The ITA South Region Championship, hosted this weekend in Lakeland, concluded with an SSC sweep in every event. Florida Tech’s Kristina Huba won the women’s singles title, while Lynn’s Willi Wolfer took home the men’s championship. In doubles action, the Lynn duo of Ioana Ivan and Valentina Confalonieri claimed the women’s championship, while Barry’s Marco Mokrzycki and Fabian Groetsch won the men’s event.
Huba won the women’s singles title with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Barry’s Olivia Matuszak. The first break point came in the seventh game of the first set with the players even at 3-3. Huba broke Matuszak’s serve to take a 4-3 lead in set one. Huba went on to break her opponent’s serve once more to earn a 6-4 first-set victory. In the second set, Huba put the match in cruise control, breaking Matuszak’s serve all three times, to take the set 6-0 and win the singles championship, 6-4, 6-0.
Wolfer earned the men’s singles title with a 3-6, 6-3 1-0 victory over West Florida’s Bruno Savi. After dropping the opening set 3-6, Wolfer regained his form and dominated the UWF player 6-3 to even the match up. The senior then won a grueling first game in the third set before Savi had to retire due to injury.
In the women’s doubles championship match, Ivan and Confalonieri defeated Andrea Berkova and Kim Przeslowski in an all Lynn final. Playing a best two-out-of-three, Confalonieri/Ioana had little problems with Berkova/Przeslowski, knocking off their Blue & White teammates in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.
Seeded fourth, Groetsch and Mokrzycki won the men’s doubles title Sunday, beating West Florida's third-seeded Kevin Ducros and Tony Rajaobelina, 6-2, 6-2 in the final. Mokrzycki and Groetsch went 4-0 over the three-day event to win the pairs championship. Groetsch's serve was never broken during the championship match.
All of this weekend’s regional winners will compete at the ITA Small College Nationals in Mobile, Ala. The nationals begin on Oct. 11 and run through Oct. 14.
