SSC Athletes of the Week | April 9 - 15, 2018

Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of April 9 - 15, 2018. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.


Baseball Player of the Week

8709Luis Olivier / Embry-Riddle / So. / 1B-C / Altamonte Springs, Florida
Olivier is named Player of the Week after a tremendous week at the plate for Embry-Riddle. The Altamonte Springs, Florida product went 8-for-18 across the four games while recording four home runs, nine RBIs, 21 total bases, and at least one hit in each game. Olivier’s top performance of the week came in the series finale against conference opponent Eckerd College. The sophomore went 3-for-6 with three runs, six RBIs, and two home runs. Both of Olivier’s long balls came in the same inning. The sophomore finished the week with a .444/.474/1.167 slash line.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week

8458Logan Browning / Florida Southern College / Lakeland, Florida
Browning earns Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time this season following 11 strikeouts in seven shutout innings against Florida Tech. The Lakeland, Florida native earned the win after holding opponents to a .174 batting average, allowing just four hits and two walks. The senior also batted 4-for-8 in the series driving in three runs. With the play of Browning, the Moccasins have now won ten straight ball games and stand at 32-4 overall on the season and 15-3 in SSC play.
 
Softball Player of the Week

8710Bailey Phillips / University of Tampa / Fr. / OF / Jupiter, Florida
Phillips earns Player of the Week after playing a significant role in the Spartans handing No.4 Palm Beach Atlantic University their first SSC series loss of the season. Phillips finished the three-game series with a .571/.700/1.000 line after recording four hits in seven at-bats including three doubles. The freshman third baseman drew three walks and drove in a pair of runs. In the first game of a Saturday doubleheader, Phillips went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in the two runs that secured the win. The Spartans now sit at 23-15 overall and 14-10 in SSC play.
Softball Pitcher of the Week

Makaleigh Dooley / University of Tampa / Jr. / Tampa, Florida
Dooley was the driving force in the Spartans delivering No.4 Palm Beach Atlantic University its first SSC series loss of the season. The junior ace finished the weekend at 2-1, clinching the series with a pair of complete game wins on Saturday. A native of Tampa, Dooley tossed 19 innings overall finishing the weekend with a 1.84 ERA and a 5.53 strikeouts per seven innings pitched. She struck out 15 batters and walked none over her 19 innings of work. Dooley also recorded 159 pitches in the two wins with 137 going for strikes. The Spartans now sit at 23-15 overall and 14-10 in SSC play.
 
Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

8466Andrew Kew / University of Tampa / Jr. / Attack / Oakville, Ontario
Kew earns his second Offensive Player of the Week award this season after leading Tampa in SSC wins over Rollins College (17-5) and Palm Beach Atlantic University (27-5). The junior from Oakville, Ontario recorded four goals and three assists against the Tars while adding a pair of caused turnovers and a ground ball to his stat sheet. In the win against Palm Beach Atlantic, Kew recorded six goals and three assists as the Spartans cruised to victory. The junior attackman leads the Spartans in both goals and assists this year with 42 and 16, respectively. Tampa now moves to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in SSC play.

Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Daniel Flock / Florida Tech / Jr. / GK / Ellicott City, Maryland
Flock earns Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after an excellent week in goal for the Panthers. Although he faced 18 shots, Flock needed to make just four saves in Wednesday's 17-3 win over Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Flock then made 21 saves while facing a season-high 43 shots in the 15-14 road victory over Florida Southern College on Saturday to help the Panthers earn a school-record eighth consecutive win and move to 6-0 in SSC play. Florida Tech becomes the first team in SSC men’s lacrosse history to win six league games in a regular season. Panthers are now 9-4 overall and 6-0 in SSC play.

