Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of March 6 - March 12, 2017. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.
Baseball Player of the Week
Peter Nicoletto / Rollins College / Sr. / Centerfield / Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
Nicolletto slugged six home runs in five games on his way to Player of the Week Honors. The Ft. Lauderdale product single handedly lead Rollins to three victories, including helping the Tars earn their first SSC win of 2017. Nicoletto recorded a .522 BA / .577 OB% / 1.435 Slugging slash line and 33 total bases as Rollins went 3-2 last week. The senior captain tallied 12 hits in 23 at-bats and recorded 13 RBI, 11 runs, six home runs, a triple, a double, and two walks. Nicoletto's top game was the first of the week, where he went 3-for-5 at the plate with five RBI, four runs scored, and three home runs. Rollins moves to 14-6 overall, 1-2 in SSC play.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
David Lebron / University of Tampa / Jr. / Homestead, Florida
Lebron is named Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season after earning a win in Tampa's 12-1 victory over Saint Leo. The Homestead, Florida native tossed 7.0 innings and allowed one run (unearned) on seven hits. Lebron held the 32 batters he faced to a .226 batting average and struck out 13 while walking just one during the win. Tampa improves to 16-4 overall and are 5-1 in SSC play.
Softball Player of the Week
Karolina Flores / Lynn University / Fr. / Shortstop / Moreno Valley, California
Flores has been named the Softball Player of the Week for the second time after helping Lynn to a 6-2 weekly record. The Moreno Valley, California native was responsible for multiple hits in six games, including two three-hit games. Her top game was a 2-for-3 effort against Oakland City in which she drove in four runs and scored twice. The short stop had a weekly batting average of .526 and on-base average of .586 while slugging .925. Six of Flores' 15 hits went for extra bases as she drove in 10 runs and scored four times. With the play of Flores, the Fighting Knights improve to 13-14 overall.
Softball Pitcher of the Week
Makaleigh Dooley / University of Tampa / So. / Tampa, Florida
Dooley is selected as Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season after five wins last week. Dooley went 5-0 for Tampa last week with four complete games. The Tampa native tossed 31.2 innings allowing nine runs (six earned) on 22 hits while holding opponents to a .195 batting average. Dooley struck out 33 batters and allowed just one walk. innings pitched. Her top game was a seven-inning no-hitter against Southwest Minnesota State where she struck out seven and walked one. The no-hitter is a career first for Dooley. After a 6-1 week, the Spartans are now 19-4 overall, 9-3 in SSC Play.
Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Nick Wynne / Florida Tech / Sr. / Attack / Sykesville, Maryland
Wynne earns Offensive Player of the Week after leading Florida Tech to a wins over Chestnut Hill and No. 5 Seton Hill. The senior recorded a goal and an assist as the Panthers defeated Chestnut Hill 12-11. He also picked up four ground balls in the victory. Wynne tallied a hat trick to guide the Panthers in a 5-3 upset win over No. 5 Seton Hill. The Sykesville, Maryland native scored the game winner with 30 seconds to play.
After a 2-0 week, the Panthers are now 3-4 on the season.
Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Daniel Flock / Florida Tech / Jr. / GoalKeeper / Ellicott City, Maryland
Flock has been named the Defensive Player of the Week after helping Florida Tech to a 2-0 record on the week, including an upset of No. 5 Seton Hill. The Ellicott City, Maryland native recorded a season-best 19 saves holding Seton Hill to 13 goals below their season average in the 5-3 FIT victory. Flock also had 13 saves and three ground balls in a 12-11 win over Chestnut Hill. The Panthers are now 3-4 on the season.
Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week
Mitch Wilson / Saint Leo University / Jr. / Midfield / Orchard Park, New York
Wilson has earned his second Specialist of the Week honor after posting an 88.1 winning percentage in faceoffs during the week after going 37-for-42. The Orchard Park, New York native went 22-for-24 in the faceoff circle while also recording a career high 15 ground balls as the Lions defeated Westminster 16-9. Wilson also went 15-for-18 and added 13 ground balls to help the Lions to a 26-3 victory over Emmanuel. Saint Leo is now 5-1 on the season.
Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Hannah Ashton / Rollins College / Fr. / Berwyn, Pennsylvania
Ashton has been named the Offensive Player of the Week for the second time after she tallied six goals, one assist, and eight draw controls. In a 13-9 upset victory over No. 7 Limestone, Ashton scored four goals and accounted for five draw controls. The Berwyn, Pennsylvania product then scored two goals, had one assist, and three draw controls in a win against Alabama-Huntsville. With the play of Ashton the Tars increase their win streak to five game and are 6-2 overall.
Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Dani Bursinger / Florida Southern College / So. / Midfield / Powell, Ohio
Bursinger has been selected as the Defensive Player of the Week after winning 22 draw controls, picking up six ground balls, and causing two turnovers in three games. Against Fort Lewis, Bursinger had eight draw controls, four ground balls, and a caused turnover in a 20-10 victory. She followed that performance with five draw controls in an 18-2 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan. Then in an 11-8 victory over No. 8 Queens, the Powell, Ohio native tallied five draw controls and one ground ball. On the offensive end, the sophomore scored four goals and three assists. Bursinger, the SSC leader in Draw Controls per game, increases her average to 5.10 as the Mocs improve their record to 8-2.
Men's Golfer of the Week
John VanDerLaan / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Southbury, Connecticut
VanDerLaan has been named the Golfer of the Week for the second time in 2016-17 after leading Florida Southern to a win at the Panther Invitational. VanDerLaan picking up his first individual win of the season by shooting a four-under par 212, The Moccasins also claimed a three-stroke victory over the field at Florida Tech's invite. The Southbury, Connecticut native finished with of scores of 72, 72, and 68, with his score in the final round the best individual round in the tournament. VanDerLaan has four top-five finishes on the season and this was the fourth individual win by a Moccasin golfer this season.
Women's Golfer of the Week
Tilda Larsson / Barry University / So. / Emmaboda, Sweden
Larsson is named the Golfer of the Week for the fourth time this season following a tied for second finish at the Pioneer Shootout in Vallejo, California. Larsson finished the final round two strokes behind the leader with a final score of 147. In the tournament, Larsson finished with six total birdies, four of which came in the final day of play. The Emmaboda, Sweden native has finished in the top 10 in every event this season and is currently ranked the No. 1 women's golfer in Division-II. The Buccaneers finished with a two-day total of 609 ( 33) in the tournament.
Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week
Jean-Baptiste Mateo / Lynn University / Jr. / Marseille, France
Mateo has been selected as the Athlete of the Week for the third time as No. 8 Lynn defeated No. 44 Lewis University and Division-I Boston University. In a 9-0 sweep over the No. 44 Lewis University, Mateo and Tristan Houle posted an 8-2 victory in doubles play before Mateo won in straight sets at the No. 1 singles spot, 6-2, 6-2. With the help of Mateo against Division-I Boston University, the Fighting Knights took down the Terriers, 8-1. Mateo and Houle teamed up again for an 8-6 win in pairs play with Mateo securing another straight-set win at the top singles position (6-3, 6-3). The Marseille, France native is currently ranked No. 19 in singles play and is 10-1 in doubles play. With the help of Mateo, Lynn is 9-2 overall and 2-0 in SSC play.
Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week
Simone Pratt / Nova Southeastern University / Jr. / Freeport, Bahamas
Pratt has been named the Athlete of the Week after going 2-0 in both No. 2 singles and doubles as No. 15 Nova Southeastern University went 1-1. In No. 2 singles spot, the Freeport, Bahamas native extended her winning streak to five after picking up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Toledo's Colleen O'Brien and shutting out No. 43 Tarleton States Elena Precadca, 6-0, 6-0. Teamed with Nastassia Rubel, the No. 2 doubles remained undefeated (9-0) picking up an 8-5 win over Toldeo's Megan Miller and Mimi Kendall-Woseley and dominating Erika Johnston and Tori Simmons, 8-1 from No. 43 Tarleton State. The No. 15 Sharks improve to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in SSC play.
