SSC Athletes of the Week | March 12 - 18, 2018
Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of March 12 - 18, 2018. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.
Baseball Player of the Week
Nick DeTringo / University of Tampa / Jr. / Ruskin, Florida
DeTringo is named Player of the Week after leading Tampa to four wins, including a 3-0 sweep of No. 10 Saint Leo University. The Ruskin, Florida product went 6-for-10 from the box with three doubles in three games against the Lions. DeTringo tallied three RBIs and nine total bases in the series. His top performance of the week was the opener against Saint Leo where he went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. DeTringo also had a hit in three at-bats in Tampa’s victory over the University of Bridgeport. The junior finished the week with a .538/.571/.769 slash line as the Spartans move to 19-5 overall and 8-1 in SSC play.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Keven Pimentel / University of Tampa / Jr. / Huntington Station, New York
Pimentel earns his second Pitcher of the Week honor of the year following seven shutout innings against No. 10 Saint Leo University. The Huntington Station, New York native, retired 21 of the 26 batters he faced, giving up just three hits and two walks. The Junior hurler struck out nine and held opponents to a .125 batting average in the victory. The Spartans have won their last four contests and now sit at 19-5 overall and 8-1 in SSC play.
Softball Player of the Week
Magnolia West / Palm Beach Atlantic University / So. / Carmichael, California
West is awarded Player of the Week honors after leading Palm Beach Atlantic to a 3-0 week, including a three-game series sweep of Lynn University. The Carmichael, California product delivered a three-run homer to clinch the opening game of the series for the Sailfish. West then went 1-for-4 in game two, providing PBA with a RBI and run. She concluded the series with a 3-for-3 performance which included a walk and run scored. For the week, West compiled a .500 / .500 / .800 slash line following five hits, three runs, four RBIs, and a walk. With the play of West, the Sailfish improve to 19-2 overall and 12-0 in league play.
Softball Pitcher of the Week
Nikole Van Gennep / Eckerd College / Jr. / Mokena, Illinois
Van Gennep is named Pitcher of the Week following two complete game victories against No. 9 Saint Leo University. Van Gennep allowed four hits and an earned run in seven innings of work as the Tritons took game one against the Lions. The Mokena, Illinois native then tossed 8.0 innings in the series finale, allowing just one earned run. Van Gennep pitched around seven hits and two walks to record her second victory of the series. In 15 innings pitched, she struck out six batters and held opponents to a .200 batting average. The Tritons are now 12-17 overall and 3-9 against conference teams.
Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Kyle Pauwels / Saint Leo University / Sr. / Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada
Pauwels earns Offensive Player of the Week after playing a significant role for the Lions as they defeated No. 16 Lindenwood University, 17-12. The Kamloops, British Columbia product had a career day for the Lions as he scored seven goals on nine shots and dished out two assists for nine total points in the victory. Nine points in a single game is tied for sixth best in NCAA Division II Men's Lacrosse this year. Pauwels leads the conference with 3.29 goals per game and is third in assists per game with 1.86. Saint Leo is now 6-1 on the year.
Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Mike Greco / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Fort Salonga, New York
Greco takes Defensive Player of the Week honors following his part in Florida Southern's first ever win over a Top-5 opponent. In the Moccasins 12-9 victory over No. 4 Colorado Mesa University, Greco made 17 saves while facing 26 shots on goal for a 65.4 save percentage. The Fort Salonga, New York native, made seven saves in the final quarter, including a key save with under two and half minutes remaining right after Florida Southern scored its last goal of the game. With the play of Greco, FSC improves 4-3 overall.
Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week
Dryden Brous / Lynn University / So. / Ocean City, Maryland
Brous had a strong week for Lynn at the faceoff X as Lynn posted wins over Westminster College and No. 10 Belmont Abbey College. In a 14-9 over Westminster, Brous went 17-for-21 in faceoffs with a career-high-tying 13 ground balls and an assist. He then went 14-for-21 on faceoffs and led all players on the field with 12 ground balls in a 10-9 upset at Belmont Abbey. For the week, Brous won 31-of-42 faceoffs (74%) and picked up a team-high 25 ground balls. Lynn improves to 7-1, its best start to a season in program history.
Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Kallie German / Rollins College / Jr. / Centreville, Maryland
German earns Player of the Week honors after helping the Tars go 3-0 on the week. German opened the week by scoring eight goals and adding an assist against No. 25 Lock Haven University. Eight goals is a new career high for German and matches a program-best for goals and points in a game. German scored on 4-of-5 free position shots, lifting her into first in program record books for career free position goals scored as the Tars' won, 16-9. German then led the team in overall points with eight, scoring five goals and dishing out three assists as the Tars defeated Young Harris College, 20-14. In the Tars' final game of the week, a 19-12 win over the University of Alabama-Huntsville, German once again led the team in scoring with seven goals and adding an assist for a total of eight points. For the week, German tallied 20 goals, five assists, two game-winning goals, while adding five ground balls, six draw controls, and five caused turnovers.
Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Sam Schiano / Florida Tech / Jr. / Perry Hall, Maryland
Schiano earns Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this year after recording 13 ground balls, ten draw controls, eight caused turnovers, eight goals, and two assists in two games this week. The junior tallied five ground balls, three draws, and two caused turnovers to go along with five goals and an assist as the Panthers defeated No. 23 McKendree University, 19-7, on Tuesday. In FIT's 16-5 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne University on Friday, Schiano recorded game-highs with eight ground balls, seven draw controls, and six caused turnovers. The Perry Hall, Maryland native also scored three goals and had an assist as the Panthers improve to 9-0 on the season.
Men's Golfer of the Week
John VanDerLaan / Florida Southern College / Sr. / Southbury, Connecticut
VanDerLaan finished the Southeastern Collegiate in Valdosta, Georgia tied for first with the University of West Florida's Chandler Blanchet. Each golfer shot a six-under-par 210, with VanDerLaan recording rounds of 70, 68, and 72, beating Blanchet in the second and third rounds to erase a six-stroke deficit after the first. VanDerLaan, who tied for the tournament lead with 14 birdies, eventually finished second in a playoff that took eight holes to decide. As a team, the second-ranked Moccasins tied for fifth place with an 875 in a tournament where all of the nation's Top-10 Division II teams were competing.
Women's Golfer of the Week
Sehar Atwal / Rollins College / So. / Delhi, India
Atwal finished tied for first at the Christian Brothers Buccaneer Spring Classic this week. The Delhi, India native won medalist honors in a scorecard playoff. Atwal shot rounds of 77-78-74 for a 13-over score of 229. The sophomore led Rollins to the team championship (307-313-302/922 +58), posting a three-shot win over Saint Leo University.
Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Jaime Bueno / Saint Leo University / Sr. / Satiago, Chile
Bueno generated a 7-0 record during a 4-0 match work week for No. 7 Saint Leo. The Chilean earned a 4-0 #2 doubles mark with partner Willem van den Akker while producing a No. 3 singles record of 3-0. The pair pulled off wins over Wayne State University (8-6), No. 22 Auburn University at Montgomery (8-4), No. 1 the University of West Florida (8-2), and Georgia College (8-5). Filling the Lions’ #4 singles slot, Bueno handed in wins against Wayne State (6-0, 6-1), No. 22 Auburn Montgomery (6-1, 6-2) and No. 1 West Florida (6-3, 7-5). On Sunday, Saint Leo and Georgia College agreed to a “clinch” match, Bueno’s match was left unfinished as the Lions quickly topped the Bobcats 5-1. With the play of Bueno, Saint Leo improves to 10-0 overall.
Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Ana Navas / Nova Southeastern University / Jr. / Valencia, Spain
Navas finished unbeaten over the weekend as the Sharks upset No. 15 Florida Southern College and took down Eckerd College to improve to 3-2 in SSC play. Teamed with Isabella Lowrey in doubles, Navas picked up a huge 8-5 win at No. 2 over Florida Southern’s Magda Stepnik and Nina Schwab. The pair then claimed an 8-1 victory against Joyce Fields and Taylor Selby of Eckerd for their fourth straight win. Playing in the top-flight in singles, the product of Valencia, Spain picked up another clutch 6-4, 6-0 win against FSC’s Lorena Rionda and took down Selby, 6-0, 6-2. With the pair of wins, Navas remains unbeaten, 9-0, against Division II opponents.
Women's Rowing Boat of the Week
Varsity 8 / Florida Tech / Melbourne, Florida
The reigning 2017 SSC Champion Varsity 8 crew clocked in for a second place finish behind Division I Columbia University, who completed the 2000-meter course with a first-place time of 6:42.20. The Panthers shell of coxswain Taylor Stoni, Natalia Arasa Bonavila, Federica Pala, Julie McCarthy, Anna Kayser Gallego, Svetlana Ristin, Irina Djurovic, Theresa Gadilhe, and Graysen Pensch managed to hold a 0:18.95 second split over conference foe, Barry University. Starting off with an average of 35-36 strokes per minute, Florida Tech suffered a malfunction as the oar came entirely out of the lock, falling two-thirds length behind the Buccaneers. Luckily, Florida Tech managed to snap the oar in place to slowly regain seats back on Barry at 35 strokes per minute. As the race headed into the 1500-meter mark, the Panthers recovered a half a length on Barry and edged the Buccaneers during the last 500 meters to finish in second place with a course time of 6:53.42.
