Lynn baseball player Gabe MacDougall has been named the 2008 Sunshine State Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced Monday by Commissioner Michael J. Marcil.

Voting for the Scholar-Athletes of the Year was conducted among the league’s directors of athletics and faculty athletics representatives.  Criteria for selection include 40 percent grade point average, 40 percent athletic prominence, and 20 percent service involvement within the school and community.

A senior psychology major, MacDougall achieved a perfect 4.00 grade point average.  A native of Oak Run, Calif., he was named first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America and Academic All-District en route to earning recognition as NCAA Division II baseball Academic All-American of the Year.

MacDougall’s accomplishments on the diamond were as impressive as his academic honors, as he was selected first-team ABCA/Rawlings All-America, second-team Daktronics All-America, first-team ABCA/Rawlings and Daktronics All-Region, and first-team All-Sunshine State Conference.

The outfielder was among the SSC’s league leaders in nearly every offensive statistical category, including home runs (21), runs (65), slugging percentage (.829), and total bases (160).  Additionally, MacDougall ranked fifth with a .389 batting average, third with a .489 on-base percentage, third with 65 RBI, and second with 20 doubles.  Those impressive numbers also ranked among the DII leaders in a number of categories.

MacDougall has participated in a number of community and campus outreach projects though Lynn’s CHAMPS/Life Skills program.

He is the second Lynn student-athlete to earn Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, joining men’s soccer player Gareth Dunn, who earned the distinction in 2000-01.
