SSC Dominates PING First-Team All-Americans; Svensson Named Top Freshman
The Sunshine State Conference dominated the 2013 Division II PING First-Team All-American squad, which was announced following Wednesday’s final round of stroke play at the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship in Hershey, Pa.
SSC golfers took seven of the eight spots on the squad. Additionally, Barry’s Adam Svensson was given the Phil Mickelson Award, which recognizes the most outstanding freshman in NCAA DII men’s golf.
Svensson had seven top-10 finishes in his eight tournament appearances, including runner-ups at the Southeastern Collegiate and Bobcat Invitational. He was named the Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year and a First-Team All-SSC.
He was joined on the First-Team All-American squad by fellow Buccaneer Scott Smyers, Nova Southeastern’s Ricardo Celia and Ben Taylor, Florida Southern’s Tim Crouch and Case Gard, and Lynn’s Daniel Young.
The lone non-SSC First-Team All-American was Abilene Christian’s Alex Carpenter.
Following Wednesday’s round, all four SSC teams – Florida Southern, Barry, Nova Southeastern, and Lynn – qualified for the match play quarterfinals by occupying the top four spots on the team leaderboard following stroke play.
