SSC Athletes of the Week | February 26 - March 4, 2018
Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of February 26 - March 4, 2018. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.
Baseball Player of the Week
Peyton Isaacson / Saint Leo University / Jr. / 1B-C-P / Galesburg, Illinois
Isaacson repeats as Player of the Week after pacing Saint Leo to a sweep of Barry University, extending their conference record to 6-0 for the first time in the past two decades. Isaacson went 7-for-13 from the box for a .538 average including five runs scored, one double, and three home runs. The Galesburg, Illinois product tallied six RBI and tagged a team-high 17 total bases while finishing the weekend with a 1.308 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage. In the field, he finished with 24 putouts and no errors for a 1.000 fielding percentage before picking up one save to end the series. Isaacson pitched one inning gave up just one hit and struck out two batters with no runs allowed. With the play of Isaacson, the Lions are 13-2 on the season and have won nine consecutive games.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Garrett Leonard / Rollins College / So. / Fort Mill, South Carolina
Leonard earns Pitcher of the Week following a no-hitter against Sunshine State Conference foe Lynn University. The sophomore hurler was in complete control as he tossed nine scoreless innings, striking out five and walking none. Leonard retired 26 of the 29 batters he faced, with the three outliers being hit by a pitch over the course of the ballgame. With the 7-0 victory, the Tars improve to 8-7 overall and 2-1 in the SSC.
Softball Player of the Week
Destiny Carroll / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University / Sr. / 3B / Jacksonville, Florida
Carroll is awarded Player of the Week honors after leading Embry-Riddle to a 5-0 week, including a sweep of No. 8 Saint Leo University. In two games against American International College, Carroll knocked in a run while scoring twice. She finished the two-game set with two hits in five at-bats. Against No. 8 Saint Leo, Carroll compiled a .375 / .444 / .875 slash line as the Eagles took all three games. The Jacksonville, Florida native drove in three runs and scored three times against the Lions. For the week, the third baseman also had eight putouts and 10 fielding assists. Carrol is the first ERAU student-athlete to win this award. The Eagles are now 15-3 overall and 8-1 in SSC play.
Softball Pitcher of the Week
Jayla Jackson / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University / So. / Belleville, Michigan
Jackson is named Pitcher of the Week following her complete games against American International College and No. 8 Saint Leo University. Jackson allowed two hits and let up one run in five innings of work as Embry-Riddle won 12-1 over A.I.C. The Belleville, Michigan native then tossed seven shutout innings against Top-10 Saint Leo. She retired 22 of the 25 batters she faced, allowing two hits and hitting a batter, as the Eagles took a 4-0 victory. For the week, the sophomore had a .75 ERA in 12 innings pitched, allowed four hits, one earned run and struck out six batters. Opponents recorded a slim .103 batting average against her as she becomes first ERAU student-athlete to win this award. The Eagles are now 15-3 overall and 8-1 in SSC play.
Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Nick Howard / Lynn University / Sr. / Midfield / Southington, Connecticut
Howard exploded offensively with nine points behind eight goals and an assist as Lynn University went 2-0 this week. The Fighting Knights defeated Dominican College in their home opener, 14-5, before posting a big, 14-9, win over previously-ranked Wingate University. Howard had a career game against the Chargers, logging a natural hat trick through the halftime before burying two more. He finished with a career-high five goals, hitting the frame on six of his shot attempts. The junior offensive midfielder recorded another hat trick on Saturday and added an assist for a four-point outing in the win over the Bulldogs. He finished the week with 10 shots-on-goal, three ground balls, and a caused turnover. Lynn stands at 3-1 overall on the year.
Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
BJ Borowski / University of Tampa / Fr. / Goalkeeper / Frederick County, Maryland
Borowski takes Defensive Player of the Week accolades after his contributions in Tampa's 15-5 win over the North Greenville University. In 45 minutes of play, the freshman goalie logged nine saves on 12 shots for the Spartans. Borowski netted the win after facing 24 shots and tallying a .750 save percentage. With the play of Borowski, Tampa moves to 5-0 on the season.
Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week
Dryden Brous / Lynn University / So. / M-FOS / Ocean City, Maryland
Brous dominated all over the field as Lynn University went 2-0 this week. The Fighting Knights first defeated Dominican College in their home opener, 14-5, before posting a big, 14-9, win over previously-ranked Wingate University. Brous contributed offensively with two goals and two assists while firing off just two shots. He went 33-of-42 on face-offs for the week for a 78.6% success rate. The sophomore also picked up 25 ground balls. Against the Chargers, Brous tied his career-high with two assists while winning 17-of-19 face-off attempts (89 .5%) to go along with a game-high 11 ground balls. He followed up with the first multi-goal game of his career in the big victory over Wingate, finding the back of the net twice while winning 16-of-23 face-offs and picking up a career-high 13 ground balls. Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Mya Watson / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University / Fr. / Attack / St. Johns, Florida
Watson tallied 14 goals and two assists in just two games to earn Offensive Player of the Week honors. The St. Johns, Florida native scored seven goals and added two assists in a loss to Davenport University on Wednesday. Watson helped her team bounce back by scoring seven more goals and picking up five ground balls on Sunday. Her efforts guided the Eagles to 20-14 win at the University of Montevallo. Watson is the first ERAU student-athlete to win this award. With her efforts, the Eagles move to 4-1 on the year.
Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Erin Davis / Saint Leo University / So. / Goalkeeper / Rehoboth, Delaware
Davis posted a .550 save percentage after 105 minutes of action between Saint Leo's two-game weekend at Belmont Abbey College and Lenior-Rhyne University. Davis recorded five saves while facing 15 shots in SLU's 19-8 win at Belmont Abbey. Two days later, the Rehoboth, Delaware native stopped six shots as the Lions downed Lenoir-Rhyne 18-4 in North Carolina. Davis faced 30 total shots and allowed only nine goals on the week. The two wins raised her and the Lions' season records to 5-0.
Men's Golfer of the Week
Juan Jose Guerra / Nova Southeastern University / Jr. / Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
At the Saint Leo Invitational last Tuesday, Guerra collected his first career win. The junior followed up Monday's pair of 66's with another stellar round of three-under 69 to hold off Lee University's Scott Odell by four shots. In the process, the Dominican Republic native helped lift the third-ranked Sharks to the team title by eight strokes. Guerra currently ranks as the No. 2 player in NCAA Division II.
Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Pierre Montrieul / Barry University / So. / Beaumont, France
Montrieul is awarded Player of the Week honors for the second time in his career after an outstanding week for Barry men's tennis. The Beaumont, France product gained a 5-3 win over No. 4 Columbus State University defeating KP Pannu 6-3, 6-3 in the #1 singles spot. The sophomore and doubles partner Carlos Gomez defeated #2 KP Pannu and Alvaro Regalado 8-6. The Buccaneers held onto a 5-3 win over No. 5 Valdosta State, in which Montrieul defeated Jordi Mas 6-3, 7-6.
Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Sonja Larsen / Barry University / Sr. / Verden, Germany
Larsen earns Player of the Week for the second week in a row after leading Barry to a 5-1 win over No. 3 Columbus State University. The senior defeated No. 3 Beatriz Lopez 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, and with doubles partner Verena Schmid defeated Candice Paya and Luise Sachs of CSU 8-0. In a 5-0 win over Valdosta State University, No. 1 Sonja Larsen defeated Daniella Barta 6-0, 6-1 and beat Sabrina Schmidt and Estee Widdershoven 8-2.
