition, she tossed a complete game in the second game of the series, allowing just two runs to earn the victory in the circle.    
 
Softball Pitcher of the Week

Makaleigh Dooley / University of Tampa / Jr. / P / Tampa, Florida
Dooley repeats as Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week, third overall, after tossing three complete games. The Tampa native played a key role in the Spartans' series upset against No.19 Saint Leo University. Dooley tossed a pair of shutouts in two 1-0 wins over the Lions, keeping an SLU offense that averages over five runs per game off the board. In the final game of the series and the second in a doubleheader, Dooley’s run support had run out. The junior came up with a third seven-inning performance for the Spartans, this time allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out four. Dooley gave up no walks in her 21 innings pitched and allowed just one extra-base hit. She struck out 13 batters while finishing the weekend with a 0.67 ERA.
 
Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

8741Charlie Kurtenbach / Saint Leo University / Jr. / Attack / Issaquah, Washington
Kurtenbach scored six goals and tallied one assist for a seven-point week helping the Saint Leo Lions to the program’s first-ever SSC regular season title. Saint Leo closed the regular season 2-0 on the road at No. 7 University of Tampa (W, 10-9) and No. 13 Florida Tech (W, 16-13). Kurtenbach’s seven points were paired with three ground balls and a caused turnover. The junior attacker compiled a .545 shooting percentage while placing two-thirds of his shots on frame. Kurtenbach racked up five-points from four goals and one assist leading the Lions’ attack at Tampa. He then netted two more goals at Florida Tech.

Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Thomas Tatarian / Saint Leo / Jr. / Goal / Shoreham, New York
Tatarian’s work in the net allowed Saint Leo to clinch the program’s first-ever Sunshine State Conference regular-season title. Saint Leo defeated No. 7 University of Tampa (W, 10-9) and No. 13 Florida Tech (W, 16-13) last week. Tatarian recorded 22 saves while facing 82 shots., earning a .500 week save percentage. The junior tallied six saves at Tampa followed by a 16 save performance at Florida Tech.

 

Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

8740Rachel Crawford / University of Tampa / Jr. / Attack / Arnold, Maryland
Crawford earns Offensive Player of the Week accolades for her play in two conference games. Against Saint Leo University, Crawford netted a goal and had two assists in addition to picking up two ground balls. Then on Saturday against the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Crawford broke program records for the most points scored in a single game (10) as well as the most assists scored in a single game (7). Tampa ended the week 2-0, defeating the Lions on Wednesday by a final score of 12-6, and then taking down the Eagles, Saturday by a final score of 23-8.

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Alexa Scudillo / University of Tampa / So. / Defense / Millstone, New Jersey
Scudillo led Tampa’s defense across two SSC wins this week, beating the Saint Leo University (12-6) and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (23-8). Scudillo caused two turnovers against the Lions and four against the Eagles. Also, against Embry-Riddle, Scudillo picked up five ground balls and won three draw controls for the Spartans.


 

Men's Golfer of the Week

8745Will Hall / Rollins College / Jr. / Portsmouth, Rhode Island
Rollins claimed victory at the Rhode Island Invitational (tie with the University of Rhode Island) this past week. Rollins, the only non-Division I team in the field, were led by Hall who finished tied for fifth place at 2-over (76-70-146). The Tars shot rounds of 296-289 in a rain-shortened tournament at Quidnessett Golf Course in North Kingstown, Rhode Island.


 
Women's Rowing Boat of the Week

7404Varsity 8 / Florida Tech / Melbourne, Florida
Florida Tech’s Varsity Eight paced its way to a silver finish against six other V8 crews during the 2018 SIRA Championship A-Final race. The boat worked its way through time trials and semifinals on Saturday, finishing fourth and second, respectively. FIT's semifinal time of 6:50.953 qualified the Crimson and Gray for Sunday morning's race, in which they clocked a 2000-meter course time of 6:45.864 ahead of Kansas State University, the University of Dayton, Barry University, and Purdue University. Over the duration of the weekend, the V8 had to compete against 10 other varsity eight entries from the Division I, II, Lightweight, and Club levels. The poised crew of Taylor Stoni, Natalia Arasa Bonavila, Federica Pala, Theresa Gadilhe, Anna Kayser Gallego, Julie McCarthy, Irina Djurovic, and Svetlana Ristin brought home the hardware for Florida Tech.
