Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week | March 13 - 19, 2017

Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of March 13 - 19, 2017. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.


Baseball Player of the Week
6608J.D. Osborne / University of Tampa / Sr. / 3B / C / Whitby, Ontario
Osborne takes Player of the Week for a third time this season after leading Tampa to a series sweep against No. 3 Nova Southeastern. Osborne recorded a .533 BA / .500 OB% / 1.200 Slugging slash line against the Sharks by going 8-15 at the plate. The Whitby, Ontario native tallied nine RBI, five runs, three home runs, and a walk. Osborne’s top game was the last in the series, where he went 4-for-6 at the plate with three RBI, two runs scored, and a homerun. With the play of Osborne, Tampa improves to 19-5 overall and 8-1 in SSC play.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week
7478David Lebron / University of Tampa / Jr. / Homestead, Florida
Lebron is named Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season, second consecutive, after earning a win in Tampa’s 6-0 victory over No. 3 Nova Southeastern. The Homestead, Florida native tossed 8.0 innings and allowed eight hits. Lebron held the 32 batters he faced to a .250 batting average while he struck out four and walked none during the win. Tampa improves to 19-5 overall and 8-1 in SSC play.
 

Softball Player of the Week
7580Alexus Smith / Florida Tech / So. / 3B / Palm Bay, Florida
Smith has been named the Softball Player of the Week after hitting .550 across five games for Florida Tech. The Palm Bay, Florida native was responsible for multiple hits in four games, including two three-hit games, as the Panthers went 4-1 this week. Smith’s top game was a 2-for-3 effort against Palm Beach Atlantic in which she drove in three runs, scored twice, and hit a homerun. The third baseman had a weekly on-base average of .550 while slugging 1.050. Six of Smith’s 11 hits went for extra bases. She also drove in 10 runs and scored four times as Florida Tech improve to 16-17 overall.

Softball Pitcher of the Week
7587Lexie Storrer / Nova Southeastern University / Fr. / Olathe, Kansas
Storrer is selected as Pitcher of the Week following four complete-game victories and a 0.75 earned run average this past week. The Olathe, Kansas native tossed 28.0 innings allowing three runs (all earned) on 22 hits while holding opponents to a .212 batting average. Storrer struck out 30 batters and allowed four walks. Her top game was an eight-inning shutout against Bemidji State where she struck out 11 and walked none. On the offensive side, Storrer had a batting average of .360 over eight games. She tallied five runs, six RBI, three doubles, and a triple. The Sharks are now 17-16 overall.


Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
7581Jake Gilmour / Saint Leo University / Jr. / Attack / Pickering, Ontario
Gilmour finished the week with 12 points on four goals and eight assists to earn Offensive Player of the Week. The junior averaged 6.0 points per game as the Lions went 2-0 over the week. He also added three ground balls and one caused turnover. Against UAH, Gilmour finished with eight points as he dished out six assists and added two goals. He also added a ground ball. In the Lions win over NGU, Gilmour led the team with four points as he tallied two goals and two assists. He also picked up two ground balls and added a caused turnover. Gilmour leads the SSC in points per game (5.75), and assists per game (3.13), both which are top 10 in the nation. He is fourth in assists per game in all of Division II, and sixth in points per game.

Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
7390Thomas Tatarian / Saint Leo University / So. / Goalkeeper / Shoreham, New York
Tatarian picked up a two-win week in goal for Saint Leo on his way to a second Defensive Player of the Week honor. Tatarian and the Lions topped both Alabama-Huntsville and North Greenville. In the Lions 21-3 win over UAH, Tatarian finished with 12 saves and only allowed two goals in 45 minutes of action. He finished with a 85.7-save percentage against the Chargers. In the Lions 9-7 win over NGU, the sophomore snagged a career-high 16 saves with a 69.6 save percentage. He finished with 28 saves on the week, and a 75.7-save percentage while adding two GBS. He faced a total of 53 shots, and only allowed nine total goals in two games.

Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week
7585Lance Pavlina / Florida Tech / Jr. / Faceoff Desert Vista, Arizona
Pavlina is named Specialist of the Week after posting an .789 winning percentage in faceoffs during the week after going 15-of-19 against Notre Dame de Namur. The Desert Vista, Arizona native went also recording a season high 13 ground balls as the Panthers captured a 22-6 victory over Notre Dame de Namur. After three consecutive victories, the Panthers are 4-4 on the season.
 

Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
7586Emily Santoli / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Fort Salonga, New York
Santoli scored 10 goals and dished out six assists in three games to earn Offensive Player of the Week honors. The Fort Salonga, New York native had three goals, including the game-winner, and two assists in the win over Bloomsburg. She then poured in five goals and tallied an assist in a win against No. 16 Indiana (Pa.). Santoli also scored two goals and dished out three assists in a victory against Seton Hill. For the week, she went 3-of-6 on free-position shots, picked up seven ground balls, won nine draw controls, and caused four turnovers. Following a 3-0 week, the Moccasins are now 11-2 overall.

