SSC Athletes of the Week | January 29 - February 4, 2018

Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of January 29 - February 4, 2018. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.


Men's Basketball Player of the Week

8408Jonathan Lawton / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Guard / Williamstown, New Jersey
Lawton grabs Player of the Week honors after playing a crucial role for Florida Southern as they went 2-0 last week against Eckerd College and Barry University. During a 100-96 overtime win against Eckerd, Lawton scored 33 points and tallied six assists on 7-14 shooting while also knocking down 14 free throws. In that game, Lawton reached the 1,000 career points mark. The Williamstown, New Jersey native then tallied 31 points, eight rebounds and three steals in a 109-100 overtime upset of No. 25 Barry. For the week, Lawton scored 64 points by shooting 45% from the field (14-31), 41% from three (9-22), and 79% from the free throw line (22-34). In 83 minutes on the court, the junior guard recorded 13 rebounds, 11 assists, and five steals. With the play of Lawton, the Moccasins move to 14-9 overall and 8-7 in conference play.

Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

8331Ja'Kwan Jones / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Forward / Newburgh, New York
Jones is awarded Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season as he grabbed 11 defensive rebounds, recorded seven blocks, and tallied three steals while the Moccasins went 2-0 this week. In a 100-96 overtime win against Eckerd College, Jones  five defensive rebounds, three blocks, and a steal. The Newburgh, New York native then tallied six defensive rebounds, two steals, and four blocks in a 109-100 overtime victory against No. 25 Barry University. The junior also provided plenty of offense for the Moccasins as he averaged 18 points along with six rebounds during last week's games.
 


Women's Basketball Player of the Week

7279Camille Giardina / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Guard / Sarasota, Florida
Giardina earns Player of the Week honors after leading the Florida Southern in a pair of conference victories this week. The junior guard opened with a career-high 34 points in an 85-78 double-overtime thriller against Eckerd College. Against Barry University, the Sarasota native put up 19 points in a 77-60 win. Her 19 points move her to 17th in program history in scoring with a total of 1,081 points. For the week, Giardina scored 53 points by shooting 59% from the field (20-of-34), 47% from beyond the arc (7-15), and 75% from the free throw line (6-8). In 88 minutes of action, Giardina tallied seven rebounds, six steals, and two assists. Following the wins, Florida Southern moves to 18-3 overall with a 13-2 conference record.

Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

8222Anja Fuchs-Robetin / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Forward / Vienna, Austria
Fuchs-Robetin gets her fifth Defensive Player of the Week award of her career following FSC's wins over Barry University and Eckerd College. The junior grabbed eight defensive rebounds and came away with two steals and two blocked shots in an 85-78 double-overtime victory against Eckerd. The Moccasins then defeated Barry 77-60, holding the Buccaneers to 10 points below their season scoring average. The Vienna, Austria product recorded two steals and four defensive rebounds to go along with her eleven points in the victory.
 


Men's Swimmer of the Week

8407Arron Nestor / Rollins College / Sr. / Galway, Ireland
Nestor claims Player of the Week after winning two events this past weekend to lead Rollins in a win over Florida Tech. The Galway, Ireland native took the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:25.66 then claimed victory in the 500-yard freestyle with a time 5:02.23. Nestor also swam a leg in the 200-yard medley relay in which he and his teammates placed fourth.


Women's Swimmer of the Week

8416Catalina Berraud-Galea / Lynn University / Jr. / La Pampa, Argentina
Berraud-Galea claimed two individual first-place finishes while also swimming a season-best time of 10:31.58. The La Pampa, Argentina native also took first in the 500 free with a time of 5:10.30. Berraud-Galea’s two first-place finishes helped Lynn sweep the season series against both Rollins and Florida Tech.


 


Baseball Player of the Week

8417Andrew Labosky / Nova Southeastern University / So. / INF / Coral Springs, Florida
Labosky hit .619 during NSU’s four-game opening weekend, which included two matchups against No. 15 Catawba College and one against top-ranked Delta State University. The Coral Springs, Florida product recorded a hit in each game he played, including two five-hit performances. His top game of the weekend was a two HR (including a grand slam) and seven RBI effort against Catawba to finish up the weekend. Altogether, the sophomore charted eight runs, 10 RBI, two home runs, six extra-base hits, and two walks from the leadoff spot. Labosky’s final slash line for the opening weekend was .619 / .652 / 1.143.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week

8420Devin Conn / Nova Southeastern University / So. / Parkland, Florida
Conn receives the first SSC Pitcher of the Week honor for 2018 after tossing seven scoreless innings vs. No. 15 Catawba College in Thursday's season opener. Conn struck out 13 batters while allowing just five hits (all singles), a walk, and no runs. The Parkland, Florida native earned the win as the Sharks took an 8-5 victory. The 13 strikeouts were the most by any NSU player since World Series Champion Mike Fiers did so back on March 28, 2009.
 
