Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week | October 23 - 29, 2017

Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of October 23 - 29, 2017. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions. 



Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week

8177Victoria Omoregie / Saint Leo University / So. / RS / Tampa, Florida
Omoregie led Saint Leo’s attack with 32 kills on the week on a .308 clip with just eight errors in 12 sets played. Omoregie tallied seven digs on the week where the Lions went 3-0 with a 3-1 win over the University of Tampa, a 3-2 upset over No. 3 Palm Beach Atlantic University, and a 3-0 sweep of Rollins College. The Tampa native tallied 11 kills on a .250 clip against Tampa, then posted 12 kills on a .265 hitting percentage against PBA. The Lions provided the Sailfish with its first loss of the season and the first at PBA since 2014. Saint Leo is now 16-5 overall and 10-3 in SSC play.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week

7986Jen Kruglova / Saint Leo University / So. / Libero / Moscow, Russia
Kruglova is named Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after finishing the week with 49 total digs (4.45/set) to help the Lions to a 3-0 week. The Russian was instrumental in SLU’s 3-1 win over the University of Tampa, a 3-2 upset over No. 3 Palm Beach Atlantic University, and a 3-0 sweep of Rollins College, where the Lions kept the three opposing teams to a combined .105 hitting percentage. Kruglova tallied 13 digs in the home match against Tampa with five assists. She turned around and scooped up 31 digs in the win over PBA, which handed the Sailfish its first loss of the season and was the first loss on their home court since 2014. It also marked the first win for the Lions over the Sailfish in program history. Kruglova finished the week with a 1.000 reception percentage going 31 for 31 with no errors in 11 sets played. Saint Leo is now 16-5 overall and 10-3 in SSC play.

Volleyball Setter of the Week

7984Anna Garrett / Saint Leo University / So. / Setter / Merritt Island, Florida
Garrett earns Setter of the Week for the third time this season following 10.42 assists per set across three Saint Leo wins. The sophomore tallied 15 kills and scooped up 26 digs while helping the Lions to a 3-1 win over the University of Tampa, 3-2 win over No. 3 Palm Beach Atlantic University, and a 3-0 sweep of Rollins College. Garrett recorded two double-doubles on the week with 40 assists/15 digs against Tampa and 59 assists/11 digs in the upset over PBA. The Merritt Island, Florida product finished the week with 125 assists on 324 attempts for a .386 percentage, a .368 hitting percentage, and eight total blocks. Saint Leo is now 16-5 overall and 10-3 in SSC play.

Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

8171Stefan Avram / Rollins College / Jr. / Forward / Orlando, Florida
Avram takes Offensive Player of the Week honors after helping Rollins secure home-field advantage in the SSC tournament quarterfinals. Avram scored twice against Florida Tech in the Tars final game of the season. The Orlando native tallied the game winner in the 64th minute off a rebound. Avram then provided insurance with a score in the 69th minute. The junior is now tied for first in the SSC with eight goals on the year. Rollins finishes the regular season at 9-4-1 overall, 6-4 in conference play.

Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

8173Stefan Faistenauer / Nova Southeastern University / So. / Defender / Tyrol, Austria
Faistenauer earns Defensive Player of the Week following Nova Southeastern’s upset No. 19 Lynn University. The sophomore’s defensive efforts helped the Sharks hold Lynn scoreless for only the second time this season. The Austrian also provided the game-winning goal on a header in the 84th minute to stun the Fighting Knights, 1-0. NSU's road victory at Lynn was the program's first since 1986 when the school was known as the College of Boca Raton. In Sunday's 3-2 victory over Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Faistenauer tallied the equalizer on another header, this time in the 88th minute, before NSU eventually came away with the 3-2 win. NSU's 8-7 record marked the first time since 2010 the school has finished with a winning record.

Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

8174Donish Henry-Cole / Lynn University / Jr. / Forward / Boca Raton, Florida.
Henry-Cole is named Offensive Player of the Week after racking up 13 points on five goals and three assists across three games. The junior forward opened the week with a two goal, one assist performance against Ave Maria University, before closing the week with the hat trick against Florida Southern College. The hat trick is the second of Henry-Cole’s career. With Lynn trailing by two goals with less than 20 minutes to play, Henry-Cole netted back-to-back scores in the 73rd and 81st minutes to send the game to overtime. The Boca Raton native also had two assists in the 5-5 draw, giving her a hand in all five goals and a total of eight points. Her 23 points on the season are the most for a Lynn individual since 2011. She leads the conference in both goals and points while ranking second in assists. Lynn finishes the season at 6-9-1 overall, 3-6-1 in conference play.

Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

8172Bailey Corbin / Nova Southeastern University / Sr. / Defender / Lampeter, Pennsylvania
Corbin helped guide the Sharks to their first-ever outright SSC regular season championship this past week. In Wednesday's 2-1 win over Lynn University, Corbin recorded the equalizer in the 11th minute off a header to spark the Sharks' offense. Three days later, the senior cashed in on another header, this time putting NSU in front prior to halftime, before eventually clinching the regular season title with a 2-0 win over the University Tampa. Her defensive efforts limited a Lynn side that entered off a 10-goal outburst to just one score. Additionally, the play of Corbin aided NSU in picking up its third shutout of the season with the win over the Spartans. The Sharks finish the regular season at 12-3-1 overall, 8-1-1 in league play.
 

Women’s Golfer of the Week

8176Tilda Larsson / Barry University / Jr. / Emmaboda, Sweden
Larsson is named Golfer of the Week after she finished tied for third at the Flagler Fall Slam. Larsson shot a one-under 143 (73-70) to finish Top-3 in a field of  98 athletes. She has now finished in the top-three for the third time this Fall. Her performance in the Flagler Fall Slam paced the team to another tournament victory, the team's second one of the fall. The weekly award is Larrson's seventh of her career, which is the most all-time for any SSC women's golfer.

Men’s Swimmer of the Week

8175Luis Jasso / Florida Southern College / Sr. / Monterrey, Mexico
Jasso won both breaststroke races in the Moccasins' first dual meet of the season, helping Florida Southern defeat Tampa 163-99. His first win came in the 100 with a time of 56.77 seconds, which gave him a 0.11-second victory over teammate Sean Kim and was almost four seconds faster than any Spartan swimmer. He later won the 200 in a time of 2:06.06, giving him a 6.77-second margin of victory in that race. He also finished fourth in the 100-butterfly in 53.48 seconds and was Florida Southern's #2 swimmer in that event.

Women’s Swimmer of the Week

8180Hana van Loock / University of Tampa / Fr. / Essen, Germany
van Loock led the University of Tampa women past nationally-ranked Florida Southern is first road meet of the season. The German part the 200 Medley Relay and 200 Free Relay which posted winning times of 1:47.55 and 1:37.00, respectively. van Loock also took two individual races, winning the 100 Back in 58.37 and the 100 Free in 52.63.
