Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week | February 27 - March 5, 2017

Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of February 27 - March 5, 2017. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.


Baseball Player of the Week
6608J.D. Osborne / University of Tampa / Sr. / 3B / C / Whitby, Ontario
Osborne takes Player of the Week for a second time this season after leading Tampa to a series win over RV Flagler. Osborne recorded a .818 BA / .786 OB% / 1.909 Slugging slash line against the Saints. The Whitby, Ontario native went 9-11 at the plate and tallied 10 RBI, six runs, three home runs, three doubles, and two walks. Osbourne’s top game was the last in the series, where he went 5-for-5 at the plate with five RBI, two runs scored, a double, and a homerun. With the play of Osborne, Tampa improves to 11-4 overall.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week
7523Logan Browning / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Lakeland, Florida
Browning is named Pitcher of the Week following a win against No. 20 Minnesota State Mankato. The Lakeland, Florida native struck out 11 batters in six innings of work, allowing just two hits and two walks while giving up an earned run. Florida Southern defeated Minnesota State Mankato 2-1 to move to 10-6 on the season.
 

Softball Player of the Week
7524Dana Edmundson / Nova Southeastern University / Jr. / Centerfield / Panama City, Fla. 
Edmundson hit .500 in a three-game series against No. 8 Saint Leo to take Player of the Week. The Panama City, Florida product led Nova Southeastern at the plate by tallying five hits in 10 at bats while recording five RBI and three scored runs. Edmundson had a hit and stolen base in all three games as the Sharks took two of three from the Lions. Her top performance came in game two where she went 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI, two runs scored, a walk and a double. For the week, Edmundson recorded a slashline of .500 BA / .583 OB% / 0.900 Slugging while achieving a 1.000% in fielding percentage and stolen base percentage. NSU is now 8-10 on the year, 3-3 in SSC play.
 
Softball Pitcher of the Week

Sarah Piening / Rollins College / Fr. / Old Tappan, New Jersey
Piening earned two wins in route to a Tars sweep of SSC rival Florida Southern and Pitcher of the Week honors. The Old Tappan, New Jersey native surrendered just three earned runs in 13.1 innings of work. The freshman struck out eight batters, including the final two batters in the game one victory. Piening held the Mocs to a .167 batting average against over her two appearances. Rollins is now 12-8 overall, 4-2 in SSC play.


Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
7389Kyle Pauwels / Saint Leo University / Jr. / Attack / Kamloops, British Columbia
Pauwels has been named the Offensive Player of the Week for a second time following his performance against No. 2 Limestone. Pauwels scored six goals against the Saints in a 17-10 loss. The total is a season-high for Pauwels and the most goals for an individual against Limestone this year. The Kamloops, British Columbia native finished with an 87.5 shot on goal percentage and a 75.0 percent shot percentage. The Lions are now 3-1 overall. 

Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Matt Lalli / Florida Southern College / Sr. / GoalKeeper / New Milford, Connecticut
Lalli is named the Defensive Player of the Week for the second time after going 1-1 against two top-20 opponents. For the week, Lalli tallied 38 saves on 85 shots as he earned a .633 save percentage. The New Milford, Connecticut native tied a career record and the second-best single-game mark in school history with 22 saves in the upset of No. 17 Lake Erie. The senior also had 16 saves in a 17-10 loss to No. 5 NYIT as the Moccasins move to 2-3 overall. 

Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week
7527Travis Quillin / Lynn University / So. / LSM / Sharptown, Maryland
Quillin registered a career first multi-goal game to be awarded the Specialist of the Week. The Sharptown, Maryland native finished with two goals on five shots in Lynn’s 12-8 victory over Young Harris. Quillin recorded a ground ball pickup and helped the Fighting Knights face off crew to a 15-9 edge over Young Harris. The Fighting Knights remain undefeated on the season at 3-0.

Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

7525Kallie German / Rollins College / So. / Centreville, Maryland
German has earned Offensive Player of the Week after accounting for five goals and eight assists to help the Tars to two straight victories. The Centreville, Maryland native opened the week with a three-goal, four-assist performance to lead the Tars in overall points and notch a new career high in points in a game as the Tars took down the Wheeling Jesuit, 19-5. German finished her week with two goals and four assists against No. 18 Stonehill. With a 16-11 win over the Skyhawks, The Tars improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play. 

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Sam Schiano / Florida Tech / So. / Midfield / Perry Hall, Maryland
Schiano was named the Defensive Player of the Week after racking up 15 ground balls, six draw controls, and causing seven turnovers in three games. Schianno tallied six ground balls, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers in a 22-0 victory over Wheeling Jesuit. The Perry Hall, Maryland native then grabbed four rebounds and a draw control while causing three turnovers in FIT’s 14-7 victory over Saint Anselm. In the final game of the week, Schiano recorded five ground balls, two draw controls, and two caused turnovers as Florida Tech defeated Montevallo 18-2.  On the offensive end, the sophomore scored six goals and assisted on two others. The Panthers are now 5-1 on the season.


Mansell played an instrumental role in the Sharks winning the Armstrong State Pirate Invitational last week. After opening with the tournament's lowest round score of 65 in the opening round, he continued to lead the remainder of the tournament to finish at 208 (-8) to capture individual medalist honors, six stroke ahead of second place. His opening round of 65 matched his career-lowest round, a feat he has only recorded once before and what only four other golfers had done before him in NSU history. He is also the only player in school history to hit that mark twice in a career. Through 54 holes, the Sharks shot a three-round 873 (+9) to finish 24 strokes ahead of a field that was composed of five Top-25 teams. The Sharks led from start to finish with the lowest first and second round scores. Their second round of 284 was the tournament low over the two-day event. 
 
Women's Golfer of the Week

Tilda Larsson / Barry University / So. / Emmaboda, Sweden
Larsson is named the Golfer of the Week for third time this season following a tied for third finish at the University of Miami Hurricane Invitational. Larsson finished at three-under (213) and just three strokes behind the individual winner Hannah Kim of Northwestern. Larsson helped the Buccaneers finish above ten Division-I programs as Barry settled in fifth overall. The Emmaboda, Sweden native is currently the Division-II number one ranked player. The Buccaneers finished with a three-day total of 883 (+19) in the tournament. 

Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Jean-Baptiste Mateo / Lynn University / Jr. / Marseille, France
Mateo has been named the Athlete of the week for the second time as No. 8 Lynn defeated No. 40 Florida Southern. Partnered with Tristan Houle, the duo got an early 8-2 victory at the No. 3 doubles spot. In singles play, the No. 19 ranked Mateo secured the first of four singles matches as the Lynn University made a comeback. The comeback started when the Marseille, France native defeated Fabian Lundberg 6-1, 6-1 at the top singles flight. With the play of Mateo, the Fighting Knights are 7-2 overall, 2-0 in SSC play. 

Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Luicelena Perez / Nova Southeastern University / Gr. / Valencia, Venezuela
Perez is awarded Athlete of the Week for the second time following a 5-4 win over No. 38 Rollins. In No. 1 doubles play, Perez and Isabella Lowrey had an 8-6 victory over Fabiana Vitanza and Carlye Goldman, this is Perez’s sixth straight doubles win. Then in No. 1 singles play, the Valencia, Venezuela native stayed undefeated as she won 6-1, 6-2 over Fabiana Vitanza. The No. 15 Sharks improve to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in SSC play.
