MELBOURNE, Fla.– Barry University has been selected No. 1 in the 2015 Sunshine State Conference preseason women’s soccer coaches’ poll. The Buccaneers received 59 total votes and four first place votes in the poll. Barry has been crowned SSC regular season champions eight times, including the last two seasons.
Barry received a one-vote edge over Rollins College for first place. The Tars received 58 votes and four first place votes. Saint Leo University is third in the poll with 52 total votes and the final first place vote.
Barry (11-2-4, 7-0-1) suffered a season ending loss to Saint Leo (2-0) in the second round of the NCAA South Regional. Barry claimed their second consecutive Sunshine State Conference Regular Season Championship in 2014, the program's eighth overall.
Rollins (20-3, 7-1) completed their finest women's soccer season to date as National Runners-Up in 2014. The Tars won their second consecutive, third overall SSC Soccer Tournament and earned a bye into the South Regional. Rollins defeated Valdosta State (Ga.), 1-0, and then Columbus State (Ga.), 2-1, to gain access to the final four. In their first ever National Semifinal game, the Tars defeated Colorado School of Mines, 1-0. In the championship final, Rollins fell to back-to-back national champions, Grand Valley State, 3-0
Saint Leo (14-6, 6-2) finished third in conference play in 2014. The Lions reached the NCAA South Region Final last season. Saint Leo defeated North Alabama (1-0) and Barry (2-0) before a loss to No. 2 Rollins (1-0).
The 2015 Sunshine State Conference women’s soccer season opens up on September 3rd. Conference play begins on September 16th.
