Southern’s Stauch Named 2009-10 Male Athlete of the Year
Florida Southern senior golfer Matt Stauch has been selected 2009-10 Sunshine State Conference Male Athlete of the Year.
Voting for the award was conducted among the league’s sports information directors.
A native of Dublin, Ohio, Stauch lead the Moccasins to the 12th NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship in school history. He also helped propel his squad to its 16th Sunshine State Conference title. He was recognized as the SSC Golfer of the Year and was selected first team All-American by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Playing the final hole of his collegiate golf career, Stauch sank a birdie putt to finish third in the individual standings at the DII Championship in Noblesville, Ind. He completed the four-round event with a score of 293 and was the Mocs’ top finisher.
Stauch recorded seven top-10 finishes in 11 tournaments this season. He won medalist honors at the USF Invitational, turning in a career-best score of 65 in the second round of the event. He also claimed first place at the Queens Invitational and tied for first at the end of regulation at the Southeastern Collegiate before falling in a playoff.
Stauch completed the season with a 71.58 stroke average, which ranks third in the storied history of the program. He posted 11 rounds with a score of 70 or below.
In addition to starring on the course, Stauch was also a standout in the classroom. He was FSC’s 2010 Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a four-time member of the SSC Commissioner’s Spring Honor Roll. He graduated May 1 with a 3.38 grade point average in sports management.
Stauch is the 11th Florida Southern student-athlete to be recognized as SSC Male Athlete of the Year. He joins fellow Moccasin golfers Steve Sokol (2000-01), Jeff Klauk (1999-00), and John Curley (1995-96) who previously claimed the distinction.
