MELBOURNE, Fla. - Florida Southern College guard Kevin Capers is named Sunshine State Conference Male Athlete of the Year.  Capers was instrumental in Florida Southern’s magical run to their second Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship in program history.  

 

Capers was chosen for the award in a vote conducted among Sunshine State Conference Athletic Directors, Senior Woman Administrators, Athletic Communication Directors, and Faculty Athletic Representatives from each of the nine member institutions.

 

Capers, a senior from Winter Haven, Florida, averaged 21.2 points per game and ended the 2014-15 season scoring in double figures in 24 straight games and 35 of 37 games this past season. Along with averaging 21.2 Points per Game, Capers also averaged 4.3 Rebounds, 3.8 Assists and 2.3 Steals per Game

 

With the play of Capers, Florida Southern went 8-1 against ranked opponent, 15-1 in league play, 36-1 overall, and won the Division II National Championship. Capers set Florida Southern single season records in Points (785) and Field Goals Attempted (548) this season while the Moccasins set a new Sunshine State Conference single-season record with 36 wins

 

After scoring 2,319 points in his four-year career, Capers sits second all-time in Florida Southern history. He finished as the school's all-time leader in free throws made (751) and is second in career Free Throw Attempts (1,005) and career Steals (261) as well as  fifth in career Assists (467). His 740 made Field Goals and his 1,581 career Field Goal Attempts are second most on the school's all-time list.

 

Capers was named BennettRank.com’s Division II Player of the Year. He also repeated as  Daktronics/CCAA South Region Player of the Year and SSC Player of the Year. Tournament committees named Capers the Most Outstanding Player at the SSC Tournament, the Division II South Region Tournament, and the Division II Elite Eight. Capers is the first Moccasin men’s basketball player to receive All-America recognition from five different organizations (D-II Bulletin, Daktronics, Basketball Times, National Association of Basketball Coaches, BennettRank.com).

 

With his selection as the 2014-15 SSC Male Athlete of the Year, Capers becomes the sixth-straight Florida Southern student-athlete to win the award and 16th overall. He joins Derek Flowers (1990-91), Kris Kearney (1988-89), and Jerry Johnson (1987-88) on the list of Mocassin men’s basketball players to win the award.
