SSC Athletes of the Week | March 26 - April 1, 2018
Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of March 26 - April 1, 2018. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.
Baseball Player of the Week
Connor Crile / University of Tampa / Sr. / OF / Anthony, Florida
Crile is named Player of the Week after leading Tampa to a series sweep over Lynn University. Crile went 6-for-13 across three games while recording six RBIs and nine total bases in the series. His top performance of the week came in the final game against the Fighting Knights, where he went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs. The senior finished the week with a .462/.500/.692 slash line as Tampa moves to 25-5 overall and 14-1 in SSC play.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Devin Conn / Nova Southeastern University / So. / Parkland, Florida
Conn earns his second Pitcher of the Week honor of the year following a nine-strikeout effort against Rollins College. The Parkland, Florida native earned the win after allowing three hits, a walk, and no runs across seven innings of work. He allowed only one of hit through the first five innings and set down nine straight batters until the Tars snapped the streak with two away in the top of the sixth. The Sharks have now won eight straight SSC ball games, and 14-of-17 overall standing at 20-9 overall on the season and 12-3 in SSC play.
Softball Player of the Week
Michaela Hynes / Palm Beach Atlantic University / Sr. / 1B / Windermere, Florida
Hynes earns Player of the Week honors for the second time this season after playing a pivotal role in PBA’s sweep over Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. In three games against Embry-Riddle, Hynes went 5-for-12 with two RBIs and two runs scored. The senior also snagged a bag, while reaching seven total. The Windermere, Florida product had multiple clutch hits throughout the series including an RBI single in the 8th inning of the final game of the series that secured the sweep for the Sailfish. Palm Beach Atlantic is now 25-2 and 18-0 in SSC play and currently own a 22-game win streak.
Softball Pitcher of the Week
Melanie Murphy / Florida Tech / Jr. / Melbourne, Florida
Murphy is named Pitcher of the Week following two complete-game shutouts against Rollins College. Murphy sat down 46 of the 51 batters she faced across a total of 14 innings of work, including eleven by way of strikeout. The Melbourne, Florida native tallied a 0.00 ERA while holding opposing batters to a .130 average. With the pitching of Murphy, the Panthers improve to 23-18 overall and 7-11 in conference play.
Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Lucas Claude / Florida Southern College / Sr. / Attack / Calgary, Alberta
Claude hit the back of the net 14 times for Florida Southern to earn Offensive Player of the Week. Claude’s week started with a nine-goal performance in the Moccasins' non-conference match win over tje University of Alabama-Huntsville, 16-9. Claude also recorded an assist and picked up a pair of ground balls in the win. The nine-goal total against UAH is the second highest at any division of lacrosse this year, and is the second most in school history. The Moccasin senior concluded the week with five more goals to bring his season total to 32 goals as Florida Southern defeated Lynn University, 14-12. The Calgary, Alberta product also picked up three ground balls.
Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Addison Abramson / Florida Tech / Sr. / LSM / Reisterstown, Maryland
Abramson wins Defensive Player of the Week after leading Florida Tech in a win Rollins College. During the Panthers' 14-12 road victory over the Tars, the junior caused five turnovers and picked up eight ground balls. Both totals were season-highs for Abramson as he guided the Panthers to their fourth win in a row and a 2-0 record in SSC play. Abramson now has 23 caused turnovers and 44 ground balls over nine games this season.
Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week
Drydan Brous / Lynn University / So. / FOS / Ocean City, Maryland
Brous set two single-game program records for the Fighting Knights on his way to Specialist of the Week accolades. Against Florida Southern College, Brous had a career night, taking all 30 face-offs in the game for Blue and White. He won 23 and lost seven for a 77% winning percentage, while also picking up 17 ground balls in the game. Brous' 23 face-offs wins are the most ever in a single game from a Fighting Knight. Additionally, Brous' 17 ground balls surpassed the old program record of 15 set during the team's inaugural season. The Ocean City, Maryland product continues to lead the SSC in both face-off percentage (76.6%) and ground balls per game (10.9).
Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Lauren Tybor / Florida Tech / So. / Midfield / Jacksonville, Florida
Tybor broke two program single-game records to lead #5 Florida Tech to a 23-10 victory over Colorado State University - Pueblo on Friday. The sophomore recorded 13 points and ten assists, both program records, to go along with three goals, eight draw controls, a season-high six ground balls to guide the Panthers to their 10th win of the season and 18th consecutive victory over a non-conference opponent. Tybor now sits atop the 2018 NCAA Division II single-game leaders in assists and points.
Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Bridget Sutter / University of Tampa / Fr. / GK / Evergreen, Colorado
Sutter wins Defensive Player of the Week following her performances against Florida Southern College and the Colorado State University-Pueblo. In the Spartans’ one-goal loss to the No. 1 Florida Southern College, the freshman goalie faced 27 shots and recorded 14 saves in 60 minutes. In the Spartans 14-7 win over the CSU-Pueblo, the Evergreen, Colorado native logged six saves on thirteen shots. On the season, Sutter has recorded 111 saves and has earned a goal against average of 8.84.
Women's Golfer of the Week
Sophie Madden / Nova Southeastern University / Jr. / Essex, England
Madden guided No. 1 Nova Southeastern to its sixth consecutive tournament win by collecting her first career individual title at the Barry University Invitational this past week. The junior posted a bogey-free 70 in the final round to hold off teammate Jamie Freedman for the top spot at two-under for the tournament, her fifth straight Top-10 finish. Madden’s 70 came a day after rounds of 70 and 74 to kick-off the week as the Sharks rolled to the eventual 12-shot victory in an event that featured five of the nation's Top-6 programs.
Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Thomas Grinberg / Saint Leo University / Jr. / Vincennes, France
Grinberg defended his top national ranking as he defeated No. 5 Jean-Baptiste Mateo of Lynn University, going 6-0 overall including 3-0 at No. 1 singles and 3-0 with Vincent Suillerot at No. 1 doubles. Grinberg has yet to be defeated in 2018 at No. 1 singles, and he enters the week 15-0. The No. 4 Saint Leo men's tennis team stayed perfect, now 15-0 overall, adding three to the Lions’ season win count as they claimed wins over Florida Tech, Keiser University, and No. 5 Lynn University this past week.
Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Sonja Larsen / Barry University / Sr. / Verden, Germany
Larsen wins Player of the Week after helping Barry go 3-0 with wins over No. 25 Nova Southeastern University, No. 11 Academy of Art University, and No. 15 Florida Southern College. The senior improves to 16-0 in singles and 17-0 in doubles. Larsen, who owns the school's career singles victories record (77), has won 44 straight dual match singles dating back to last season when she went a school-record of 28-0. Larsen is currently ranked No. 2 in singles and No. 14 in doubles alongside Verena Schmid.
