2017 SSC Women's Soccer Outlook; Barry Tops the Coaches Poll

One point separates Embry-Riddle and Nova Southeastern for second place

MELBOURNE, Fla. - Sunshine State Conference women's soccer coaches' have chosen Barry University as the preseason favorite in 2017. The Buccaneers received 89 total votes and two first place votes in the poll.  

Barry has claimed the SSC regular season title nine times, six more than any other program. The Buccaneers also own two SSC postseason championships. Barry last claimed SSC regular season and postseason titles in 2015.

Coaches gave Barry a six-vote edge over Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University for first place in the poll. The Eagles received 83 votes and five first place votes. Nova Southeastern finished third with 82 total votes and two first place votes. Rollins College, Saint Leo University, and the University of Tampa finished fourth, fifth, and sixth in the poll, respectively. Saint Leo and Tampa both received a first place vote.
 
Barry and Saint Leo represent the SSC in the United Soccer Coaches women's preseason national poll. The ranking, announced Thursday, August 3rd, has Nova Southeastern and Rollins receiving votes.
 
Last season Saint Leo claimed the SSC regular season and postseason tournament championships. In the NCAA tournament, the University of West Florida defeated Nova Southeastern, Saint Leo, and Barry in subsequent rounds. Barry advanced the furthest of all SSC teams, making it to the third round following a win over Rollins.
 
SSC teams open up with non-conference matches as early as August 31st. The conference schedule begins on September 16th with 10 teams competing.
