Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week | August 28 - September 3, 2017

Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of August 28 - September 3, 2017. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.



Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week

Nicole Mattson / Florida Southern College / Jr. / OH / Oviedo, Florida
The junior outside hitter led the Moccasins offensively at the Terrace Hotel Classic over the weekend. Mattson tallied at least 15 kills in all four of FSC’s matches this week, including 17 against No. 1 Concordia - St. Paul and 17 against No. 12 Western Washington. She reached a career high in kills at 26 during a 3-1 win over New Haven. The Oviedo, Florida native finished the weekend with 74 kills (18.5/match), a .388 hitting percentage, 39 digs, and six blocks (three assists, three solo). Florida Southern begins the season at 2-2.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week

7986Jen Kruglova / Saint Leo University / Sr. / Libero / Moscow, Russia
Kruglova racked up 55 digs (4.23/set) and recorded a .980 reception percentage with one error in 49 total attempts on the weekend. She helped the Lions to a 4-0 start including sweeps over Lenoir-Rhyne, Tusculum, and Post, while upsetting No. 7 Minnesota Duluth in four sets. Kruglova finished the match against Minnesota Duluth with 11 digs including six in the third set while picking up one service ace in the match. The Moscow native tallied a weekend high of 20 digs against Tusculum and had three matches of 10+ digs.

Volleyball Setter of the Week

7984Anna Garrett / Saint Leo University / So. / Setter / Merritt Island, Florida
Garrett is awarded the first-ever SSC Setter of the Week honor after tallying 135 assists (10.3/set) and a .382 set percentage on the weekend.  With only one ball handling error in 353 attempts, she helped the Lions to a 4-0 weekend including 3-0 wins over Lenoir-Rhyne, Tusculum, and Post while upsetting No. 7 Minnesota Duluth in four sets. The Merritt Island, Florida product tallied 20 digs (1.54/set), seven aces, four blocking assists, and six kills during the opening weekend. Garrett tallied a high of 44 assists against Minnesota Duluth while finishing the weekend with 20-plus assists per match.
 

Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

7983Damian Clarke / Rollins College / Jr. / Midfield / Bridgetown, Barbados
Clarke tallied his first career goal during the 40th minute of the season opener against Lees-McRae. Clarke’s strike helped Rollins secure a 3-3 draw. The Barbadian doubled down the next day by scoring both Tars goals in a 2-1 upset over defending national champions and top-ranked Wingate. First, Clarke headed in the game’s first score in the fourth minute of play. He then knocked in the game winner off his left foot from outside the top of the box in the 88th minute, see it here.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

7991Drew Trautmann / Rollins College / Sr. / Goalkeeper / Orlando, Florida
Trautmann made two saves in Rollins' season opening 3-3 draw against Lees-McRae. The Orlando native made a key save off a penalty kick late in overtime to help the Tars secure the tie. Trautmann then made six saves, while allowing only one goal, the next day during the Tars' 2-1 upset win over No. 1 Wingate. The weekly award is Trautmann’s second of his career.

Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

7989Erika Peitersen / University of Tampa / Fr. / Midfield / Tampa, Florida
Coming off the bench, Peitersen scored two goals in her collegiate debut on the road at Belmont Abbey. The Tampa native scored the opening goal of the season for UT and then the winner in overtime. The play of Peitersen helped the Spartans earn the 2-1 win, snapping the Crusaders 25-game home winning streak (last loss came on Sept. 20, 2014). Peitersen also scored the equalizer in Tampa's 1-1 double overtime draw at Queens.
 
Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

7985Jess Goedde / Florida Southern College / Sr. / Defender / Cincinnati, Ohio
Goedde led a Florida Southern defense to a pair of shutouts to kick off the 2017 season. The Moccasins tied Chowan 0-0 and defeated Mount Olive 3-0 on the road this past weekent. In those two games, the Moccasins gave up a total of 11 shots, including just two against Mount Olive. Goedde saw 147 minutes of action, including all 110 minutes of the double-overtime match against Chowan. The Cincinnati product scored FSC’s final goal in Sunday's 3-0 win at Mount Olive after helping set up the squad’s second goal of the game with a long downfield pass.
 
Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week

7988Bobby Ormsby / Florida Southern College / Sr. / Fort Myers, Florida
Ormsby won the Holloway Park Preseason Festival with a time of 15:44.49 in the 5,000-meter race. The Fort Myers native won by 6.9 seconds over Shaun Bullock of Embry-Riddle. Ormsby’s first collegiate win lifts Florida Southern to a second place finish among NCAA Division II schools. The weekly award is Ormsby’s third of his career.

Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week

7990Colett Rampf / Saint Leo University / Sr. / Premnitz, Germany
Rampf led Saint Leo to a first place team finish at the Holloway Park Preseason Festival on Saturday. Rampf won event, finishing first out of 116 runners, with a time of 10:18.09 over the 3,000-meter event. She led a Saint Leo contingent that finished 1-2-3 in the race. This is the 13th weekly award for the Premnitz, Germany native. She is now tied for third most is SSC history across all sports.