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
7584Malorie Olin / Rollins College / Jr. / Goalkeeper / Skaneateles, New York
Olin is awarded Defensive Player of the Week after 120 minutes between the pipes during two Rollins victories. The Skaneateles, New York native opened up the week with seven saves and two ground balls against Seton Hill, where she faced 16 shots from the Griffins, allowing only seven goals. Olin closed out the week with 12 saves against Belmont Abbey. Olin faced 18 shots from the Crusaders, allowing only three goals all contest. On the week, Olin added three ground balls. The Tars are now  8-2 overall and are riding a seven-game winning streak.

Men's Golfer of the Week
7086Richard Mansell / Nova Southeastern University / Sr. / Staffordshire, England
Mansell helped lead the Nova Southeastern University men's golf team to a tie for seventh place out of 18 teams at the 2017 Southeastern Collegiate Classic last week. After finishing the first round in 13th-place, Mansell helped the Sharks climb back into contention and ended tied for 7th overall. As an individual, Mansell began the tournament with an opening round of 77 (+5), but came back to shoot two rounds under par with a 71 (-1) in the second and a 66 (-6) in the third to end with a three-round score of 214 (-2) to finish second overall out of a field of 93 despite the adverse weather conditions throughout the tourney. Mansell was also one of two Sunshine State Conference players that was selected to play in the 2017 Arnold Cup and the only Division II player selected to play for Team Europe. This is his third SSC Golfer of the Week award this season.
 
Women's Golfer of the Week
7583Michelle Ruiz / Nova Southeastern University / Jr. / Ontario, Canada
Ruiz helped lead the Nova Southeastern University women's golf team to an impressive win at the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational last week and beat the 14-team field by 17 strokes. It was the first win for the team this season as they successfully defended their tournament title from a year ago when they finished first out of 17 teams. As an individual, Ruiz captured her first-ever individual medalist honor winning the tournament with a three-round 218 (+2). She shot a 72 (E) in the first round, a 70 (-2) in the second and closed out in the final round at 76 (+4). She won medalist honors by two strokes.

Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week
7453Jean-Baptiste Mateo / Lynn University / Jr. / Marseille, France
Mateo has been named the Athlete of the week for the fourth time, third consecutive, as as he won all eight of his matches to help lift the eighth-ranked Fighting Knights to a 4-0 record on the week, including wins over No. 29 Indianapolis and No. 23 St. Mary’s (Texas). Mateo and Tristan Houle won all four matches together at No. 3 doubles, improving their record to 7-0 on the season. In singles, 19th-ranked Mateo didn’t drop a set all week playing at the No. 2 flight. He started off the week with a 6-3, 6-1 win vs. Auburn Montgomery on Monday, a 6-0, 6-1 triumph against Queens (N.Y.) on Tuesday and capped off the stretch with an impressive 6-0, 6-0 blanking of UIndy’s 29th-ranked Christoph Dreschler on Wednesday. He closed out the week with a 6-0, 6-2 victory in the win over St. Mary’s. In singles for the week, Mateo won 48 games and lost seven. Mateo improves to 14-1 in doubles on the season and remains undefeated in singles action with a team-high 15 wins. Lynn is 13-2 on the year, winners of 11 straight.

Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week
7582Zuza Maciejewska / Barry University / So. / Ciechocinek, Poland
Maciejewska is awarded Athlete of the Week accolades after winning back-to-back No. 1 singles matches over nationally-ranked opponents, including the No. 3-ranked player in the country from Indianapolis. The Ciechocinek, Poland native Is 3-1 vs. nationally-ranked opponents this season. Against Auburn Montgomery, Maciejewska defeated #26 Kelly Southwood (6-4, 6-3) at #1 Singles and along with teammate Verena Schmid, defeated Paula Diaz/Anna Rudolfova ( 8-3) at #1 Doubles. Maciejewska then defeated No. 16 Indianapolis’ Hanna Volikova (6-1, 6-1) at #1 Singles Doubles competition. Volikova is currently ranked No. 3 in ITA singles. Again paired with Schmid, Maciejewska defeated UIndy’s Bella Bergman/Mara Hofstetter (8-1) at #2 Doubles. Barry defeated Auburn Montgomery (7-2) and Indianapolis (8-1) to improve to 15-0 this season.

Boat of the Week
7404Varsity 4 / Florida Tech / Melbourne, Florida
Florida Tech’s Varsity 4 earns the first SSC Boat of the Week award in 2017. The Panthers got off to impressive start to the season, earning a dominate sweep over two-time defending National Champion Barry at the Governor's Cup Regatta in Fellsmere, Florida. The Panthers' biggest victory came in the Varsity 4 race, where the boat of Aurelia Gervasi, Ally McCarron, Emily Hall, bow Katie Coughlan and coxswain Hana Malia Ito finished the race in 7:58.10, nearly 25 seconds ahead of the Buccaneers (8:22.78).
