Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week | February 6 - February 12, 2017

Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of February 6 - February 12, 2017. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.


Men's Basketball Player of the Week
7402Brett Hanson / Florida Southern College / Fr. / Guard / Manchester, New Hampshire
Hanson earns Player of the Week honors after averaging 22.0 points and 14.0 rebounds in two games this week. Hanson scored a season-high 29 points and grabbed a season best 20 rebounds (15 Defensive) in a  110-100 win over Embry-Riddle. The Manchester, New Hampshire native shot 60.0 percent from the floor against the Eagles while he also tallied two steals. He scored 15 points and snagged eight rebounds in the win at Florida Tech. Overall, Hanson shot a combined 51.4 percent from the floor during the week. With the play of Hanson, the Moccasins move to 11-13 on the year and 8-6 in SSC play.  

Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week
Kyei is named the Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after leading a strong defensive effort this week for Eckerd. Kyei and the Tritons held opponents to an average of 49 points per game across the two wins. The Tritons held the Tampa to a season-low 46 points and was able to hold Nova Southeastern to 52 points, 31 and 19 points below their respective season averages. The Aussie  had 13 defensive rebounds and three steals during the week as the Tritons improved to 18-6 overall and 11-4 in conference play.

Women's Basketball Player of the Week
7405Ashley Folsom / Eckerd College / Sr. / Deltona, Florida
Folsom earns Player of the Week after after becoming the third-highest single game point scorer in Eckerd program history and scoring the most points in a game since 2007. The Deltona, Florida native scored 32 points on 13-of-25 shooting at Tampa as the Tritons were victorious, 65-58. Folsom followed the historic night with a 12-point game in a road victory against Nova Southeastern. On the week, Folsom was 19-of-33 from the floor during the week and averaged 6.5 rebounds per game. With the help of Folsom, the Tritons improved to 20-4 overall and 13-2 in conference play.

Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

Asia Royster / Saint Leo University / So. / Guard / Tampa, Florida
Royster has been named Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. The Tampa native is coming off of a week where she snagged 11 defensive rebounds and nine total steals while leading Saint Leo to two conference victories. Against Lynn, Royster held the third highest scorer in the conference to just 37.5 percent from the field. She also pulled down six defensive rebounds, tallied four steals, and blocked two shots as SLU defeated Lynn, 66-61. On the offensive side end of the court she set a career-high of 28 points against Lynn. During a 70-65 home victory against Florida Tech, Royster had five defensive rebounds and five steals, while providing the Lions with 12 points.. With the help of her defensive play, the Lions are now 8-14 overall and 3-11 in SSC play.
Baseball Player of the Week
7403Karl Ellison / Lynn University / Sr. / C-1B /  Naples, Florida
Ellison is named Player of the Week after helping Lynn take a three-game series over RV Columbus State. His top game of the series was a game one loss where he went 3-of-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, two RBI, and a Home Run. Overall on the weekend, he went 6-for-9 at the plate with two homers, six RBI, four runs scored and a walk. In the series-clinching win against the Cougars, the senior transfer was one double short of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-3 with a walk on the day. The Naples, Florida product had a three-game slashline of .667 BA / .727 OBP / 1.091 Slugging.  The Fighting Knights are now 4-3 on the season.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week
7415Jake Walsh / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Indinalantic, Florida
Walsh earns Pitcher of the Week honors after leading Florida Southern to victory over No. 33 Mount Olive. The Indialantic, Florida product struck out 10 batters in eight innings pitched, while allowing no runs on five hits. Walsh issued no walks and retired his last 19 batters in order as the Moccasins won the game 1-0.  Florida Southern moves to 5-3 overall.

Softball Player of the Week
7407Erica Morrissey / Florida Southern College  / Sr. / 3B / Lakeland, Florida
Morrissey reached base in all four games for Florida Southern over the weekend and had at least one hit in three. The Lakeland, Florida native’s top game came against Georgia Southwestern on Friday evening.  Morrissey had four hits and five RBI in an 8-0 win. On Saturday, Morrissey was a part of two of the three innings in which the Mocs scored in their 9-1 win over Georgia Southwestern, reaching on a single and HBP, and scoring runs in each of them. Defensively, Morrissey handled 17 chances at third without an error, made a spectacular play against Newberry that helped keep the game scoreless into extra innings, and ended Saturday by turning a double play that allowed the Moccasins to defeat Georgia Southwestern by the 8-run rule. Morrissey finishes the week with .500 batting average, .600 on-base percentage, and .833 slugging percentage. Florida Southern is now 4-3 overall.
Pence was named Tournament MVP at the 2017 NFCA Leadoff Classic this weekend.. The senior earned three complete-game victories to move her season mark to 6-1 and added a save in the Panthers' win over Central Missouri. In the opening game of the tournament, Pence pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts and no walks, allowing four hits and two runs (one earned) as FIT defeated St. Mary's, 5-2, on Friday. On Saturday, Pence led the Panthers to a dominating upset victory (5 innings) over No. 10 Wayne State, 8-0, recording three strikeouts, no walks and allowing one hit. In the second game on Saturday, a 3-2 win over Central Missouri, the Jacksonville product pitched two innings in relief, picking up the save while throwing four strikeouts and issuing a walk. Pence threw her third complete game in the final matchup of the weekend on Sunday, notching five strikeouts while allowing seven hits and five runs (three earned) as FIT defeated Georgia College, 6-5. The Panthers have started the 2017 season with a 7-3 record.


Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
7414Conor Whipple / University of Tampa / Sr. / Attack / Tampa, Florida
Whipple is named Offensive Player of the Week after his performance against Queens University. The reigning SSC Player of the Year tallied eight points in the Spartan’s, 14-9, home victory. Whipple scored five times on 11 shots (eight on goal) and added three assists, while picking up three ground balls and causing a turnover. Tampa moves to 2-0 to start the season. 

Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Matt Lalli / Florida Southern College / Sr. / Goalkeeper /  New Milford, Connecticut
Lalli earns Defensive Player of the Week accolades after his performance against No. 7 LIU Post. The goalkeep made 14 saves, including five in the second quarter, while allowing 11 goals (two powerplay goals). The New Milford, Connecticut native faced a total of 40 shots in the contest, 25 of which were on goal, and tallied a .560 save percentage. Lalli provided FSC with six key saves in the second half as the team battled back to knot the game at 10 in the final two minutes. Ultimately, Florida Southern fell, 11-10, on a last second goal.

Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week
7411Mitch Wilson / Saint Leo University / Jr. / Midfield / Orchard Park, New York
Willson takes Specialist of the Week after helping Saint Leo to a second consecutive win. The midfielder won 18 of 20 faceoff attempts for a 90-percent winning percentage against Chowan last week. The Orchard Park, New York product also picked up a career-high 13 ground balls and added an assist in the, 25-5, Saint Leo victory.
 


Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

7401Hannah Ashton / Rollins College / Fr. / Midfield / Berwyn, Pennsylvania
Ashton is named Offensive Player of the Week following  her collegiate debut. The Berwyn, Pennsylvania native tallied four goals and one assist for five points as Rollins defeated Tampa, 24-6, in SSC play. Ashton lead the Tars in both goals and points. She added one ground ball and three draw controls to her nightly stat line en route to Rollins' victory.


Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Lindsay Van Beck / Rollins College / So. / Defender / Atlanta, Georgia
Van Beck was integral in Rollins’, 24-6, win over Tampa on Wednesday night. The Atlanta native earned one ground ball, two draw controls, as well as three caused turnovers as the Tars picked up a win in their season and SSC opener. Van Beck's diligence on defense helped hold the Spartans to just 14 shots and 12 shots on frame, while helping to hold UT to no free-position shots.
O'Hagan is named Golfer of the Week after a strong performance in Florida Tech's first tournament of the spring, the Titan Winter Invitational on February 6-7 at Suntree Country Club's Classic Course. The Freshman led the Panthers by tying for second overall with a three-round score of 218 (+2). O'Hagan shot 74 and 75 in the first two rounds and then closed the event with a 69 (-3) in the final round to help FIT place third overall in the competition.

Women's Golfer of the Week

Tilda Larsson / Barry University / So. / Emmaboda, Sweden
Larsson earns Golfer of the Week after breaking Barry’s school record for most career victories. The Swede also tied the school record for the second time for wins in a season. Larsson shot career-low 68 in first round of the World Golf Invitational at Slammer & Squire at World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Florida. The 68 was the tournament’s lowest round. She followed with a second round 73 for a 141 total, edging Lynn’s Samantha Barber by one stroke. Larsson is now now ranked No. 1 in Division II. The weekly award is her second of the 2016-17 season.

Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Ahmed Triki / Barry University / Sr. / Tunis, Tunisia
Triki earns weekly accolades after defeating No. 10 Embry-Riddle's Juan Ortiz Couder [6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 12-10] at No. 1 singles. With the win, he keeps his 38-match singles win streak in tact, which dates back to his freshman year. The senior won his No. 1 singles match vs. No. 33 Flagler's Lukas Storck [6-4, 6-4] and paired with Pierre Montrieul for an, 8-5, No. 1 doubles win over Storck and Felipe Carvalho.
Perez takes weekly accolades after she went 2-0 in No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. Perez defeated No. 14 Valdosta State’s Bea Morales Hernandez (No. 17) [6-2, 6-2] and also defeated College of Coastal Georgia’s Daniella Caruso [ 6-0, 6-0] in No. 1 singles. The Venezuelan was paired up in No. 1 doubles with Isabella Lowrey when they defeated Valdosta State’s Bea Morales Hernandez/Anke Poncelet 8-5 and took an 8-2 victory over the College of Coastal Georgia’s Daniella Caruso/Samantha Sepe. She is now 4-0 in the No. 1 singles slot and has won three straight doubles matches improving her record with Isabella Lowrey to 3-1.
