Giblin, Kuni, Winskas, Charette, Johnston Receive Highest Honors

Eight SSC institutions were represented on the All-Sunshine State Conference Women’s Soccer team announced Tuesday by Commissioner Michael J. Marcil. Regular season and tournament champion Tampa led all schools with eight all-conference selections, including five first-team honorees.

Voting for the All-SSC women’s soccer team was conducted among the head coaches and sports information directors at each of the nine member institutions.

Saint Leo, which finished second in the final league rankings, placed six student-athletes on the all-conference squad, followed by Nova Southeastern, which had four selections. Three Rollins players received All-SSC honors, while Florida Southern, Florida Tech, and Lynn had two selections each. Barry placed one honoree on the team.

Tampa claimed four of the five individual award winners, with Bobby Johnston repeating as Coach of the Year, Malana Winskas repeating as Defensive Player of the Year, Shelby Kuni earning Offensive Player of the Year, and Jocelyn Charette garnering Freshman of the Year honors. Rollins’ Lindsay Giblin was chosen Player of the Year.

Joining the quartet of players of the year on the All-SSC First Team were: forward Shurell Burton (Nova Southeastern); midfielders Jennifer O’Connor (Saint Leo), Stephanie Quinones (Nova Southeastern), and Kara Rasmussen (Tampa); defenders Rocio Hernandez (Florida Tech) and Alison Tradd (Rollins); and goalkeeper Shannon Aitken (Tampa). Charette was named a first team at-large selection.

Named to the All-SSC Second Team were: forward Molly Anderson (Lynn), Hannah Beard (Saint Leo), and Samantha Robinson (Tampa); midfielders Courtney Evans (Tampa), Bridget Godwin (Saint Leo), and Maya Ozery (Barry); defenders Nicole Murphy (Tampa), Lizzie Seedhouse (Saint Leo), and Lindsay Taylor (Rollins); goalkeeper Lauren Hudson (Saint Leo); and at-large selection Sara Macko (Saint Leo).

Earning honorable mention All-SSC were: defenders Courtney O’Connell (Lynn) and Jenna Cleary (Florida Southern); forward Teresa Brantley (Florida Tech); and midfielders Lauren Huffman (Nova Southeastern), Halie Clark (Florida Southern), and Hayley Oligane (Nova Southeastern).

Giblin, a sophomore from Naples, Fla., was the only SSC player to rank in the top three in each major offensive statistical category. She ranks second in the league in points (39), goals (15), and assists (9). Giblin was named SSC Offensive Player of the Week twice during the regular season.

Kuni, a sophomore from Houston, Texas, led the league with 50 points and 23 goals. She stands just three goals shy of the SSC single-season record for goals scored. Kuni notched three hat tricks on the season and was a three-time SSC Offensive Player of the Week selection. Nationally, she ranks second in Division II in goals per game (1.31) and fifth in points per contest (2.88).

A senior from Champaign, Ill., Winskas wins Defensive Player of the Year honors for the fourth time in her career. She continues Tampa’s dominance of the league’s top defensive award, as only UT players have garnered the honor in each of the six years in which it has been presented. Winskas anchored a stingy Spartan defense that ranks second in the SSC in goals allowed (0.67), goals against average (0.64) and shutouts (9). Tampa also weighs in at 11th in NCAA Division II in goals against average and 16th in shutouts.

Charette, a product of Lakewood, Wash., made an immediate impact for the Spartans. She ties for second in the SSC with 15 goals and ranks third in both points (38) and assists (8). A key component of the UT offense, Charette tallied at least one goal and an assist in six of the Spartans’ matches this season.

Johnston repeats as Coach of the Year after leading his Tampa squad to the SSC regular season title for the second straight year. In his fifth year at the helm of the program, Johnston has guided his squad to a #8 national ranking. The Spartans are preparing to enter the NCAA tournament for the fourth consecutive year and will serve as the top seed and host for the forthcoming regional. To date, Tampa carries a 15-2-1 record and completed the SSC portion of its schedule with a 7-1 mark. The Spartans currently rank eighth in Division II in scoring offense and ninth in win percentage.
