Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week | April 3 - 9, 2017

Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of April 3 - 9, 2017. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.


Baseball Player of the Week
6343Peter Nicoletto / Rollins College / Sr. / Centerfield / Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
Nicoletto slugged three home runs and five RBI in a series victory over No. 12 Florida Southern on his way to a second Player of the Week honor in 2017. The Ft. Lauderdale product recorded a .364 BA / .500 OBP / 1.182 Slugging slash line as the Tars took two of three games from the Moccasins last week. The senior captain tallied four hits in 11 at-bats and recorded five RBI, six runs, three home runs, and two walks. Nicoletto's top game was the first of the week, where he went 2-for-4 at the plate with five RBI, three runs scored, and two home runs. Rollins moves to 20-14 overall, 5-7 in SSC play.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week
7655Brad Case / Rollins College / So. / Pelham, New York
Case is named Pitcher of the Week after earning a win in Rollins’ 2-1 victory over No. 12 Florida Southern. The Pelham, New York native tossed 8.0 innings and allowed one run (earned) on four hits. Case held the 29 batters he faced to a .143 batting average and struck out 10 while walking none during the win. Rollins improves to 20-14 overall and are 5-7 in SSC play.

Softball Player of the Week
7656Alyssa Wash / Saint Leo University / So. / Outfield / St. Johns, Florida
Wash is named Player of the Week after leading Saint Leo to a SSC series sweep of Florida Tech. The St. Johns, Florida native went 6-for-10 from the plate, driving in five RBI while scoring four runs in the series. Wash hit two doubles and a home run in the series where she tagged 11 total bases and went 2-for-2 in stolen bases, ending the week with a 1.100-slugging percentage and .600 on-base percentage. In each game, Wash had a single, extra base hit, and an RBI. With the play of Wash, Saint Leo improves to improve to 34-7 and 15-3 in the SSC.

Softball Pitcher of the Week
7635Stephanie Adkins / Saint Leo University / Sr. / Orlando, Florida
Adkins takes Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week after picking up two conference victories over Florida Tech. The Orlando product pitched nine innings for Saint Leo, giving up eight hits and just one earned run for a .780 ERA. In game one, Adkins pitched 4.0 innings with three hits and just one run in the fourth inning before returning for the series finale to pitch the complete game shutout. Adkins allowed five hits in the finale game but held the Panthers scoreless. Saint Leo improves to improve to 34-7 and 15-3 in the SSC. The weekly award is the fifth of her career.


Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
7414Conor Whipple / University of Tampa / Sr. / Attack / Tampa, Florida
Whipple earns his third Offensive Player of the Week award after tallying 15 points across two games. The Tampa native combined for six goals and nine assists against No. 5 NYIT and RV Florida Southern. In a losing effort at No. 5 NYIT, he netted four goals and dished out three assists and defensively picked up two ground balls and caused two turnovers as the Spartans fell 13-11. He also had two goals and six assists and picked up one ground ball against RV Florida Southern. The Spartans are now 10-4 overall and 3-0 in conference play. The honor is Whipple's 11th of his career, the most in SSC lacrosse history.

Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
7660Jake Bye / Saint Leo University / Jr. / Defender / Port Coquitlam, British Columbia 
Bye is awarded Defensive Player of the Week following five ground balls, a caused one turnover, and two goals in Saint Leo's defeat of No. 19 Florida Tech. The Port Coquitlam, British Columbia native was apart of a team effort that included going 22-25 on clear attempts and held the Panther’s defense to just 2-7 on man-up attempts. Along with playing a big role on defensive side, he was also able to score two unassisted goals on clear attempts. Following the 13-8 victory, the Lions are now 9-3 overall and 1-2 in SSC play. 

Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week
7446Dryden Brous / Lynn University / Fr. / Faceoff / Ocean City, Maryland
Brous receives his second Specialist Player of the Week award after a strong performance in the faceoff X, going 14-of-20 (.700) against RV Rollins. The Ocean City, Maryland native also picked up nine ground balls and offensively had two assists in the overtime loss against Rollins 12-11. The Fighting Knights are now 4-6 overall and 0-3 in SSC play. 

Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
7658Sara Grenier / Florida Tech / Jr. / Attack / Oakland, Maine
Grenier earns her first Offensive Player of the Week honors after she had a season-high seven points in a victory against No. 15 Regis 15-13. The Oakland, Maine native ended up scoring six goals and an assist while also producing two caused turnovers and picking up one ground ball on the defensive side. With the help of Grenier, the Panthers went on a 9-1 run to come back from being down six at halftime. FIT is now 9-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The award is the third of Grenier's collegiate career.

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
7661Mary Gormley / Florida Tech / Jr. / Midfield / Denver, Colorado 
With her performance against No. 15 Regis, Gormley earns the Defensive Player of the Week award. The Denver, Colorado native picked up five ground balls, caused four turnovers, and had three draw controls as the Panthers took down Regis, 15-13. She also played a role on the offensive side by scoring two goals and dishing out an assist. With the help of Gormley, the Panthers are now 9-2 overall and 0-1 in the SSC.   

Men's Golfer of the Week
7127Niclas Weiland / Barry University / So. / Linkoping, Sweden
Weiland earns his second Golfer of the Week award after earning the individual victory at the Battles at the Shores and helped Barry claim their first tournament victory of the season. The Linkoping, Sweden native finished with a 7-under 206 after shooting 72, 68, 66 on the weekend after making up nine strokes with 16 holes to play on the final day of the tournament. This is his second individual tournament victory this season and the team’s first victory on the season.    

Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week
7391Mehdi Laalej / Lynn University / Jr. / Meknes, Morocco 
Laalej earns his second Athlete of the Week award after achieving victory in all six of his matches for Lynn this week at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. Against the No 2 Barry, Laalej and Florian Clemares put the Fighting Knights on the board with an 8-6 upset over the No. 4 ranked doubles team of Ahmed Triki and Pierre Montrieul. In singles, Laalej again battled Triki, the second-ranked player in the nation, in the match of the afternoon and took down the senior in a third-set super breaker, 7-5, 5-7, 10-8. Earlier in the week, the Blue and White posted 8-1 victories over both 38th-ranked Florida Tech and 28th-ranked Rollins. Laalej and Clemares won both of their doubles contests at No. 1, 8-3. In singles, Laalej bested FIT’s Aria Canadell Solana in straight sets and rebounded to beat Rollins’ Patrick Sell, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6. The Meknes, Morocco native improves to 16-1 on the year in singles and 11-2 in doubles when playing with Clemares. The Fighting Knights are 17-3 on the year with a 5-1 SSC record. This is the third career SSC weekly honor for Laalej.

Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week
7657Verena Schmid / Barry University / So. / Ellwangen, Germany 
Schmid is named Athlete of the Week after helping Barry clinch the 2017 SSC Regular Season Championship. In a pivotal SSC match against No. 2 Lynn, unranked Schmid was pitted against No. 6 Diana Bogolii. The Ellwangen, Germany native dispatched Bogolii 6-2, 6-4 as the Buccaneers defeated the Fighting Knights 5-4 to capture the title. Along with the big victory at at #3 Singles, Schmid also brought home the 8-1 win at #3 Doubles with partner Zuza Maciejewska. Schmid also won in #2 Singles and #1 Doubles against Eckerd and in #2 Doubles against NAIA No. 4 Keiser. The Buccaneers clinched the regular season title after finishing 22-0 and 9-0 in conference play.  

Boat of the Week
7404Varsity 8 / Florida Tech / Melbourne, Florida
Florida Tech’s Varsity 8 had an impressive showing at the Knecht Cup on Sunday, taking first place with a time of 6:51.03 against a talented field of DI and II teams. The Panthers’ boat of coxswain Taylor Stoni, Natalia Arasa Bonavila, Morgan Billig, Theresa Gadilhe, Graysen Pensch, Samantha Martinez, Irina Djurovic, Aurelia Gervasi and Federica Pala crossed the finish line ahead of Barry, Mercyhurst, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Nova Southeastern and Rollins A.
