Barry Men's Golf Wins 2017 SSC Championship, Brey Takes Medalist Honors

VIERA, Fla. - Barry University claims their third SSC golf championship and second straight tournament after posting 14-under performance across three days. The Buccaneers' Kyle Brey shot 12-under for the tournament, tying the SSC scoring record, to bring home the individual championship. The 2017 event was hosted by Florida Tech at Duran Golf Club.

Men's Final Round Recap
Brey tied an SSC Championship record, shooting 12-under 204 to win his first college tournament, following a final-round 6-under 66 at Duran Golf Club's 7,051-yard course. He becomes the fourth Barry athlete to win the tournament and the first since 2014.

The 2015 SSC Champion, John VanDerLaan (Florida Southern), finished in second place with a 6-under performance, two strokes ahead of the 2016 Champion, Manuel Torres (Lynn). Florida Tech's Gaelen Trew finished in third place, between the former champions, with a 5-under. Max O'Hagan (Florida Tech) and Mike Anderson (Barry) finished tied for fifth following scores of 2-under. The Top-5 competitors make up the All-Tournament team.

The Buccaneers won the team title with a 14-under 850 to finish six strokes ahead of runner-up Saint Leo. It now stands as the fourth best championship performance in SSC history. Barry sealed the victory with a 4-under (284) in the final round. Saint Leo's third day push fell short as the Lion finished in second place with a 6-under (856), two strokes in front of Florida Tech.

Men's Tournament Notes
The average score over the three day's at Duran was 74.35 ( 2.35), which is the lowest scoring since 2010. Sunday's average score was 73.46 ( 1.46). It is the lowest scoring average for a SSC championship round in 27 years.

Brey becomes only the eighth golfer to win the championship with a score above par.

Brey's 12-under (204) match the mark set by Florida Southern's Steve Paramore at Rio Pinar in 2003 as the lowest three-round tournament score in conference history.

Vanderlan and Torres became the 31st and 32nd SSC men's golfers to finish Top-5 two or more times at the championship.

Vanderlaan and fellow Moccasin John Coultas become two of 20 athletes to have three or more Top-10 finishes.

Brey's third day 6-under (66) was the tournament low round, which ties for third lowest in conference history. It is the sixth time a 6-under score has been posted at the championship.

There were 15 rounds in the 60's during the tournament, including three by Brey.
