Two student-athletes, Rollins’ Sebastian Hafner and Lynn’s Alex Voirin, received honorable mention for their singles performance.
A sophomore from Troisdorf, Germany, Wolfer wins Player of the Year distinction after being recognized as the SSC Freshman of the Year in 2010. He posted a 16-1 record at #1 singles, including a 6-1 mark in SSC play. Nine of his victories came against opponents who were nationally-ranked in singles. In back-to-back matches, he knocked off two top-five foes. Wolfer defeated No. 5 Jeff Morris from Rollins 6-2, 6-1 on March 26. He then downed No. 4 Mikk Irdoja 6-3, 7-5 on April 9. Wolfer also combined with Luca Pavanelli for an impressive 18-1 record at #2 doubles. The duo rolled to a perfect 7-0 mark in conference play.
Lozier played a key role in Saint Leo’s most successful season since 1988. A native of Saint Ouen Laumone, France, he compiled an 18-4 record, playing primarily in the #2 singles position. He posted a solid 6-2 mark in SSC competition. Lozier also notched a 16-8 doubles record with Matt Nicholson-Lewis. Competing in the top doubles flight, the duo posted a pair of wins over nationally-ranked teams. The tandem took down No. 36 Ben and Zach Newell from Rockhurst by an 8-6 tally. They also defeated No. 20 Ben Maxwell and Hisa Sato of Eckerd 8-5.
By sharing SSC Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year honors, Samuel and Perez have now claimed the last seven awards. Samuel earned the distinction in 2005 and then received the honor three straight years from 2008-2010. Perez garnered the recognition in 2006 and 2007.
Perez led his Fighting Knights to a 17-4 overall record and a 5-1 mark in SSC play. The squad avenged its lone regular-season conference loss by downing Barry 5-0 in the SSC Championship final. Currently ranked No. 5 in the ITA Division II national rankings, the Knights were awarded the No. 2 seed in the upcoming DII South Regional and will serve as a host site for the first two rounds of play.
Samuel guided his defending national champion Buccaneers to a 17-7 overall record and a perfect 6-0 slate in SSC regular-season play. Ranked No. 4 in the latest national poll, the Bucs will enter the NCAA tournament as a No. 3 seed. With his latest honor, Samuel has now won SSC Men’s Tennis Coach of the year distinction 11 times.
Voting for the All-SSC men’s tennis team was conducted among the league’s tennis coaches and sports information directors.
