DAY 4 RECAP: 2016 Sunshine State Conference Swim Championship

ORLANDO, Fla. – With the conclusion of Session Eight on Sunday, the 2016 Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championships have come to a close. At the end of the four day event the Moccasins of Florida Southern College take home both the men’s and women’s team championships.

FSC topped the men’s standings with 792.5 points, finishing ahead of Nova Southeastern with 743.5 points. Tampa garnered third with 722.5 points, while Florida Tech came in at 541 points for fourth. Saint Leo grabbed the fifth spot with 467.5 points and Rollins finished sixth with 191 points.

With the titles, Florida Southern has now won four consecutive men’s championships, while the women’s title is the school’s first.

The Moccasins garnered 893.5 points to take the top spot in the women’s standings, with NSU coming in second with 767 points. Tampa (598.5), Lynn (426) and Saint Leo (421) took spots three through five, respectively. Florida Tech earned 259 points to narrowly outpace Rollins, who scored 224 points, for sixth.

2016 Record Breaking Performances

Six meet records were broken during the 2016 SSC Championships, while two overall conference records fell, all on the men’s side. Pawel Trenda of Saint Leo set the 200 IM championships record with a 1:46.87, while Florida Southern’s Matthew Holmes took down the 400 IM meet record in 3:52.69. Nova Southeastern’s Thiago Sickert set two record times, breaking the overall SSC record in the 100 butterfly (47.14) and earning the meet record in the 200 butterfly (1:46.05). Tampa clipped the championships record in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:19.09, while Nova Southeastern captured the overall conference record in the 400 medley relay after finishing in 3:12.10.

Swimmers of the Meet

The Swimmer of the Meet for the men is Nova Southeastern’s Thiago Sickert, who accrued 77 points with three gold medals and a silver. On the women’s side, Rebecca Matthews of Lynn repeats as Swimmer of the Meet, with 80 points, having won four gold medals.
