SSC Athletes of the Week | March 5 - 11, 2018
Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of March 5 - 11, 2018. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.
Baseball Player of the Week
Bryce Peterson / Rollins College / Sr. / Outfielder / Enumclaw, Washington
Peterson is named Player of the Week after piloting Rollins to a 5-0 week from the plate. Peterson went 10-for-19 from the box for a .526 average including five runs scored, four doubles, two triples, and two home runs. The Enumclaw, Washington product tallied 12 RBIs and tagged a team-high 24 total bases while finishing the weekend with a 1.263 slugging percentage and a .591 on-base percentage. His top game of the week was a 4-for-4 effort against Concordia University in which he knocked in four runs off two doubles and a triple. With the play of Peterson, the Tars move to 13-7 overall.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
J.J. Niekro / Florida Southern College / So. / Plant City, Florida
Niekro earns Pitcher of the Week following a six-inning shutout against No. 19 Mount Olive University. The sophomore hurler tossed six scoreless innings, striking out seven and walking two. The Plant City, Florida native, retired 20 of the 22 batters he faced, giving up just two hits for an opponent batting average of .100. The game was called a tie after the seventh inning due to an injury suffered by the home plate umpire.
Softball Player of the Week
Amanda James / Saint Leo University / So. / INF / Saint Charles, Illinois
James is awarded Player of the Week honors after leading Saint Leo to a 6-1 week, including a three-game series victory against conference opponent Nova Southeastern University. The St. Charles, Illinois product kicked off the week with back-to-back 2-for-2 performances against Cedarville University and Ashland University, in which she also drove in two runs and scored at least once in both games. In a two-game set against Tiffin University, James scored twice while going 3-for-4 from the plate. During a three-game series against Nova Southeastern, the sophomore was 3-for-7 at the plate and drove in one run. For the week, James compiled a .667 / .700 / 1.133 slash line following 10 hits, five runs, five RBI, five extra-base hits, and three walks helping the Lions improve to 20-7 overall and 6-6 in SSC play.
Softball Pitcher of the Week
Makaleigh Dooley / University of Tampa / So. / Tampa, Florida
Dooley is named Pitcher of the Week following seven appearances, five wins, and four complete games. Dooley allowed three total hits and let up no runs in nine innings of work over a two-game series sweep against Southwest Minnesota State University. The Tampa, Florida native appeared in all three games of the conference series versus Lynn University, where she pitched a total of 16.2 innings giving up just five hits and allowing zero runs. For the week, the junior had a 0.00 ERA in 36.2 innings pitched, allowed thirteen hits, no earned runs, and struck out 41 batters. Opponents recorded a slim .107 batting average against Dooley as the Spartans move to 16-10 overall and 7-5 in SSC play.
Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Jake Gilmour / Saint Leo University / Sr. / Attack / Ontario, Canada
Gilmour played a significant role for the Lions as they defeated Queens University, 13-7, on the road this week. The Ontario, Canada product carried the load offensively for the Lions as he scored three goals on six shots and dished out an assist in the victory. Gilmour leads the conference with 2.83 goals per game and 2.17 assists per game. Saint Leo is now 5-1 on the year.
Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Thomas Tatarian / Saint Leo University / Jr. / Goalkeeper / Shoreham, New York
Tartarian takes Defensive Player of the Week accolades following his performance in Saint Leo's 13-7 road win over Queens University. The junior netted the win after facing 43 shots and allowing only seven goals. Tartarian tallied a .708 save percentage after recording 17 saves as Saint Leo moves to 5-1 on the year.
Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week
Ross Dickerson / University of Tampa / So. / Midfield / Berlin, Maryland
Dickerson is named Specialist of the Week based on his performances against Westminster College and No. 8 Colorado Mesa University. Dickerson won eight of his nine faceoffs and scooped up five ground balls in the Spartans’ 19-9 victory over Westminster in Salt Lake City, winning by a score of 19-9. In a 10-9 road loss against No. 8 Colorado Mesa, he won 18-of-24 faceoffs while grabbing 11 ground balls. For the week he won 26-of-35 faceoffs for a 74.2% success rate. The sophomore also picked up 16 total ground balls. Dickerson currently ranks second in the conference in faceoff percentage (.762) as well as ground balls per game (7.0).
Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Meghan O'Brien / Florida Southern College / Sr. / Attack / Rochester, New York
O'Brien tallied nine goals and eight assists in three games to earn Offensive Player of the Week honors. The Rochester, New York native scored one goal and dished out four assists in a 23-10 win against Young Harris College. The senior had an explosive offensive game against No. 10 Queens University as she scored four goals and dished out an assist in a 15-6 FSC victory. In the final game of the week, O'Brien scored four goals and added three assists as the Moccasins defeated No. 9 Mercy College, 19-12. With the play of O'Brien, Florida Southern moves to 8-0 on the season and remains the No. 1 team in the country.
Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Malorie Olin / Rollins College / Sr. / Goalie / Skaneateles, New York
Olin's efforts in the Tars' 15-4 upset of No. 10 Queens University and 14-8 win over Seton Hill University earned her Defensive Player of the Week honors. Against the nationally-ranked Royals, Olin faced 15 shots and ten shots on goal, making six key saves and causing one turnover while allowing just four shots to find the back of the net. Wrapping up the week against Seton Hill, Olin earned three ground balls while facing 19 shots and 16 shots on goal from the Griffins. On the week, Olin faced 34 total shots, allowing just 12 goals, she posted up a save percentage of .538 with 14 key saves.
Men's Golfer of the Week
John VanDerLaan / Florida Southern College / Sr. / Southbury, Connecticut
VanDerLaan won the Panther Invitational for the second year in a row, setting a tournament record with his score of nine-under 207. That gave him a two-shot win over teammate John Coultas as they finished 1-2 for the third time in their careers. It was VanDerLaan's third win of the season and the seventh tournament title of his career. VanDerLaan had rounds of 70, 67, and 70 and was one of only two golfers in the field of 68 with three under-par rounds. His play helped 2nd-ranked Florida Southern win the tournament by 15 shots over 6th-ranked Barry with the best team score in the tournament's history as well. It was the Moccasins' largest margin of victory since winning the 2001 SSC Tournament by 17 shots over Rollins College.
Women's Golfer of the Week
Jenny Ayala / Lynn University / Sr. / Bogotá, Colombia
Ayala tied for second at the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational while helping the team set records in the process. Ayala shot a 68 in the final round, becoming the seventh golfer in program history to shoot a 68. Her 212 is the second-lowest individual 54-hole score in program history and a career-best. Additionally, Ayala helped Lynn record an 18-hole program record and Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational record 283 in the final round. Lynn's 283 led to an 874 54-hole total, which is also a school record. Ayala's runner-up finish was the second of the year for her and fourth of her career. As a team, Lynn finished third overall.
Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Guillermo De Nicolas-Ruiz / Rollins College / Jr. / Villanueva de la Canada, Spain
De Nicolas-Ruis earns Athlete of the Week honors following his play in three Rollins matches this week. The Spaniard went 3-0 in both singles and doubles play while upsetting two Top-20 teams in doubles. At No. 2 singles, he posted wins over No. 25 Concordia University’s Henry Masters [6-1, 6-0], Wayne State University's Taylor Vane [6-3, 6-7(4), 6-2], and No. 19 Hawaii Pacific University’s Benjamin Loccisano [7-5, 7-6(2)]. De Nicolas-Ruiz posted No. 1 doubles wins with teammate Nicolo De Fraia against all three schools which include the No. 8 (Concordia’s Avangelisti/Chevalier) and No. 20 (Hawaii Pacific’s Gayte/Loccisano) doubles teams in the country.
Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Klaudia Boczova / Lynn University / Gr. / Nové Zámky, Slovakia
Boczova won all six of her matches at the top singles and doubles flights this week as Lynn women’s tennis went 3-0, including a win over the No. 1-ranked team in the NAIA. The top-ranked Fighting Knights first breezed through Hillsdale College at home before heading to the GGC Grizzly Spring Break Invitational where they picked up a neutral 7-2 victory over North Georgia before taking down host and NAIA top-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College, 5-3. Boczova and Diana Bogolii won their first two doubles matches 8-1 before playing with Eliska Petrackova against the Grizzlies’ second-ranked tandem for an 8-5 triumph. In singles, Boczova did not drop a set, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Hillsdale, 6-2, 6-1 vs. North Georgia and 6-3, 6-4 over the third-ranked singles player in the NAIA against GGC. With the play of Boczova, the Fighting Knights improve to 8-1.
Women's Rowing Boat of the Week
Varsity 8 / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University / Daytona Beach, Florida
At the University of South Florida on Saturday, Embry-Riddle's Varsity 8 boat won by nearly 25 seconds, finishing in 6:49.9, while USF's boat posted a time of 7:14.05. It marks the first win in Eagles program history. ERAU’s Varsity 8 is composed of Kathryn Chilelli, Lauren Stollenwerk, Jordan Pfile, Megan Swam, Diana Perera, Athena Padgiotis, Kaya Treder, Rachel Hemsworth, and Madeline Casper.
