ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Florida Southern senior guard Dylan Travis picked another award on Tuesday afternoon as the Omaha, Neb., native was recognized as the first U.S. Basketball Writers Association National Division II Player of the Week for the 2015-16 season after his outstanding play for a reigning National Champion Moccasins in their two Sunshine State Conference wins last week.
Travis' USBWA National Player of the Week honor comes on the heels of him winning his first career SSC Offensive Player of the Week honor on Monday.
The USBWA National Player of the Week is voted on a panel of Sports Information Directors from each of the eight NCAA Division II regions. The nominees for the National Player of the Week Award must've been selected by their respective league as its Player of the Week. The winner is announced on Tuesday following the release of the NABC/Division II Coaches' Top 25 Poll.
It is the second time the USBWA has honored a Moccasin player as its Division II National Player of the Week as former Moccasin guard and current assistant coach Tyler Kelly was honored last season on Dec. 16 following his performances in FSC's wins over Southern Indiana and Bellarmine at the Bellarmine Classic in Louisville, Ky.
Travis earns the Division II National Player of the Week award after averaging 26.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game and shooting 46.2 percent from the field and 75 percent (15-for-20) at the free throw line to lead the Mocs to wins over Barry and Lynn to improve to 2-2 overall and open SSC play with a 2-0 record. The two wins over Barry and Lynn helped the Mocs extend its SSC win streak to 17 consecutive games dating to last season.
The 6-foot-3 guard began the week by scoring 25 points and pulling down 10 rebounds for his first career double-double in FSC's 74-72 win over 24th-ranked Barry last Wednesday and then scored 28 points and collecting a career high 11 rebounds in the Mocs 98-91 road win over Lynn this past Saturday. The 28 points and 11 rebounds gave Travis his second consecutive double-double and also a new career high in rebounds. Additionally, Travis dished out 12 assists, had six steals and blocked one shot for the week.
On the season, Travis leads the Mocs and the SSC scoring as he is averaging 26.3 points per game and has scored 20 or more points in all four games, including tallying a career high 30 points in FSC's 77-63 loss to Delta State at the SSC/GSC Challenge on Nov. 14 in Livingston, Ala. Along with averaging 26.3 points per game, the 6-foot-3 guard is also averaging 8.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2.5 steals per game and is shooting 47.9 percent from the field, 33 percent from the 3-point line and 75.7 percent from the free throw line.
The USBWA is recognizing Division II Players of the Week for the second consecutive year this season.
