Men's Tournament Notes
Sunday's average score was 73.46 ( 1.46). It is the lowest scoring average for a SSC championship round in 27 years.
Barry's 8-under (280) ties them for sixth best single round score for a team in the SSC tournament. It is the top team round since the Buccaneers went 11-under (277) at Lake Jovita in 2014.
Seven eagles were recorded on Day 1, including two by Florida Tech's Max O'Hagan. Guerra was this round's birdie leader at eight, while Brey tallied the most pars with 15.
Guerra's 5-under (67) is best SSC tournament round ever at Duran and tied for the 13th best overall. Previously, Greg O'Mahoney (Nova Southeastern) held the top score at Duran with 4-under (68) in 2008. Barnes' 4-under (68) is the top score ever by a Tampa golfer in the SSC championship. It is the first sub-70 for a Spartan since James Thompson's 69 in 1996 at Sugar Mill Country Club.
This year's field includes two former champions, Manuel Torres of Lynn who won in 2016 and John VanDerLaan from Florida Southern who won in 2015. Torres and VanDerLaan are joined by Ryan Gendron (SLU), John Coultas (FSC), Niclas Weiland (BU), Shanren Brienen (FIT), Richard Mansell (NSU), and Mario Beltran (BU) who all look to join an elite group of 30 golfers that have finished Top-5 at the SSC championship multiple times.
With another Top-10 finish, Gendron, VanderLaan, and Coultas would join only seven others who have earned the same mark three or more times in SSC championships.
