SSC Athletes of the Week | November 6 - 12, 2017
Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of November 6 - 12, 2017. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.
Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week
Nicole Mattson / Florida Southern College / Jr. / OH / Oviedo, Florida
Mattson recorded a pair of double-doubles to earn her third Offensive Player of the Week award in 2017. Against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Mattson had 15 kills and 19 digs in a 3-0 FSC win. The Oviedo, Florida native then recorded 14 kills and 10 digs in a sweep of Florida Tech. The junior finished the week with a .338 hitting percentage, 29 kills, 29 digs, two aces, and two blocks. With the play of Mattson, Florida Southern extend its winning streak to 15-straight matches, the most since 1993. The Moccasins are now 22-6 overall, 16-1 in league play.
Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Kerra Tirado / Rollins College / Jr. / MB / Silver Springs, Maryland
Tirado picks up Defensive Player of the Week after posting up 10 blocks on the weekend for Rollins. Against Nova Southeastern University, Tirado put up three assisted blocks, as well as the Tars' lone solo block. She added five kills on a .333 attack percentage and one dig in the losing effort. In Rollins' come-from-behind five-set victory over Barry University, Tirado led the team with six blocks while adding six kills, and two digs. The Tars sit at 9-17 on the year and 6-13 in SSC play.
Volleyball Setter of the Week
Bethany Besancenez / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Setter / St. Peters, Missouri
Besancenez is awarded her fourth Setter of the Week honor this year, second consecutive, after averaging 13.5 assists per set across two victories. Besancenez started the week with 39 assists in a sweep of the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The St. Peters, Missouri native then put up 42 assists in a 3-0 sweep of Florida Tech. Besancenez finished the weekend with 81 assists, 23 digs, two blocks, and a kill. With the play of Besancenez, Florida Southern extend its winning streak to 15-straight matches, the most since 1993. The Moccasins are now 22-6 overall, 16-1 in league play.
Men’s Basketball Player of the Week
Pat Bacon / University of Tampa / Jr. / Guard / Indianapolis, Indiana
Bacon is awarded Player of the Week for the second time in his career following a pair of Tampa wins over south region opponents. In the season opener against the University of North Alabama, Bacon led all scorers with 27 points. He added five rebounds, two steals, and two assists to his stat sheet during the Spartans 90-81 overtime victory. The Indianapolis, Indiana native then scored 30 points in Tampa’s 102-96 OT victory against the University of Alabama - Huntsville the next day. Bacon shot 18-for-18 from the line in the victory while also providing UT with six rebounds, five assists, and two steals. He becomes the first Spartan since 1961 (George Shary) to make 18 free throws in a game. For the week, Bacon scored 57 points by shooting 54% from the field (15-28) and 84% from the free throw line (27-32) in 86 minutes on the court.
Men’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week
Duke Shelton / University of Tampa / Sr. / Forward / Ocala, Florida
Shelton is named Defensive Player of the Week following two double-doubles and 25 defensive rebounds in two Tampa wins. In the season opener against the University of North Alabama, Shelton tallied 16 rebounds (14 defensive) and 11 points as the Spartans won 90-81 in overtime. The Ocala, Florida native then led all players with 31 points and 16 rebounds (11 defensive) in Tampa’s 102-96 OT victory against the University of Alabama - Huntsville. Shelton also provided the Spartans with five blocks and a steal in the win. The weekly honor is the third of his career.
Women’s Basketball Player of the Week
Anja Fuchs-Robetin / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Forward / Vienna, Austria
Fuchs-Robetin is awarded Player of the Week following a pair of double-doubles during Florida Southern’s opening weekend. In the season opener against Shorter University, Fuchs-Robetin recorded the game-high in points (18) and rebounds (12). She added a steal and a blocked shot in the 77-63 Moccasins victory. The Austrian then provided FSC with 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds in a 70-68 loss to Lee University. For the week, Fuchs-Robetin scored 31 points by shooting 67% from the field (14-21) and 56% from the free throw line (5-9) in 60 minutes of action.
Women’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week
Kacie Juday / Eckerd College / Sr. / Guard-Forward / Tipton, Indiana
Juday is named Defensive Player of the Week following her efforts in two Eckerd wins. In the season opener against the University of West Alabama, Juday tallied five steals and five defensive rebounds as the Tritons held UWA to 46 points. The Tipton, Indiana native then recorded two steals and seven defensive rebounds in EC’s 63-52 win over Christian Brothers University. For the week, Juday amassed 22 points, 17 rebounds, seven steals, six assists while only turning the ball over twice. The weekly honor is the sixth of her career.
Men’s Swimmer of the Week
Samuel Brettmann / Nova Southeastern University / Fr. / San Antonio, Texas
Brettmann had his best performance this season with a pair of wins and season-bests, leading to a 135-127 win over the 43-time NJCAA National Champions, Indian River State College. The San Antonio, Texas native started with a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle with his first season-best time of 9:37.22. Brettmann then ended his day with a win in the 400-yard individual medley and his second season-best time, finishing nearly five seconds ahead of the runner-up at 4:04.45.
Women’s Swimmer of the Week
Jenna Johns / Nova Southeastern University / Fr. / Ambler, Pennsylvania
Johns led the way for the Nova Southeastern women's swimming team with four first-place finishes and three NCAA standard times in a 193-69 route over the 2017 NJCAA National Champions, Indian River State College. The Ambler, Pennsylvania native began as the third leg in the 200-yard medley relay that finished first with a time of 1:44.48, 0.21 seconds shy of the national standard. Johns then won the 100-yard backstroke with an NCAA B-Cut time, 56.47, two seconds ahead of the second place finisher. The freshmen then set a season-best in the 100 fly with another NCAA B-Cut time, 55.40. Just like the 100 yard back Johns finished two seconds ahead of the runner-up. The day ended with Johns as the anchor in the 200-yard freestyle relay that finished with a season-best and an NCAA A-Cut time of 1:34.72.
