Nova Southeastern's Nikko Echevarria and Barry's Corey Witkowski have been selected Sunshine State Conference Baseball Players of the Week for the period ending April 17.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK -- Nova Southeastern junior OF Nikko Echevarria (Abqaib, Saudi Arabia) batted .533 with five runs and 12 RBI to lead the Sharks to a 3-1 weekly record on the road, including an SSC sweep at Saint Leo. Echevarria hit safely in each game and tallied multiple hits in two. He notched two home runs, a triple, and a double while recording a 1.133 slugging percentage. He was particularly lethal in NSU’s 20-4 win in game two of the series at SLU. Echevarria went 4-for-6 with nine RBI. He clubbed a grand slam in the seventh inning, and then collected a three-run homer in the very next inning. For the week, he posted a .579 OBP and a 1.000 fielding percentage. He was 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK -- Barry junior Corey Witkowski (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) permitted one earned run on seven hits and a walk in the No. 11 Buccaneers’ 10-1 win over No. 8 Tampa. Working eight innings, he struck out one. Witkowski limited the Spartans, who came into the contest leading the league with a .354 team batting average, nearly 100 points below their typical offensive output. He now sports a 1.20 ERA in conference play.
