With just one day remaining on the schedule, Nova Southeastern built its lead to 124 points after Saturday’s third day of competition at the Sunshine State Conference Men’s Swimming Championship. The event is being contested at the Central Florida YMCA Aquatic Center in Orlando.
The Sharks have amassed 662.5 points through three days, adding to their distance over second-place Florida Southern, which has 538.5 points. Tampa sits in third place with 504.5 points, while Saint Leo occupies the fourth spot with 288. Rollins ranks fifth with 281.5 points.
NSU won two championship finals on Saturday to add to its point total. Jonas Grundstrom claimed first place in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 3:58.91. Jorge Ospina notched a victory in the 100-yard butterfly with a mark of 49.29.
Florida Southern picked up three wins on the evening. The Moccasins began the finals by taking the only relay event of the day. Jeb Halfacre, Miguel Ferreira, Bruce Janzen, and Alex Peterson combined for an NCAA Division II “A” standard time of 1:30.01 in the 200-yard medley relay.
Halfacre and Ferreira also chalked an individual win apiece. Halfacre took the 100-yard backstroke in 49.24, while Ferreira posted a DII “A” standard mark of 54.68 in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Tampa recorded the other championship final win, as Jeffrey Fiore took gold in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:39.53.
The inaugural SSC Championship will come to a close on Sunday, with the first ever conference champion being crowned. Preliminaries will begin at 10 a.m., with the finals hitting the water at 5 p.m. A complete schedule and full results are available on the “Swimming Championship Central” page on the SSC website.
