2012 All-SSC Women's Tennis Team Announced

Nineteen student-athletes have been named to the 2012 All-Sunshine State Conference Women’s Tennis Team.  Lynn’s Ioana Ivan was selected Player of the Year, while teammate Sabine Krause was tabbed Freshman of the Year.  Barry’s Avi Kigel was chosen Coach of the Year.

Joining Ivan as All-SSC First Team singles selections were:  Linda Fritschken (Barry), Kristina Huba (Florida Tech), Alexandra Johansson (Nova Southeastern), Laura Kemkes (Saint Leo), and Magda Riutort (Florida Southern). 

Recognized as first-team selections in doubles were:  Katarina Huba and Kristina Huba (Florida Tech), Ivan and Krause (Lynn), and Kemkes and Emily Singleton (Saint Leo).

Accompanying Krause and Singleton on the all-conference second team for singles were:  Maria Benkirane (Saint Leo), Andrea Berkova (Lynn), Katarina Huba (Florida Tech), and Ashley Rosenberg (Rollins).

Garnering All-SSC Second Team in doubles were:  Mona Mansour and Cristina Valladares (Barry), Riutort and Sabine Goge (Florida Southern), and Julie Stas and Olivia Matuszak (Barry).

The Saint Leo tandem of Adrianna Daszkiewicz and Jeanette McDonald received honorable mention for their doubles play.

Voting for the All-SSC Women’s Tennis Team was conducted among the league’s women’s tennis coaches and sports information directors.

A sophomore from Snagov, Romania, Ivan amassed a 20-1 singles record playing exclusively in the top flight.  She defeated 10 opponents who appeared in the ITA’s national rankings and is currently ranked No. 3 in the ITA’s Division II singles rankings.  Ivan is also slated No. 3 in the DII doubles rankings with partner Sabine Krause.  Playing in the #1 doubles slot, the duo has collected a 19-3 record, including a perfect 8-0 mark in conference action.  The tandem knocked off nine nationally-ranked opponents this spring.

In her debut season from Kamp Lintfort, Germany, Krause tallied a 15-5 singles record playing in the #2 and #3 flights.  Among her victories was six wins over nationally-ranked players.  Krause is presently ranked No. 40 in the ITA’s Division II singles rankings.

Kigel wins his third straight SSC Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year award after lead his Barry squad to its third consecutive conference title.  The Buccaneers sport a perfect 22-0 record and cruised through SSC play with an unblemished 8-0 mark.  Kigel’s Bucs are currently the No. 2-ranked team in NCAA Division II.  They have defeated 13 opponents who appeared in the ITA national rankings.   With the NCAA tournament preparing to get underway, Barry has been tabbed as the top seed in the South Region and will serve as one of two hosts for regional action this weekend.
