SSC Athletes of the Week | March 19 - 25, 2018
Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of March 19 - 25, 2018. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.
Baseball Player of the Week
Tom Archer / Lynn University / Jr. / 2B / Fort Salonga, New York
Archer is named Player of the Week after leading Lynn to a series victory at No. 4 Florida Southern College. Archer went 7-for-13 from the leadoff spot including three homers as the Fighting Knights took two of the three games from the Moccasins. The Fort Salonga, New York product tallied nine RBIs and 17 total bases in the series. His top performance of the week was the second game against Florida Southern where he went 4-for-6 with two home runs and eight RBIs. The junior finished the week with a .538/.571/1.308 slash line as Lynn moves to 19-12 overall and 8-7 in SSC play.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Dillon McCollough / Eckerd College / Jr. / Deltona, Florida
McCollough earns his first Pitcher of the Week honor of the year following a 13-strikeout effort against conference opponent Rollins College. The Deltona, Florida native allowed five hits, two walks, and an unearned run across eight innings of work. McCollough also tossed one and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief on Wednesday against No. 10 Saint Leo University. The junior struck out three and walked one batter in the contest. For the week, opponents batted just .176 against the southpaw.
Softball Player of the Week
Katy Thompson / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University / Fr. / C / Cooper City, Florida
Thompson recorded at least one hit in all five of Embry-Riddle’s games this week to garner Player of the Week honors. In two games against Columbus State University, Thompson went 6-for-6 with five RBIs and three runs scored. The freshman also snagged two bags, while reaching seven total, as ERAU won both games. The Cooper City, Florida product then went 6-for-10 in a three-game series against Tampa. Her top performance of the series was a 3-for-4 effort in game one where she provided Embry-Riddle with a run scored and an RBI. For the week, Thompson compiled a .750 / .750 / .875 slash line following 12 hits, six RBIs, four runs, and two stolen bases. With the play of Thompson, the Eagles move to 25-8 overall and 13-5 in league play.
Softball Pitcher of the Week
Allison Mitts / Saint Leo University / Sr. / Belleville, Illinois
Mitts is named Pitcher of the Week following a perfect game against conference opponent Lynn University. Mitts sat down all 21 of the batters she faced across seven innings of work, including eight by way of strikeout. The Belleville, Illinois native then pitched five innings of relief in a loss to the Fighting Knights. Mitts gave up three hits and two earned runs while striking out two batters. In 12 innings pitched, the senior struck out ten batters and held opponents to a .079 batting average.
Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Mason Ostrowski / Florida Tech / Fr. / Attack / Annapolis, Maryland
Ostrowski had a breakout week, recording nine points and five ground balls, for Florida Tech in a pair of Top-10 wins. Ostrowski tallied a goal and two assists to help Florida Tech knock off No. 5 University of Tampa, 7-6, on Wednesday. The victory stands as the first SSC victory for any team over Tampa. The freshman followed up with a six-point outing in an, 11-10, upset over No. 10 University of Mount Olive on Saturday. Ostrowski recorded three goals, three assists, four ground balls, and scored the game-winning goal for Florida Tech with six seconds remaining in regulation. For the week, Ostrowski tallied four goals, five assists, and five ground balls as FIT improves to 4-4 overall.
Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Daniel Flock / Florida Tech / So. / Goalkeeper / Ellicott City, Maryland
Flock had a tremendous week in goal to lead Florida Tech defensively in against a pair of Top-10 teams last week. The junior racked up a season-high 17 saves and a .739 save percentage to help Florida Tech knock off No. 5 University of Tampa, 7-6, on Wednesday. The win is a first for the Panthers over Tampa. Flock followed up with 12 saves and a .545 save percentage in the Panthers', 11-10, upset victory over No. 10 University of Mount Olive on Saturday. For the week, Flock tallied 26 saves and a .644 overall save percentage.
Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week
Ryan Land / Florida Tech / Jr. / FOS / Ellicott City, Maryland
Land won 81% (17-for-21) of his face off attempts last week to help Florida Tech pick up a pair of victories over Top-10 teams. Land dominated the faceoff x in the Panthers' 11-10 upset victory over No. 10 University of Mount Olive on Saturday, as he won 16-for-19 (.842) draws and ended with a game-high seven ground balls. The junior also won a faceoff in the Panthers' 7-6 win over No. 5 University of Tampa, the first victory over Tampa in program history.
Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Hannah Ashton / Rollins College / So. / Midfield / Berwyn, Pennsylvania
Ashton earns Player of the Week honors after leading Rollins offensively across two wins this week. Against No. 6 Limestone College, Ashton led the game in goals with four, firing off five shots, all of which were on target. The Berwyn, Pennsylvania product added two ground balls and two draw controls against the Saints as her game-winning goal helped the Tars earn their second upset win of the season. Ashton once again led the Tars in goals to help Rollins take down Lenoir-Rhyne University by a score of 15-6 on Sunday afternoon, scoring four goals on six shots. Ashton also added one ground ball and notched a new career best in draw controls as she led the game with eight. With Ashton's help, the Tars have now won nine-straight games.
Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Malorie Olin / Rollins College / Sr. / Goalkeeper / Skaneateles, New York
Olin is tabbed Defensive Player of the Week for the seventh time in her career after helping the Tars to an undefeated week. Against No. 6 Limestone College, Olin faced 26 shots (18 on goal) and recorded 11 saves while allowing just seven goals. Olin wrapped up the week helping the Tars make easy work of Lenoir-Rhyne University. In a 15-6 victory, she tallied 12 saves and allowed only six goals as she faced 23 shots (18 on goal). On the week, the Skaneateles, New York native faced 49 shots, earning 23 saves for a .639 save percentage.
Men's Golfer of the Week
Carlos Bustos / Lynn University / So. / Satiago, Chile
Bustos (73-64-65) tied for second out of a field of 114 NCAA Division I golfers and helped Lynn men’s golf to a victory in the FAU Spring Championship. Bustos shot a second round 64, the second-lowest 18-hole score in program history, en route to shooting a 14-under (202), the second-lowest 54-hole total in school history. This was Bustos’ best finish and lowest total in his career. The sophomore led the field with 19 birdies, was tied for the lead in par 3 scoring (2-under) and was second in both par 5 scoring (8-under) and eagles (2). The Fighting Knights posted the lowest 54-hole team total in program history (826) in a 19-stroke victory. This marks the ninth consecutive year Lynn has posted at least one tournament win.
Women's Golfer of the Week
Laila Forstmane / Eckerd College / Fr. / Carnikava, Latvia
Forstmane posted a second-place finish in difficult conditions at the Centre Invitational at Saddlebrook Resort. The Latvian shot 82 in the opening round and shaved five shots off that score with a final-round 77. Forstmane’s second-place finish of 159 is the highest of her career.
Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Jaime Bueno / Saint Leo University / Sr. / Satiago, Chile
Bueno's comeback clinched a 5-4 win for the No. 4 Saint Leo Men's Tennis Lions over No. 1 Barry University on Saturday. Down 4-0 in set three, Bueno and No. 25 Daniel Ventura recovered with six straight points to win the match. The upset captured the program's second win within seven days over a No. 1 ranked opponent. Saint Leo remains undefeated, raising its overall record to 12-0, 2-0 in the SSC. On the week, Bueno went 2-0 in #3 singles. Before his battle with Barry, he earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 50 Washburn University on Thursday.
Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Klaudia Boczova / Lynn University / Gr. / Nové Zámky, Slovakia
Boczova went 4-0 this week in another pair of strong performances to help lift fourth-ranked Lynn University to a 1-1 record. The Fighting Knights first took a tough 5-4 setback to No. 13 Columbus State University before bouncing back with an 8-1 SSC victory on the road at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Against the Cougars, Boczova and Eliska Petrackova started off the day with an 8-5 victory at #1 doubles before 17th-ranked Boczova recorded her biggest singles win of the year so far, breezing past No. 3-ranked Beatriz Lopez in straight sets at the top flight (6-2, 6-1). It was just the second singles loss of the season for Lopez. At ERAU, the doubles duo logged a strong 8-1 triumph at #1 doubles with Boczova cruising again in singles at the #1 position, 6-0, 6-1. Boczova is 14-0 on the year in singles and has yet to drop a set to an opponent. Lynn stands at 12-2 overall, 4-0 in the SSC.
Women's Rowing Boat of the Week
Varsity 4 / Rollins College / Winter Park, Florida
Rollins' Varsity 4 won silver at the John Hunter Regatta at Lake Lanier in Gainesville, Georgia; the site of the 1996 Olympic Rowing events. The boat of Cameron Robinson, Samantha Talucci, Elizabeth Berry, Kelly Farrell, Grace Wamester finished second in a time of 7:40.38 behind winner Clemson by five seconds. The Rollins boat had the second fastest time coming out of heat races. Each member of the Varsity 4 boat came out of the Varsity 8, which raced earlier in the day.
