Lynn’s Lee Porter Named SSC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Lynn University senior soccer player Lee Porter has been named the 2009 Sunshine State Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, announced Tuesday by Commissioner Michael J. Marcil.
The award was determined by votes cast by league athletic directors and faculty athletics representatives. Criteria for selection were 40 percent grade point average, 40 percent athletic prominence, and 20 percent service involvement within the school and community.
A native of Repton, England, Porter graduated with a 3.82 grade point average as a psychology major. Despite being immersed in soccer, he still managed to post a perfect 4.00 GPA last fall. He graduated Summa Laude from Lynn.
Porter’s classroom performance did not go unnoticed on the national level. He was selected ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-America and First Team Academic All-District. He was also a member of the SSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the Fall 2008 semester.
On the field, Porter’s accomplishments were equally impressive. Concluding his career as the most decorated student-athlete in school history, he amassed 19 conference, region, and national honors in his four years in Boca Raton. Despite playing as a defender, he ranks among the Lynn career leaders in points (86), goals (33), and game winning goals (14). This season, he was tabbed All-SSC First Team, Daktronics and NSCAA All-South Region First Team, Daktronics First Team All-America, and NSCAA Second Team All-America.
When he was away from the pitch and classroom, Porter volunteered for soccer camps and clinics at Hammock Point Elementary School.
Porter is the third Lynn student-athlete to garner Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year recognition and the second in a row. Baseball standout Gabe MacDougall won the award in 2007-08, while soccer player Gareth Dunn received the award in 2000-01.
