Lynn senior tennis player Christine Johnstone has been recognized as the 2009-10 Sunshine State Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Voting for the award was conducted among the league’s directors of athletics and faculty athletics representatives.  Criteria for selecting winners of the Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards include:  40 percent grade point average, 40 percent athletic prominence, and 20 percent service involvement within the school and community.

A senior from Southampton, Ontario, Johnstone carried a perfect 4.00 grade point average in biology.  She was a 2010 first team CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection.  She has been named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic honoree three times and has met the requirements to receive the distinction again in 2010.

Selected as the 2009-10 Lynn Blue and White Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Johnstone was also recognized as the NCAA Elite 88 award winner at the NCAA Division II Tennis Championship in Altamonte Springs, Fla.  In its inaugural year, the award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 88 championships.

Johnstone recently concluded her four-year career with a cumulative singles record of 32-10 and a 27-5 doubles mark.  A year ago, she went undefeated in both singles and doubles play.  In her four-year tenure, the Fighting Knights won three SSC championships and four NCAA regional titles.  The squad also made two appearances in the finals of the NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Championship.

Away from the courts and the classroom, Johnstone was a member of Lynn’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.  She helped coordinate more than 1,600 hours of community service provided by LU student-athletes in 2009-10.

Johnstone is the first Lynn student-athlete to be named SSC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.  Three Lynn athletes have previously been named Male Scholar-Athlete, as soccer players Lee Porter (2008-09) and Gareth Dunn (2000-01) and baseball standout Gabe MacDougall (2007-08) received the honor.
