2010-11 All-SSC Men's Basketball Team Announced
Fifteen student-athletes have been named to the 2010-11 All-Sunshine State Conference Men’s Basketball Team. Rollins’ Nick Wolf was selected Player of the Year, while his coach, Tom Klusman, was tabbed Coach of the Year. Barry’s Willie Whitfield was recognized as the Defensive Player of the Year, and Saint Leo’s Nate Johnson was the Freshman of the Year.
Joining Wolf and Whitfield on the All-SSC first team were: Rashad Callaway (Tampa), Rion Rayfield (Florida Southern), and Justin Sedlak (Florida Tech).
Earning All-SSC second team recognition were: Anthony Griffis (Tampa), Alex Gynes (Nova Southeastern), Chris Hall (Lynn), Brandon Jenkins (Florida Southern), and Matt Robertson (Rollins).
Two players, John Harper (Eckerd) and Terry Jenkins (Florida Southern), also earned honorable mention.
Receiving All-Freshman recognition with Johnson were: Stefon Barfield (Tampa), Alex Bodney (Eckerd), Derrick Bolanos (Barry), and Trip McFall (Rollins).
A senior from Cincinnati, Ohio, Wolf earns SSC Player of the Year distinction for the second time in his career. He also garnered the award as a sophomore in 2009. Wolf led the SSC with 20.6 points per game and ranked second with 10.1 rebounds per contest. He ranked sixth in the league with a .541 field goal percentage and seventh with 2.9 assists per outing. Wolf posted a double-double in 19 games this season.
Whitfield was named Defensive Player of the Year after leading the conference in rebounding and ranking second in blocked shots. A senior from Miami, Whitfield hauled in 10.6 rebounds per game. He recorded 1.9 blocks per contest. Whitfield also played a key offensive role for the Buccaneers, leading the squad with 15.3 points per outing.
In his debut season at Saint Leo, Johnson contributed 3.9 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. A native of Chicago, he made his way into the starting line-up on eight occasions. Johnson’s best outing of the season came in the Lions’ game against Nova Southeastern on Feb. 5, as he tallied a season-best 11 points and five rebounds.
Klusman receives Coach of the Year accolades for the sixth time in his career. Klusman led the Tars to their eighth SSC title and their second straight, as they shared the league crown with Florida Southern a year ago. Rollins leads the SSC in a number of statistical categories, including scoring defense (68.2 ppg), scoring margin (+9.7), field goal percentage (.494), and steals (8.7 spg). The Tars are currently ranked No. 21 in the NABC Division II coaches poll.
Voting for the All-SSC team was conducted among the league’s men’s basketball coaches and sports information directors.
