2014 AVCA All-American and All-Region Awards

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) selects nine Sunshine State Conference athletes to receive All-American honors.  University of Tampa, Saint Leo University and Florida Southern were represented on 2014 AVCA All-American teams.

 

Tampa’s Berkley Whaley was named AVCA Division II First Team All-America for the second consecutive year. Whaley is only one of two (Cylie Seitz, Sonoma St.) to be recognized two years running. Whaley also repeated as the SSC Player of the Year and Daktronics South Region Player of the Year.

 

Jessica Wagner & Marissa Lisenbee of Tampa were also selected to the First Team. Lisenbee was selected Third Team All-American in 2013. Teammate Kahley Patrick was named Second Team All-American.

 

Florida Southern College has three named to AVCA All-American Teams. Ali Skayhan receives first team honors. Skayhan was selected to the second team in 2012. Kayshia Brady was named to the third team and Kate Stromberg was chosen as honorable mention.

 

Yaidimar Santiago and Alexa Griffith-Hardy of Saint Leo University earn All-American awards. Santiago, a third team pick, is the first player from Saint Leo to earn AVCA All-American accolades since 2009. Griffith-Hardy was a honorable mention selection.

Chris Catanach, University of Tampa, has been selected AVCA South Region Coach of the Year. Now in his 31st year at the helm of the Spartans, he boasts a career 966-166 record and UT is the current No. 1 team in the nation according to the latest AVCA Division II Coaches Top-25 Poll. They recently won their sixth consecutive regional championship. Tampa has dominated the Sunshine State Conference, completing the last three regular seasons without a loss spanning 54 matches. This marks Catanach's unprecedented 14th AVCA Region Coach of the Year honor, winning in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013 and 2014.

 

AVCA awards are voted on by registered members of the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
