SSC Athletes of the Week | February 5 - 11, 2018

Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of February 5 - 11, 2018. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.


Men's Basketball Player of the Week

7365Elvar Fridriksson / Barry University / Sr. / Guard / Njardvik, Iceland
Fridriksson grabs Player of the Week honors after playing a crucial role for Barry as they grabbed wins last week against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Saint Leo University. During an 89-73 win against Embry-Riddle, the Njardvik, Iceland native recorded a double-double by scoring 25 points and dishing out 10 assists. Fridriksson also came up with four steals and two rebounds in the victory. The senior then tallied 24 points, six assists, and six rebounds in an 88-75 win over Saint Leo. For the week, Fridriksson scored 49 points by shooting 48% from the field (16-33), 47% from three (9-19), and 100% from the free throw line (8-8). In 68 minutes on the court, the senior recorded 16 assists, eight rebounds, and four steals. With the play of Fridriksson, Barry moves to 11-5 in league play and is back on top the SSC standings.

Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

8429Dwayne Gibson / Nova Southeastern University / Jr. / Guard-Forward / Carmel, Indiana
Gibson is awarded Defensive Player of the Week after his performances against Saint Leo University and Eckerd College. In a 91-77 win against Saint Leo, Gibson recorded one block and three steals while also grabbing eight defensive rebounds for the Sharks. The Carmel, Indiana native added another block to go along with one steal and five defensive rebounds in a 73-68 win against Eckerd. The junior also provided plenty of offense for the Sharks including a 26-point outburst against Eckerd. He averaged 19.5 points along with 7.5 rebounds during last week's games.
 


Women's Basketball Player of the Week

8432Nikira Hooks / Saint Leo University / Sr. / Forward / New Britain, Connecticut
Hooks led the Lions to a 2-0 week and help extend Saint Leo’s win streak to three-games. The New Britain, Connecticut product tallied 42 points including a career-high 25 points against Nova Southeastern University on Wednesday. In the 55-52 midweek win over Nova Southeastern, Hooks went 7-14 on the floor, 2-4 in three-pointers, 9-10 on the free throw line scoring her career-high 25-points. Also, she added eight rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block to her big day. In Saturday’s 68-61 win over Barry University, Hooks earned a double-double with 17 points and ten rebounds. She went 5-12 on the floor, 2-5 in three-pointers, and 5-6 from the line leading Saint Leo’s scoring with 17 points. She added four assists and two steals in the victory. For the week, the senior forward scored a total of 42 points by shooting 46% from the field (12-26), 44% from 3(4-9) and 88% from the free throw line (14-16). For the week she grabbed a total of 18 rebounds while racking up five assists, a block and three steals.

Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

8222Anja Fuchs-Robetin / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Forward / Vienna, Austria
Fuchs-Robetin receives her sixth Defensive Player of the Week award of her career and second consecutive following a pair of Florida Southern wins last week. The junior posted a double-double against Rollins College, grabbing 12 rebounds (10 defensive) and scoring 13 points. Fuchs-Robetin also came away with a steal and a block in a 78-69 victory against the Tars. The Vienna, Austria helped hold Florida Tech to 13 points below their season scoring average in a 58-50 FSC win. She recorded two blocks and five defensive rebounds to go along with her nine points in the victory.
 


Baseball Player of the Week

8431Riley Herold / Palm Beach Atlantic University / Jr. / Shortstop / Omaha, Nebraska
Herold hit .727 during PBA's four-game opening weekend, which included three matchups against No. 18 Catawba College and one vs. North Greenville University. The Omaha, Nebraska product recorded two hits in three at-bats against North Greenville driving in two runs. Herold hit two home runs Friday against Catawba, including a game-winning three-run homer with two strikes and two outs in the 9th inning. His top game of the weekend was a 4-for-5, five RBI effort against Catawba. Altogether, the Sailfish shortstop went 8-for-11 at the plate with 10 RBI, five runs scored, and three walks while slashing .727/.750/1.364 for the week.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week

8439Keven Pimentel / University of Tampa / Jr. / Huntington Station, New York
Pimentel receives the SSC Pitcher of the Week honor for the first time in his career after tossing six innings during the rubber game against No. 16 Georgia College. The junior was in complete control, allowing five hits and giving up just one run while walking no batters. The Huntington Station, New York native earned the win as Tampa took an 11-1 victory.


 
Softball Player of the Week

8438Shannon Bell / Florida Southern College / Sr. / Outfielder / Plant City, Florida
Bell takes home SSC Softball Player of the Week after leading Florida Southern's offense on a four-game trip to South Carolina. The Plant City, Florida native hit .462 and slugged .923, while also producing a team-high five RBI. Bell ended the trip with a four-hit game in a 5-0 win over University of South Carolina - Aiken in which she drove in two of the five runs. The senior had another two RBIs in FSC's 6-3 win over Francis Marion University. In each of those two games, Bell put Florida Southern ahead with the first runs of the game on home runs, a two-run shot against Francis Marion and a solo homer against USC Aiken.
 