 
Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week

Dryden Brous / Lynn / Jr. / FOS / Ocean City, Maryland
Brous earns Specialist of the Week for the fourth time this year after a great week for the Fighting Knights. For the week, Brous took 43 draws, winning 37, for an incredible 86.0 face off winning percentage. He also picked up 32 ground balls, averaging 16.0 per game. Against Palm Beach Atlantic University, Brous went 18-for-19 on face offs while adding a game-high 15 ground balls and his fourth goal of the season. Brous' 15 ground balls are tied for second all-time in school history, falling two shy of his career-best and program record set earlier this season. At No. 6 Saint Leo University, he had another phenomenal day at the face off X, taking all 24 draws in the game and winning 19. He did almost all of the work himself, picking up 17 ground balls. Brous' 17 ground balls tie his own program record set earlier this season against Florida Southern College. His 19 face off wins are four shy of his school record and are tied for fourth-most in a game all-time. For the season, Brous now leads the country in ground balls per game (11.27) and ranks second in the nation in face off winning percentage (78.2).
 
Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

8608Kallie German / Rollins College / Jr. / Midfield / Centreville, Maryland
German is awarded Offensive Player of the Week for the second time after an impressive week for the Tars. The junior earned a new program record for overall points in a game as she scored seven goals and added three assists for a 10-point outing against Saint Leo University on Saturday. German fired off 16 shots and 10 shots on goal, helping the No. 6 Tars defeat the Lions in SSC action. German scored the game-winner against the Lions. Her 10th point of the game came on an assist with 12:53 remaining in the second half, besting the previous record of nine points in a contest held by eight different Tars throughout the program's 11-year history. Rollins now stands at 13-3 overall and 3-2 in SSC play.

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Sam Keesey / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Defender / Bel Air
Keesey is awarded Defensive Player of the Week after recording six draw controls, and two caused turnovers against Saint Leo University as the Moccasins won the game 18-3. The junior managed to log five draw controls in just ten minutes versus Belmont Abbey College Her top game of the week came against Lenoir-Rhyne University as she had nine draw controls, three caused turnovers, and two ground balls. For the week, the junior collected 20 draw controls and caused five turnovers to help the Moccasins go 3-0 during the week. Florida Southern now sits at 16-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
 

Women's Golfer of the Week

8712Michelle Ruiz / Nova Southeastern University / Sr. / Mississauga, Ontario
Ruiz guided the top-ranked Sharks to a third-place finish at last week's Lady Panther Invitational, individually earning a share of second at one-under par for the tournament. The senior was one of just three players to finish the tourney in red numbers, topping the field with a total of 40 pars while recording one of two overall eagles. Entering the SSC Tournament Championship, Ruiz currently ranks as the nation's No. 5 player.
 
Men's Tennis Player of the Week

8463Thomas Grinberg / Saint Leo University / Jr. / Vincennes, France
Grinberg wrapped up the regular season by raising his #1 singles record to 19-0 against Eckerd College and No. 19 Palm Beach Atlantic University. The graduating junior from Vincennes, France blanked his opponent at Eckerd; 6-0, 6-0 on Wednesday. The win helped the Lions clinch the Sunshine State Conference regular-season title. Three days later, Grinberg showcased a 6-2, 6-2 win against Palm Beach Atlantic during his regular-season finale and senior day. In doubles, Grinberg and Vincent Suillerot registered two more wins to a season record of 15-3. The duo took down Eckerd 8-1 and No. 19 Palm Beach Atlantic 8-2. The honor is Grinberg's fourth of the season.
 
Women's Tennis Player of the Week

Klaudia Boczova / Lynn University / Gr. / Nové Zámky, Slovakia
Boczova led the fourth-ranked Fighting Knights to a win in their only match this week, a 7-2 SSC triumph at No. 21 Rollins College. At #1 doubles, Lynn's newly crowned nationally top-ranked doubles squad of Boczova and Eliska Petrackova defeated 17th-ranked Fabiana Vitanza and Alexandra Borg, 9-7. The Slovak continued her strong play at the top singles position, blanking her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Boczova, the seventh-ranked singles player in the country, now has five 6-0, 6-0 victories this season at the top flight. She closes out the regular season undefeated at 20-0 in singles, all at the #1 position, and 19-1 in doubles play, also all at the top spot. The weekly award is Boczova's fifth of the year and sixth of her career.