 
Softball Player of the Week

8413Kacie Kelly / Saint Leo University / So. / 2B / Jacksonville, Florida
Kelly led Saint Leo to a 5-1 record including a 5-4 win in eight innings against No. 3 The University of West Florida. In the win over the Argonauts, Kelly went 1-for-3 while scoring two runs with one double and two walks. The sophomore would go on to pick up 10 more hits in the Lions last four games with four more doubles to finish opening weekend with 12 hits in 23 at-bats with five doubles, eight RBI, and nine runs scored. In the field, Kelly tallied 15 putouts with nine assists and just one error in six games of play for a .960 fielding percentage. The Jacksonville, Florida native went 3-for-4 on the base path with a .522 batting average, .739 slugging percentage and a .577 on-base percentage.
 
Softball Pitcher of the Week

Alison Mitts / Saint Leo University / Sr. / Belleville, Illinois
Mitts pitched 14.1 innings on the weekend with 16 strikeouts and allowed just three runs to earn Pitcher of the Week honors. Mitts finished off Delta State University with two innings of work, allowing no hits and no runs with six strikeouts. Getting the nod against the University of North Alabama, Mitts pitched the complete seven innings allowing four hits and two runs while striking out another six batters to earn the win. The Belleville, Illinois native got the start in the final game of the weekend against the University of West Alabama and pitched 5.1 innings allowing six hits with four strikeouts and just one run. While on the mound, Mitts saw the Lions outscore opponents 20-6 and went 2-0 with a 1.47 ERA. In three appearances, the senior held opponents batting averages to a .204.

Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

7581Jake Gilmour / Saint Leo University / Sr. / Attack / Pickering, Ontario
Gilmour jump-started Saint Leo at the University of Alabama-Huntsville by scoring three goals in a five-minute span during the first quarter in Saturday’s season opener. The senior attacker continued to impact the game, earning seven points from his three goals and four assists. The Lions sealed an 18-10 final, posting a 1-0 season start.



Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Andrew Hoemann / Rollins College / Sr. / Goalkeeper / Bellingham, Washington
Hoemann opened the season facing the No. 9/10 team in the nation, Belmont Abbey College. The Bellingham, Washington native held the Crusaders off the board in both the first and fourth quarters, helping the Tars to tie the score at 7-7 in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime. Hoemann came up big in the first OT period with a save to keep Belmont Abbey at bay, but the Crusaders were able to secure the victory with 1:05 remaining in the second overtime period to earn the win. Hoemann posted up a career-high 12 saves while allowing only eight goals in 66:55 minutes of action.

Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week

8411Ross Dickerson / University of Tampa / So. / Midfield / Berlin, Maryland
Dickerson was selected as the Men’s Lacrosse Specialist Player of the Week after he won 14-of-16 faceoffs the Spartan’s season opener. In a 19-7 victory over Tusculum College, the Berlin, Maryland native also registered 10 ground balls and scored a goal for the No. 6 Spartans.


 
 

Women's Golfer of the Week

Amanda Gartrell / Florida Southern College / So. / Lakeland, Florida
Gartrell tied for third in Florida Southern's first tournament of the spring by shooting a nine-over par 153 in wet and windy conditions both days. She had a 79 in round one and a 74 in round two to lead the Moccasins to the team title at the Barton College Invitational. The Moccasins finished three shots ahead of second-place Wingate with a 619 (313-306).

 
 
Men's Tennis Player of the Week

Kay Bartmann / Lynn University / Jr. / Stuttgart, Germany
Bartmann helped Lynn University’s men’s tennis team get off to a 2-0 start in the 2018 season with a 4-0 record this week. The Fighting Knights, ranked No. 6, first took down St. Thomas University in the season opener, 9-0, before taking care of business in a top-15 battle with a 7-2 win over No. 11 Flagler College. Bartmann won all four of his matches this week, starting with an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles and a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles vs. St. Thomas. Against Flagler, Bartmann and partner Jose Porfirio Ordonez posted another strong win at No. 2 doubles, 8-5. His best outing of the week was at No. 1 singles against the Saints as 25th-ranked Bartmann dominated 38th-ranked Lukas Storck, 6-1, 6-0.

Women's Tennis Player of the Week

Klaudia Boczova / Lynn University / Gr. / Nové Zámky, Slovakia
Boczova is already making her return to the Sunshine State Conference apparent as the first year Fighting Knight won all six of her matches this week to lead Lynn’s top-ranked women’s tennis team to a 2-1 start to the 2018 season. Lynn first opened up the season with a rout over St. Thomas University, 9-0, before falling to Division I Stetson University, 7-2. The Fighting Knights bounced back with an impressive 7-2 triumph over No. 6 Flagler College on Sunday. Playing at No. 1 doubles with Diana Bogolii, the pair dropped just five games in three wins all week. In their first ever match ever match as a pairing, the squad downed St. Thomas, 8-1, before beating Stetson 8-3 and closing out the week by blanking the Saints, 8-0. Boczova was nearly perfect in singles play, winning all three matches at the top flight either 6-0, 6-1 or 6-1, 6-0, which included a rout over Flagler’s 25th-ranked Lizanne Jinkertz.
