2014 ALL-SSC Volleyball Awards
MELBOURNE, Fla. – Following University of Tampa’s 10th straight, 24th overall Sunshine State Conference championship, the Spartans earn a total of seven All-SSC awards. In all, 23 volleyball student-athletes are recognized as ALL-SSC. Voting for the team was conducted among the league’s volleyball coaches.
Berkley Whaley of Tampa repeats as Player of the Year after leading the Spartans to a 28-1 regular season. Whaley led the conference in Kills (381) and Kills per Set (4.14). She ended the season fourth in Hitting Percentage (.373). Whaley was selected SSC Offensive Player of the Week five times in 2014.
Tampa’s Chris Catanach is named SSC Coach of the Year for the 18th time, third consecutive. The Spartans have spent 10 consecutive weeks as the No. 1 ranked team in the country. The Spartans went undefeated in SSC play and will host the NCAA South Regional.
Newcomer and Freshman of the Year accolades belong to Shannon McDonough of Rollins College. McDonough was second in Kills (334) and tied for fourth in Kills per Set (3.06) this season in the SSC.
Berkley Whaley (Tampa) is the only player to repeat as an All-SSC First Team performer from 2013. Ali Skayhan (Florida Southern) was an All-SSC First Team from 2012. Marissa Lisenbee (Tampa) joins the 2014 First Team after being selected Second Team last season. Saint Leo’s Alexa Griffith-Hardy and Yadimar Santiago both were selected to the 2014 First Team after making the Newcomer Team one year ago.