Softball Pitcher of the Week

Lexie Storrer / Nova Southeastern University / So. / Olathe, Kansas
Storrer pitched 20 innings on the weekend with nine strikeouts and tallied a perfect game to win Pitcher of the Week honors. In a 1-0 victory over Pittsburg State University, Storrer tossed her first-collegiate perfect game, striking out two as NSU took a 1-0 victory. This was the first perfect game recorded by a Shark since February 23, 2010, by Dani Caron. The Olathe, Kansas native pitched two complete games this week and only walked three batters. Through her four appearances on the weekend, her opponents batted .227. She is currently sitting with a 2.48 ERA on the season.

Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

8434Kyle Pauwels / Saint Leo University / Sr. / Attack / Kamloops, British Columbia
Pauwels racked up nine points from three goals off five shots and six assists in Saint Leo’s 20-6 win over Lincoln Memorial University. Four of Pauwels' six assists came in the opening six minutes of action. The Kamloops, British Columbia native picked up three ground balls in the victory while only turning the ball over once.




Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Thomas Tatarian / Saint Leo University / Jr. / Goalkeeper / Shoreham, New York
Tatarian led the Saint Leo defense in a 20-6 win over Lincoln Memorial University on Saturday. In 60 minutes of action, Tatarian faced 44 shots, 24 on goal. The Shoreham, New York tallied 18 saves while allowing six goals for a .750 save percentage.





Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week

8430Ian Heggblod / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University / Fr. / Midfield / Saint Augustine, Florida
Heggblod was selected as the Men’s Lacrosse Specialist Player of the Week after he won 11-of-13 faceoffs in Embry-Riddle’s 12-3 loss to Chowan University. The Saint Augustine, Florida native also registered four ground balls in the Eagles’ first-ever game.


 

Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

8441Lauren Tybor / Florida Tech / So. / Midfield / Jacksonville, Florida
Tybor had a career game to lead No. 6 Florida Tech to a dominant 22-7 season-opening victory over No. 17 Molloy College on Friday. The sophomore paced the Panthers with a career-high eight points on a career-best six goals and one assist. Tybor also gathered a game-high seven draw controls to go along with five ground balls and two caused turnovers.


Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Bridget Sutter / University of Tampa / Fr. / Goalkeeper / Evergreen, Colorado
Sutter is awarded Defensive Player of the Week after her performance in the upset against the No. 11 Rollins Tars. Sutter made her college debut starting for the Spartans and playing the entire 60 minutes against a ranked opponent. The Tars shot at Sutter 17 times, and the freshman recorded 11 saves, only giving up six goals to Rollins. The Colorado native starts her college career with a 64.7 saving percentage.

 

Men's Golfer of the Week

Max O'Hagan / Florida Tech / So. / Surrey, England
O'Hagan had a strong outing in Florida Tech's opening tournament of the spring, the Titan Winter Invitational at Suntree Country Club. The sophomore carded a five-under 139 (72-67) on the first day to sit in second place after two rounds. O'Hagan then shot a 75 on round three to finish the tournament at two-under 214 and in a tie for third place.


 
Women's Golfer of the Week

Noelle Beijer / Florida Tech / Fr. / Assendelft, Netherlands
Beijer was impressive in Florida Tech's opening tournament of the spring as the freshman won the World Golf Invitational last week. Beijer posted a strong first round at World Golf Village's Slammer & Squire course, shooting a 1-under 71 to sit in second place heading into the final day. The Assendelft, Netherlands native then tied a tournament record with a 4-under 68 in the second round to win the tournament championship. The freshman tallied 12 pars and five birdies in the final round and finished with a score of 5-under 139 for the two rounds.

Men's Tennis Player of the Week

Kay Bartmann / Lynn University / Jr. / Stuttgart, Germany
Bartmann posted four victories this week as the Fighting Knights went 2-0 and held a 2-1 lead over No. 1 the University of West Florida before weather halted the match. Lynn’s sixth-ranked men’s tennis team first got past Keiser University, 5-4, before posting a 5-4 upset on the road at No. 4 Valdosta State University. Against Keiser, Bartmann logged an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles, before suffering his only loss of the week, falling to fifth-ranked Vicente Lagos at the top flight. At VSU, Bartmann and partner Jose Porfirio Ordonez won again at No. 2 doubles, 8-3. The Stuttgart, Germany native then secured a big upset in singles, taking down 14th-ranked Jordi Mas at the No. 1 spot, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. Against UWF, Bartmann and Porfirio Ordonez won again at No. 2 doubles, 8-3, but did not get a chance to compete in singles. Bartmann’s efforts have helped Lynn start off the season 4-0.
 
Women's Tennis Player of the Week

Sonja Larsen / Barry University / Sr. / Verden, Germany
Larsen went 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles in Barry’s three wins at Eckerd College, No. 3 Flagler College, and Embry-Riddle University. She currently holds the  No. 1 ranked singles spot in the country and is the No. 14 ranked doubles player in the nation alongside Verena Schmid. The Verden, Germany native has not lost a singles match to a Division II opponent since 2016. Larsen dropped only four games in singles all weekend and dropped just three games in doubles in the three matches.
