FSC’s Karlyn Scott Named SSC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Florida Southern senior softball player Karlyn Scott has been selected as the 2011-12 Sunshine State Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
A senior Biology major, Scott achieved a perfect 4.00 GPA. She was the only SSC player named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division II Softball team, earning first-team recognition. She was also named the Florida Southern Scholar-Athlete for softball for the third consecutive year.
A native of Crawfordville, Fla., Scott has met the criteria to appear on the forthcoming 2012 SSC Commissioner’s Spring Honor Roll, as well as the NFCA Scholar-Athlete list. She has achieved those distinctions each of her four years at FSC.
Scott also shined on the softball diamond in 2012, leading the Moccasins to a 39-18 record and a berth in the NCAA DII South Super Regional versus eventual national champion Valdosta State. An All-SSC first-team selection, Scott batted .358 with 44 runs and 20 RBI. She ranked second in the SSC in stolen bases, third in hits (67) and runs, and sixth in batting average. She was a perfect 29-for-29 in stolen bases this spring and completed her career a flawless 43-for-43 on the base paths.
A member of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society, Scott was very active in the Lakeland community in her spare time. She volunteered at the Florida Baptist Children’s Home, VISTE (Volunteers in Service to Elderly), Lighthouse Ministries, Campfire USA, and Volunteers of America. She also participated in the local Komen Race for the Cure in support of breast cancer awareness.
Voting for the SSC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year was conducted among the league’s athletic directors, senior woman administrators, sports information directors, and faculty athletics representatives. Criteria considered in selecting recipients include 40 percent grade point average, 40 percent athletic prominence, and 20 percent school and community involvement.
Scott is the third Florida Southern student-athlete to be named SSC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The other winners were also softball players, with Megan Brown earning the honor in 2006-07, and Katie Wolfe being recognized in 2001-02.
